    I tried several times to make knives like this, with a cheap 350w amazon belt grinder, but I NEVER managed to do the bevel right. How do you do that ?! For example, when you approach the knife from the belt in order to grind a bit more metal, right when the knife makes contact with the belt, but is not yet exactly parallel to it because no pressure is applied yet, how do you make sure that you approach with the perfect angle so that it will not ruin what you have ground so far by grinding with a different angle ? Thanks.

      @MackOneHandMade Год назад

      Hi friend, how are you? I'll try to answer here and any other questions just say. As for the sander and the power of the motor, this is really a very important point for a good result in terms of sanding. I use a 2 hp motor (1500 watts) but I could use one of up to 3 hp. The issue is that ceramic belt sandpaper, like the ones I use, have to reach a certain speed for it to reach its ideal grinding capacity. So a 350 W motor will hardly be able to grind steel satisfactorily. My sander is pretty simple. My sander is pretty simple. At the time I paid about 150 dollars. The engine was overhauled.

    • @MackOneHandMade
      @MackOneHandMade Год назад

      As for the roughing angle, there are 3 ways that I know of. The first, the free hand, is a skill that comes with real practice. Unfortunately there is no shortcut. It took me about 4 years to make a partial flat blade with sharp and beautiful corners. Some tips can help, of course. For example, moving your body instead of your arms while working will give you more firmness and uniformity when grinding. Always leave room for error. If you are going to make a 1.5 cm bevel, file down to 1 cm. So as you go up the grain of sandpaper (36, 80, 120, 220 etc) you will be able to make small adjustments without running the risk of ruining the work.

    • @MackOneHandMade
      @MackOneHandMade Год назад

      The second way is to use a jig. So you define the angle previously and adjust it in the jig. The third is the one I still use on straight partial flat blade projects. It is about using the angulation capacity of the flat sander table or even the backrest of the sander. I have a video ready explaining how I calculate the angle and size of the bevel and how I adjust the sander. I'll post it Tuesday on my other channel. Then I'll pass you here in the comments the link to the video.

    Another stock removal vid. You have a forge, I saw it. Use it for the next knife. You will respect yourself in the morning by not getting lost in the vast universe of stock removal vids. Tanto, wakizashi, katana all assemble the same way. I would call what you made "your version of a tanto" but a tanto it is not. Still a cool looking knife. Forge On!!!

      It's always our version of a Japanese blade, man. Unless it is made in the traditional eastern way it will always be a westernized version. Especially with that angled tip. As for forging, I work to order. Some blades are forged, others are made by grinding. Check out the channel that has a lot of forged blades. Thanks for the comment 🤝

      En realidad, en la espiga hago muescas pequeñas o grandes para crear un buen anclaje entre la espiga y la madera. Como la resina epoxi soporta, de media, unas 2 toneladas de presión, para un cuchillo de caza es suficiente. Si fuera un cuchillo de campo para recibir un golpe, entonces realmente sería necesario un alfiler en el mango. Muchas gracias por el comentario.
