This monastery, once a Chartreuse, was taken over by Carmelite nuns in the last century. It is a Carmel founded by an aristocratic Italian woman, Alessandra di Rudini, who had converted years before from a notorious life as mistress to the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio. She founded several other Carmels in France before Le Reposoir. She had to leave Italy because of her notoriety, her father having been very important in public life. She led a saintly life after her conversion and there is an interesting book on her life containing many of her letters. There is an English translation by Carmelite nuns, but it is difficult to obtain, a book which could be of encouragement anyone who has converted from a sinful life. I found it very uplifting. Reposoir was her last Carmel. +
