Stabilizing Original Sewing | Book of Hours with Parchment Textblock
See how I stabilized the original sewing on this partial book of hours (circa late 1200s - early 1400s) without disturbing the original sewing.
I discuss the problems and opportunities presented by the condition of this parchment text block. I explain why this minimally invasive method redistributes stress away from the original sewing, providing some protection.
I also show the fancy, custom housing I made for the item.

what other kinds of glue are used for book binding? im getting the sense that hide glue is more old fashioned, so would more recent glue techniques be removed in a similar fashion? (with the water soluble poultice)

Seeing this I was just thinking about the old family bible, and if my mother could have had it conserved years ago. Unfortunately it was/is in far, far rougher shape - last time I remember seeing it, it was actively disintegrating, the pages so brittle they were turning to dust. I'd love it if the marriages and deaths plates survived, though knowing my mother it might be gone by now.

These videos very high quality and so thorough. Grateful for your example. On my smaller King James Bible, i will likely simply cut the remaining little of the front side (cover side), and then just glue beneath it and press it back together. I know difficult for you to comment on such a quick repair, but would there be an appropriate 1 size fits all glue that i should use? And where to acquire it in Canada. I will avoid construction adhesive, but it was my initial go to.

Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) is typically what I use. First, I consolidate the leather with Klucel G that I mix up with a 100% isopropyl alcohol. I let the Klucel dry overnight before adhering with PVA Your book may have some complications or considerations that I'm unable to account for, so please use your own judgment!

Everything is awesome except it does seem like your taking way too much material off the length of those spines and it's original attachments. I.e; your painted paper should be covered more by the original leather. I would not have been happy about that, Everything else though 👍👍

Very beautiful to see. If you could answer, I would appreciate it: What type of material did you use for the spine, the one you painted brown? At first it looked like paper, but when used, it looked more like leather. Thank you very much and I wish you and your projects much success and long life. Salvador-Ba/Brasil.

Have you ever looked into using ethylene oxide sterilization to stabilize paper artifacts? I've used it on a few trial pieces and it seems to work well without apparently damaging the artifacts. I'm concerned about using it on more precious objects without feedback from archivists and restorers that have experimented with it.
