    Can you share what curriculum the school you work at uses? Is this something that we only have a few options used across the US?

    • @littleslovelearning
      @littleslovelearning 14 дней назад

      At the school where I'm a substitute, the teachers use Fundations as their phonics program (www.wilsonlanguage.com/programs/fundations/). When I tutor older students, I use the program UFLI from the University of Florida (ufli.education.ufl.edu/foundations/toolbox/). This is a great option because the manual is inexpensive, and everything else you need to implement the curriculum is FREE on their website! It's amazing! When I'm teaching preschool, pre-k, & kindergarten, I use my own phonics program (which I call "P.L.A.Y. for Reading Success"). My program focuses on letters & sounds, digraphs, and blends. We don't get into more advanced concepts like magic e, vowel teams, or diphthongs, which is why it's perfect for the younger grades.

    I am going to respectfully disagree. You bring up letter strokes...Only 6 lowercase letter compared to 11 uppercase letter have diagonal lines which have been proven by both professionals in educational psychologists and OT's to be the hardest stroke to form. I want to also bring up pencil lifts. 19 lowercase letter use continuous strokes, which promote fluency instead of over relying on visual feedback. You are correct on the starting points all being the same in uppercase letters. It has also been proven in research that clarity is of concern, when starting in all uppercase, because it is harder to transition to lowercase. Which, writing and reading go hand-in-hand; moreover, 95% of all letters in reading and writing are in lowercase letters. You have some good points, but one I'd like to point out you said was children being familiar with writing around them like environmental print (stores, etc.), seeing the Target sign and a child pointing and saying, "Target" is a pre-reading skill and not a pre-writing skill.

    • @littleslovelearning
      @littleslovelearning 25 дней назад

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. I appreciate the ability to have an open discussion about this important topic. My current recommendations are based on the advice of occupational therapists such as Dr. Calli Studebaker, OTR/L (www.confidentkidstherapy.com) and Kelli Fetter, OTR/L (www.handwritingsolutions.org). These two occupational therapists have guided my recommendations and I trust their professional opinions. As I'm not an occupational therapist myself, I rely on their expertise and advice. From my own experience in education, I have seen many students enter kindergarten "drawing" lowercase letters because either 1) they were not given handwriting instruction in preschool yet were expected to write lowercase letters in their name & journals 2) they were given handwriting instruction in preschool, but they were not developmentally ready to write lowercase letters at age 4 or 5, which led to "drawing" letters. From what I've heard from Calli and Kelli, most kids' hands are not quite ready to form letters (either uppercase or lowercase) in preschool, but the education standards aren't aligned with child development (one of many situations when this is true). They recommend a lot more fine motor development in preschool than any formal handwriting instruction.
