I've been feeling a bit low lately, so I decided to create a cheerful song! :) I made it using the Dirtywave M8 Headless and only used synthesizers, except for the intro.

M8 headless running on Steam Deck is pretty awesome! First of go to github.com/Dirtywave/M8HeadlessFirmware and read the setup guide to install m8 headless on the Teensy 4.1 Update! Follow the instructions from my github repository github.com/roterodamus/steamdeck-m8c Easier than previous method. Mostly just copy and paste commands. Trash80 thank you so much! what you have created with the Dirt...

Electronic music. Made with Elektron Octatrack, Analog 4, Waldorf Blofeld, and a dying tape recorder.
Any chance you could do a tutorial on how you made the image/custom fw? I have a RG353v, and I can’t get it to work. I finally have up to date M8C on ArkOS, but I’m not getting audio. There’s no way I can see to manage audio I/O. The image you shared doesn’t seem to be compatible with my device, either.
HI Again, thanks for your image - I was almost able to get it running on a K36 device (kind of r36 clone which is locked to a specific kernel) it was a pain in the arse and have spent way too many days on it :D I got it running but the sound wasn't working unfortunately - I was wondering how you configured the audio, I found the jack script in home folder, but I couldn't get it to connect to jack server - not sure if it's using pulseaudio or just alsa - any tips? thanks!
I'm impressed that you managed to get it started at all! Have you checked if your device can play any sound? If not, the main issue might be related to the drivers. For instance, there are various drivers for the different types of LCD screens for the R36s, and it can be quite complicated. I believe audio is handled through ALSA, because I used the internal settings from M8C to set it up.
@@roterodamus haha thanks, I've been playing with it for weeks to be honest - I've tried various things - last night I got it running with sound but it was very crackly, so I changed the config a bit and sound was gone completely never to return :D currently I have a modified version of arkos which runs on k36 models, with your i3 config and m8c version - I had to recompile libserialport and remove the default installation - current issue is that m8c always loads ontop of i3, I guess it's for some reason not loading like it did in your distro - within the current space and resizeable.
@@roterodamus do you have any steps, for how you installed/configured i3 and xorg? this could really help to ensure I get the same setup as you - I was trying to copy/paste parts of the file system and checking config files etc but maybe I've missed something silly.
Great video! I've recently done this and am loving m8 so far. My only real issue is that i have pretty severe hissing when plugging in (decent) headphones. Did you find the same, or is that issue unique to me?
My r36s has a finicky headphone jack. The plug from my headphones is too short, which causes poor sound quality and keeps the speaker on. On the other hand, the plug from my in-ear monitors is too long, leading to a hissing noise and strange echoing. If your plug is too long, trying to pull it out of the device just a little bit might solve the problem. If it’s too short, an adapter like I have linked in the description might fix it.
@roterodamus Thanks for the suggestions! I've just tried with some cheap old headphones and there's far less hiss, so I think you're probably right.
Hi thanks A LOT. I’m using this image and having a lot of fun. One question, how can I get a WiFi driver added to it? I’m not sure if the image has enough stuff installed to build one from source
Thank you so much! Would it be possible that you create a guide on how to update the m8c version on arkm8c?
holy crap ! ver nice work , i may finaly try the M8
can you see the potential of having dual boot on this device or similar devices to switch between games and M8 headless? Do you think this is the best model for M8 headless? I'm trying to get one for Christmas.
I see how a dual boot setup could be useful, but I don't think I can handle the maintenance since it seems pretty complicated. The r36s has two SD card slots, so when I want to play games, I can just switch the cards. Mostly, though, I'm focused on making music! I'm not sure if the r36s the best option out there, but it's affordable and works well for M8 Headless.
Awesome ❤ I did it, thanks a lot. But as usual, I want more - the original DW screen is touch-sensitive, could it be transferred to a joystick in the console?
Yes, someone created a version just like what you mentioned using a tool called aseqjoy. However, the joysticks have springs that push them back to their original position when you let go. I didn’t think it would be very useful to work that way.
I’m using this with a Maudio mini pro, bad keyboard but I can use the knobs to do the do effects etc, it’s fun. You need to connect the midi to m8c by using aconnect first and then hold the B button on an instrument parameter while turning the knob you want to use to map it.
Just discovered this through your m8 headless with r36s video. Amazing vibes man you made my night!
Thanks! Means a lot.
Thanks so much! Up and running in no time
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is great, love the bass note on this
nicee very vibey :]
tutorial please
this is some fire stuff. some of the best demonstration of hip hop on m8.
Done and done! Thank you man! I've found that using L1 or R1 seems to crash the system, have you seen that? I may be wrong as the mouse pointer still functions but the screen is blank other than that
last one damn good
I wonder: can you run version 4 of the headless on that? Cause I have on complaints on my device (another Anbernic) apart from that.
From what I can tell from the m8c releases page, m8 firmware 3.1.0 is the most recently supported version which was added in m8c v1.5.1
I’m using v4 with it and it’s fine
Sounds good.
Is it possible to have the Teensy inside the unit so that you don't have to use a cable and expose the Teensy?
Hey everyone! I just got a R36S, installed everything with success and M8 tracker is now running. Excellent guide! However, after M8 tracker runs, no button from the gamepad is working and I don't know how to edit the config file exactly; how to edit the key bindings? How do the numbers work exactly? Thank you in advance!
I tried it on rgv351v it starts butis unresponsive. What firmware are playing on m8? Is anyone running the latest firmware 4.0?

@@ugofosco8377were you ever able to get this working?
Did you ever get this working?
It starts but is unusable, i tried many firmwares with no luck.
I got a r36s and pretty much worked perfect! I had to transfer some files from the OG sd card but once I did that, seems to work well. Mind me asking why you removed support for analog sticks in M8C? I think it would be cool to use them live, was there some issue? Thanks for the hard work!
How’s battery life?

@@roterodamusdang it there’s always a deal breaker
So I burnt the Arkm8c.tar.xz 1.5 software to a 32 GB SD card using Ether, stuck the SD card into the TF OS slot, turned it on and now it's just hanging on a black screen for about a half hour.
Is there any way to adapt this image for the R33s that doesn't have analog sticks? The image works, but it can't be controlled because it doesn't have a function key and analog sticks.
I have disabled the analog sticks in the latest update. It seems that the R33S may utilize a different controller configuration, and I am unsure if it is recognized in the kernel. Unfortunately, I do not have an R33S to verify this. If possible, you might want to try using an older version.
@@roterodamus If you want, I can try to program a version for r33s, but I would need your experience to do it. Are you active on the Dirtywave Discord? To find an alternative way to communicate other than RUclips. Thank you for your response.
@@djStrombo Yes, I'm on Discord. You can find me using the same name, roterodamus.
@@roterodamus ok, I sent you a friend request
Did you ever get this figured out on the r33s?
got it workin after few trials and errors (last one was not being able to control it in steam os mode, so i meeded to choose keyboard + mouse controls and re-map x/a/b/y)
Hey, I'm running into the same issue, could you tell me with a bit of detail how you chose the m+kb controls and did the mapping?
@@ignitiondj4025there is a gamepad icon before starting m8c top right steam. choose keyboard and mouse then bind keyboard keys A S Z X
also you can access in game with button top right of d pad > controller settings > controller settings
Can this be installed on RG353V or RG353VS?
Ping :)
Looks really nice, just a question is this image also compatible whit other similar consoles like the Anbernic RG353V/VS?
I don’t think that it would work, but I only have a r36s so I can’t test it. Maybe if you copy all the .dtb files and config file from the /boot partition that came with your device and copy them to the /boot partition of arkm8c overwriting any files if prompted.
Great job with this project, bought an r36s just for this ❤ One question, is there any way to adjust the brightness of the screen?
R3 + dpad Up or Down
heyy i have anther question, turns out i messed with the analog sticks connection to the motherboard and now i get a drift whenever i turn the machine on, even after physically unplugging them so im wondering if there is a way to force the system to load without recognising the analog sticks? i only need them to setup the audio and a solution i found for that is to just plug a mouse
Maybe check the configs in the boot/m8c-settings. You’ll might be able to disable analog input in the m8c-config or disable antimicrox in the i3-config
@@roterodamus how do i access these files? when i mount the sd boot partition only shows me some files such as boot.ini some linux dtb files and a file without extension named uInitrd (im on windows)
@@hectorllanquin assuming you have the latest version, there should be a folder called arkm8c-settings in the boot partition
@@roterodamus updated to the latest version but i cant find documentation about these config files to check if there is an option to disable analog stick and changing the threshold didn't help either. Disabling antimicrox leaves me without controls at all. Any clues?
@@hectorllanquinSdl dead zone is kind of weird the max number is 32767 or 32768. But I think the only way to completely disable the analog sticks is to change the definition of the controller in gamecontrollerdb.txt. To find its location you need to ssh -Y into the r36s or connect a keyboard and run m8c from the terminal. It should tell you the location of gamecontrollerdb.txt and which controller. I haven’t tried any of this but it’s my best guess.
You're a legend! This is awesome, thanks so much for sharing your work. 👍
My latency is pretty bad. Is that normal ? Something in the region of 40-60 ms.
Put your device to sleep by pressing the power button, then wake it up. Wait for a couple seconds for m8c to respond. Latency should be fixed.
Fantastic work, many thanks, I've built a custom one piece, no glue, no screw, no 3d print case to hold the teensy in a grip so it's out of the way and easy to hold. But nevermind all that. Instead I have a question: do you have a github page or any other way of keeping an eye out for new updates?
I’ll look into it!
Interested in this teensy case, have you shared it anywhere?
do you think it works on the rg35xx plus as well ? it does not have the analog sticks
does it have audio input as well to sample stuff ?
Also looking for info about that. For now I can't make anything to work for input audio (r36s and pc version)
Got an issue : Missing Dependencies - Error : Pacman failed to install missing dependencies. Missing dependcies - Pacman>6.1 Checking builtime dependencies... Could not resolve all dependencies... I don't really know what to do, I tried going back to the beginning but it doesn't seem to help

If you are still dealing with this issue try this 1: cd yay 2: git checkout 96f90180a3cf72673b1769c23e2c74edb0293a9f 3: makepkg -si
run this command before $ makepkg -si: $ git checkout 96f90180a3cf72673b1769c23e2c74edb0293a9f it will set yay to a bit older version but will work
Is it runs on rgb30?
Thank you
well done mate
hey roterodamus thanks great work i already have m8 headless working on my rg351v its ok but a little laggy , and i have a spare sd so i would love to see if your dedicated setup would have better performance, do you know if anyone has had any success with running your version on the rg351v, although the r36s is similar the rg351v theres a few differences like no right joystick, anyway if anyone has this working on rg351v let me know thanks.alternately i just saw a r36s on aliexpress for £23 that is the kinda price i like
amazing! will this work on rg353v?
do you happen to have a list of the controls? like which buttons emulate which
D-pad = Navigation B = Edit A = Options Y or L2 = Shift X or R2 = Play R3 + Up or Down = Brightness Up or Down FN + Select = Shutdown
I've just tried this on my r36s. Installed really seemlessly, but when connecting to the teensy I get significant delay when playing sound, like 500-1000ms. Any ideas what could cause this? Im just using the stock card that came with the device so might try a faster memory card...
Same here unfortunately - but the stndbye and wake cycle seemed to .. eh ... clear it =) ?
Hi, thanks for all this hard work! I Do have an issue though, I can boot into M8 headless fine, but I am getting no response from the controls at all. From what I understand the correct inputs should already be mapped? Am I missing something simple here?
i follow the steps listed and flash the file to my sd but after i install in my rg351v it doesn’t show that particular sd card at all anywhere but with my to other operating system sd cards and my memory sd card they all show up fine . The sd card appears to be flashed correctly as it shows the files are on it when it’s plugged in my mac . i couldn’t get m8 headless to work on my ark os sd card either so maybe im just doing the steps wrong but my m8 headless tinsie works fine on my mac and pc laptops . im just never able to get it to work on my anbernic rg351v ever for some reason.
Is it possible to use headless with anbernic 280v? Or 351m? I got both but hasnt seen any tutorials on them
The 351m is the exact same as the 351v (which has a lot of support) the only difference being shaped and size
@@ashrub4991 yeah i got to install it onto 351m and it works well but i couldn't change hotkeys
This is great. Ive managed to run Sunvox on the r36s but didn't know about antimicrox, so I didn't had a way to control it. I'll try again with your method. Thanks.
Thank you for keeping this up to date , already 1.3 ! A few questions : Does this version is based on the latest M8 firmware version ? - Can you change the volume level directly on the R36S ? Thanks again for your work i really need to buy an r36S to try your port .
I got a black screen so coppied the rk3326-r35s-linux.dtb file for the one from the SD card that came with my R36S and set this to load in boot.ini and this does make the screen work and I can play M8 BUT I cannot get any EDIT key to work (I am guessing it should be the B button?). So for PLAY I can use the X button and the Y (SHIFT) and A (OPTION) buttons work but without an EDIT button I cannot make it work properly!. Do you have a way to edit the button parameters so I can get the B button working as EDIT? By the way - my R36S has a file called R36S V5.txt in the R36-OS (16Gb) partition. I guess this means I have a version 5 R36S with yet another variant in hardware. Thanks for the good work you are doing!
Thanks for the feedback and your words of support. I just uploaded an update and added a folder called "m8c-settings" in the boot partition with an .ini file to configure m8c. The m8c config file uses SDL bindings for the gamepad input, figuring out which number corresponds to which button is was a bit of trail and error for me. I will look in to the different versions of the R36S. I'll probably add the different .dtb files for the other variants in future versions.
@@roterodamus Fantastic - will look now and give it a go. Thanks for your work and the speedy response!
Yes this works! All buttons now working and I did not need to modify the m8c-config.ini file. I still needed to copy both DTB files (rg351mp-kernel.dtb and rk3326-r35s-linux.dtb) and change the boot.ini to reference rk3326-r35s-linux.dtb to get the screen working. Any chance of a brightness setting that can be added to the m8c-config.ini file ? 🙂 Thanks again - I do have an RG351V on order but while I wait this little R36S is great with your M8 "Arkos light" image.!
