The opening months of 1994 were a grim time for music fans in the UK, awash with crusties and bad grunge impersonators. The gig circuit was dead, and despite the stirrings of what would become Britpop, Cool Britannia still felt a long, long way away for those of us imprisoned in satellite towns.

For a brief moment, it looked like two bands were going to change all that forever. These Animal Men and S*M*A*S*H were two bands with a shared destiny. They played gigs in those towns within days of each other, they released records at the same time, they mounted a dual assault on TOTP, created outrage and abject terror among Tory MPs across the country and changed the lives of the small tribe of believers with a year of explosive, incandescent shows.
