Vintage Guitar Restoration Part 2: Paint, Pickups, Wiring, Tune-o-matic, Bone Nut, Set up, and Demo.
In this video I finish the work on my vintage Teisco Kawai (or maybe Suzuki!) guitar. I match and repair the paint, but keep its patina. I mod the pickups with better shielding, to be less microphonic, and to be hum-cancelling as a pair. I also modify the wiring with a series parallel switch and a no-load tone pot. Then I make a custom brass quick release hardtail that retains the original chrome cover. Plus I install a tune-o-matic bridge for fine intonation adjustment. I also make a new bone nut from scratch. Finally I shim the neck and set up the guitar, then record a short demo. One track is a clean tone with the pickups in parallel, and the other channel has the pickups in series wit...

Vintage Guitar Restoration Part 1: Refretting, Shaving, and Refinishing the Neck
Просмотров 8204 месяца назад
In this video I refret, and refinish the neck from my vintage Japanese Telestar guitar. I also shave the neck into a more comfortable shape, and convert the zero fret into a more conventional Fender style nut channel.
Vintage Fender Bass Guitar Repair and Set Up (Part 2)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.8 месяцев назад
In this video I finish the work on this lovely old Fender Precision Bass from the 1970's. I dress the frets, install a new Switchcraft output jack, completely rewire and test the pickups and electronics, create a bespoke shim for the neck heel, and finally I string and set up the action and intonation.

In this video I do several little repairs to a late 70's Fender Precision bass guitar. Then I dress the frets and set it up. This is part one of two.
Gold Anodized Pickguard Quirks

In this Quick Tech video, I'm fitting a genuine Fender gold anodized pickguard to a 1979 Precision Bass. These aluminum scratch plates date back to 1957 and the first year of Leo Fender's redesigned P bass. They were also used in the 80's and 90's with the popular 57 reissue Precision. Weirdly, their screw hole pattern is different from standard pickguards.

Neck Heel Screws or Threaded Inserts
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.11 месяцев назад
In this Quick Tech video I talk about my approach to using wood screws in Fender style bolt on neck heels. I prefer to coat the threads with thin CA glue, then I also use a small smear of lanolin grease. This is both to lubricate the now harder threads and also to protect the fastener from rust. With these two steps, the screw will always "find" the original thread when you reinsert it, instead...
How To Fit A Guitar Neck And Vinyl Wrap A Pickguard
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This is an update on my project Jazz Bass. I featured the neck a few weeks ago when I leveled the refretted the fingerboard. This time I'm fitting the neck to the body (more complicated than you think!),, and using black vinyl wrap on the pickguard. I have made a video about this in the past, but I have worked out a few new techniques for doing this.
Another Small Guitar Tattoo For My Project Jazz Bass Headstock #basstech #luthier #fenderjazz
Просмотров 74711 месяцев назад
Here I'm doing another "tattoo" on my project jazz bass headstock. I first tried this technique on Projecct Berocca. It was inspired by seeing traditional Polynesian tattooing. It is also not unlike the old craft of scrimshaw. The track is "The Rocks". You can find it on my Bandcamp site.
Goodbye, Trolley of Doom.

In this video I upgrade my bass rig trolley with new castors, corners and a paint job. I made the trolley many years ago and it had a unique feature that I no longer use. So I wanted to document that before it was deleted forever.

Hey Rob, what bass are you using and what pick ups are installed on it? Sounds amazing!
Also can you share the link to the primer… ? Thanks
What is the primer pen used for ?? Does it remove the previous glue or just roughs the surface?
What do I do if my wire got caught on something and it just stopped working
10:17 Doesn't the *"S"* stand simply for _"Six"_ ?
👎👎👎
Hello Rob! Amazing video!! I Live in southAmerica and it is very difficult to find a logarithmic pot, can i change the pot for a 20 or 50 K linear pot?
Your tips and tricks for vinyl wrapping the pickguard helped me a lot. Thanks.
but how do you test your multimeter's battery? why you no say?? 🤌🤨🤌
Nice video! On my active 2 EQ band Sting Ray, the battery has two wires. Red one goes to + and black to -, but then there is a connection on the circuit plate called "G". Do you know, were should I connect it?
Thank you for the video. I can't find "No-Load" 25k pots anywhere for active pickups. Your tutorial saved me tons of headaches. 🙂
Photo shop is a great touch, good video
tremeeeendo
Perfect work. The best guitar shielding manual I've seen on YT. Thanks !
Did this build NEED the phase protection? I found a deal on an xtct and a mid module and wanted to make a pedal out of it
Awesome Rob, first time on the channel and I've already subscribed and liked it. One question, if the pedal has a processor chip can it be considered a digital pedal? Great discovery this channel. Thank you very much!!!!!!!
Im trying to find the spray paint video you mentioned Can you post a link please
And seriously who is scratching their fingers on pickups? What kind of room temperature IQ morons are you fixing basses for?
Oh yeah sure I'm definitely going to do all that math and sanding in order to achieve the most imperceptible improvement in playability over using a bit of credit card.
Los míos no vienen asi
mine is white 💀
Hi mate. Stew Mac sell white CA glue.
@@RobMods Nice that great than for letting me know
The neck profiling section of this vid was a huge help, and right on time. Much appreciated.
great!!!!!!!great!!!!!fantastic!!!!! subscribe and thank you so much!!!!!!
Oh man I so need you to do my frets please and I’m told I need to add a washer to my truss rod as the adjustment screw is in there a bit to far . Can you please send me a link I can see you’re pricing.
Do you have the schematic for the whole wiring for this
Fantastic precision work from the best luthier on YT. Excellent, I really enjoyed that.
Sure if you want your canvas to be the same as Marcus, it's simple. An Ash jazz bass with maple board, Fatbeams, 70's pup spacing and a TCT. The only thing missing is the biggest part, Marcus. A canvas is nothing without his chops.
Would love to see a dry kill footswitch mod too.
check out the celebrity pedals taylor shift 2
Great job. The other mod that would be worth doing would be a dry kill footswitch. Being able to sweep the LPF via an expression pedal would be cool too.
Are those the red, yellow, blue $15 nut files I have seen on Amazon? If not, how much were your nut slot files?
I accidentally dropped a little metal thingy close to my Jackson bass and now it has its first chip. +10 years in perfect shape, guess it's time to learn how to fix that little imperfection (I think I'm the only one who can really see it xD)
Thanks!
Amazing glimpse into the skill and experience needed to be an artist at effectively prepping these incredible musical instruments!
Thanks mate. I still play this bass all the time, although I don't gig with it as much these days.
It seems I have one more DIY project to have fun with. Thanks for the content mate! Greetings from Brazil
Best explanation of noisy pickups I've seen. Essentially, the transference of hum from the body to the circuitry is via an electrostatic route. It's often discussed as though it was electromagnetic.
Great - I very much like the "untamed" resonances tones
Huh... I thought he installed a Sadowsky 2 band pre-amp in Marcus' bass.
Do other countries call it earth instead of ground?
Yes
Great tips, thankyou! Thorough
Excellent video, excellent method, thanks for sharing it. Tip for removing seized screws BEFORE it breaks: drill out head with left-hand twist drill bit. It’s a thing and they can be bought. Run the drill in reverse, the vibration, heat and reduction of material will cause the drill bit to actually extract the screw. I have had a 100% success rate removing seized screws like this. I learned that in aviation mechanics.
Thanks for sharing that mate. I'll definitely try it next time!
Help bro I have JBL E55BT .. My JBL can't be turned on, when charging the charge indicator is on and when using the cable it turns on normally.. What do you think is damaged? Thank you bro
Love your trolley ideas for my portaflex sb12 p Jess Oliver would be impressed😊
Yes I've enjoyed watching, Recently I've installed a artec pbass neck pickup and a jazz bass bridge pickup to my first project jazzbass, moment of truth, ived plug it in, to see what's the results,, turn each volume and tone , there a hum, but when I accidentally touched the pole piece of the pickups.. owww much disgusting hum, and I think I need to try reverse it's wiring.. I've done everything.. nothing works.maybe this is my last hope.thats why I need to say this ..thanks a lot sir
The coils in a P bass pickup are wired in series, so it's impossible to have both with their inner windings to earth. So one coil will always hum when touched. So if wired correctly, one coil will be quiet when touched, the other will hum a little bit. I have my P bass with the quiet coil on the E/A side since this is where my thumb often brushes the pole pieces.
What about 9volt 'phantom power'? Since an active instrument must be plugged in, why not power the preamp with 9volt dc phantom power like condenser mics are powered everywhere?
This has been done. I'm pretty sure EMG have or had a system that did that. And probably one or two other companies. I designed a buffer in a phono plug many years ago that was powered by an offboard 9V. And I've made quite a few P48 powered devices over the years. I think the reason it hasn't become more common is that 9V batts are cheap and in most cases, they last for many months, even years in most active guitars.
@@RobMods Or maybe we could use a TRS with phantom 48v power 'resister'd' down to 9volt in the guitar electronics cavity. Be a great upgrade to never need to worry about a battery dying.
WAIT! A _pro_ player playing a squire?!?!? 🤯😂 Gotta say - I’ve got a squire Classic vibe P bass sitting directly next to a couple boutiques that are each worth more than moving the decimal on the squire 😂 A great setup like this makes a massive difference. This is the bass every beginner (and pro!) deserves!
Thank you
Thanks Rob!
Excellent presentation. I've been building for several years and I believe I've picked up more than a few useful techniques from this video. Many thanks!
Thanks for the kind words Mitchell. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
