New 3DS or New 3DS XL. 2DS is extremely cheap and the buttons suck to press, New 2DS XL is just as cheap and very fragile.

I recommend the “new” one, cause they have a better hardware, uses microSD cards, and you can use amiibo easily

New 2DS XL felt like a decent middle ground. Not too expensive, but also not too cheap. Also served as a decent budget handheld if one couldn't get the Switch.

I was thinking about this system recently unless I’m wrong I think that the top screen is the only thing on the top half of the system. I think this model was also designed to sell special editions since they all seemed to use a different mold for the top half of the system

The 2DS wasn't released at the same time as the Switch, dude. It was released a bit after the 3DS XL as an alternative to the 3DS because some people's eyes couldn't handle the 3D effect, and for children.

This was my 2nd DS after my orginal 3ds xl breaking and I live it but it sticks out weirdly in the line up but it's a cool add on for the C-stick and extra button. I only really like it for minecraft tbh

I feel like the N2DSXL was just there as a cheaper alternative and an update to the original 2DS. It greatly improves upon the original 2DS design by making it a clamshell instead of just a plastic slab. I remember seeing a lot of broken 2DS screens compared to any folding DS screens just because of the lack of a clamshell on the 2DS. Ontop of that, the folding DS models were just miles easier to hold for a small kid compared to a 2DS. Even being all grown up now and having fairly large hands, I still prefer a folding DS over a 2DS. Also the N2DSXL was definitely a goodbye to an era, the GameCube reference on the shell, the camera being in the same spot as a DSi, and even the ease of access to the SD card slot which I believe to be a nod to the modders who don't feel like opening the back up every time they need to load new roms. Yes I know that last one is a stretch, but I feel like the legal team and design team have two entirely different views on modding and the ease of access was a way of subliminally saying "go nuts"
