Cause for Hope or Hand-wringing: Perspectives on Young People Leaving the Church
Program Date: August 29, 2024
Program Description: The data-driven narratives around the disaffiliation of young people from the church and polarization in the US today are often presented as bleak stories of waning trust, declining belief, and lack of community. While those narratives are true in part, they aren't the whole story: bringing theology and story to bear on wider sociological trends in the religious and cultural landscape, Ellen Koneck will make a case for hope instead of hand-wringing.
Speaker: Ellen B. Koneck is the executive director at Commonweal Magazine, the oldest lay-edited Catholic journal in the United States. Prior to this role, she was the head writer at Springtide ...

In this talk Prof. Demacopoulos never mentions why the Church of Moscow is not in communion with the Church of Constantinople. He only mentions that the war in the Ukraine has exacerbated a "schism” between Moscow and Constantinople. While the reality is, this split between Moscow and Constantinople, was ignited by the un-canonical actions of the Ecumenical Patriarch. In 2018, with the stroke of pen the Patriarch of Constantinople granted autocephaly to Ukrainian schematics. The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew recognized the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as a separate Church from Moscow. It seems many western academic circles are quick to criticize and place all the blame on Patriarch Kyrill of Moscow (and especially they blame Putin) for the differences between Moscow and Constantinople. However they totally ignore the strange and abnormal way in which the Ecumenical Patriarch granted autocephaly to the Ukrainian schismatics. They also ignore looking into and reporting on what the motivation was for the granting of this autocephaly. The granting of this autocephaly was a complete reversal of recent historical statements of the support by the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Church of Russia in the Ukraine. I find it tragic and ironic that now those very schismatics are persecuting Orthodox Christian parishes, monasteries and communities in the Ukraine that have been historically in communion with Moscow. The schismatics justify their brutal actions by accusing these Orthodox Christinas as being Russian spy agents! Sadly these tragic events are not widely reported in the west. All the while the Patriarch of Constantinople communes with these Ukrainian schismatics. The local Orthodox Churches that choose not to recognize the autocephaly and therefore not to commune these schismatics are not bought off by Moscow in my humble opinion. They are only following the cannons of the Holy Orthodox Church. My question is this: If indeed Moscow is buying off these local Orthodox Churches, thus coercing them not to go along with the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople, who then is buying off the Ecumenical Patriarch? What was his motivation for granting the autocephaly? I’m just asking, could it be the U.S. State Department, which perhaps views Orthodox Christianity as an obstacle, a threat to their world wide hegemony? Why would the US State Department view Orthodox Christianity as threat to their hegemony? I will answer this question with a question; how do you control nations and people that pray, fast, follow HolyTradition, and are disciples of Jesus Christ? The short answer is, you don’t. Because Orthodox Christianity is a mystical Faith not of this world. When the Orthodox Church in Russia was persecuted by the Godless government of the USSR, it only became stronger. The powers of this world, especially in the west, will never understand the Orthodox Church is not of this world. Glory be to God for all things!

Two questions: What would the presenter determine to be the preeminent priority for life issues? And, is it wrong for a person or a group to concentrate efforts on one specific aspect of the defense of life (the unborn, education, health, migration, the elderly, etc.), or is it mandatory that every person engages in exactly equal time and effort in all the causes involving life?

Great video. Thanks. I dig the speaker and his thoughts. It still smells to me like the church, and really all churches, are built like most institutions, to first and foremost give a very comfortable and privileged life for a few at the expense of the many. The social benefits of such institutions seems really to be a secondary concern. It's the same story from the beginning of time. A lot of people are just greedy and selfish, and they don't mind the pain of others, so long as they are happy. Society is complicit with this, often through ignorance, but also through denial. I say keep it simple. Priests and popes and cardinals should live in small apartments and do their laundry, cook their meals, and drive or take the bus like the most of us. Get rid of the secretaries and chauffeurs and the assistants. Be a regular person, then I might have more respect for you. You aren't changing diapers in a nursing home, you aren't rushing to make burgers and greasy fries at a fast-food joint, you aren't welding pieces of steel in workshop, you aren't dealing with nasty customers as a Wal-Mart employee... that's privilege enough. You are already lucky enough to have a clean and easy job, sitting and talking all day. It's greedy to want more, and it's sick to need have sex with kids and get away with it. These guys are evil. And people are foolish enough to buy into it. Ugh. Wasn't Jesus poor? Be like him, and maybe I would take the role of priest semi-seriously.

The NT was written in Greek, the Apostles called him Ieosus Christos, which translates to Jesus Christ in English. I do not understand why people say Yeshua when, if anything, if you want to be accurate to the original language it would be Iesous. But it does not matter, because the wonderful works of God were spoken in many tongues on pentecost. That includes Christs name.

    • @JW-ly2eo

@@spiritspeaksofhim6436 Yeshua is the Hebrew name for the Greek Ιησού. The New Testament was written in Greek but he may have been called by his Hebrew name. In Zechariah 3-6 Joshua (Yeshua) is a type of Jesus so that would be the name he was called by. In the Greek lexicon the name is Iesous and the English transliteration drops the I and adds the J making it Jesus. My prayer is that this may help. God bless you.

Jesus warned us about those who 'exchange the Word of God for the traditions of men' - and Catholics are the leading culprits! For example, Jesus said, "My Father will give the Holy Spirit to whoever asks of Him." Notice that, just by asking, you can know Christ, be born again, made into a new creation. Yet, Catholic tradition says that, in order to receive the Holy Spirit, you must be baptized and partake of communion - of course, only and exclusively within the Catholic church - yet with no assurance of salvation! To put it another way, Paul wrote, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)." Yet, the Catholic gospel is, "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord, is baptized Catholic, and partakes of Catholic communion might be saved." This is no small matter, as Paul also wrote, "Whoever preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed." Is your Catholic faith really worth an eternity of suffering? You must be born again! You become born again by asking! "Ask and you shall receive," says the Lord. I urge you not to reserve God's soveriegn wrath upon you by preaching a different gospel! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
