Mid-week morning duck hunt in October
Took a morning off work to hit a river slough. First time hunting this spot and it was a gamble but ended up paying off. 5 ducks on the day mallards, widgeon, and teal.

Grouse Hunting to Close Out 2023
Просмотров 6373 месяца назад
Little late posting this but Mac and I got out after birds at the end of December to close out 2023. This was such a crazy December with record high temps bringing out of the ordinary late season conditions. We connected with a few and were happy to end the season that way.

2024 Turkey Hunting Northern MN (Close Encounters and Illegal Road Hunters)
Просмотров 4326 месяцев назад
Got out early to do some scouting and found lots of birds moving around, Toms all fanned up going after hens. Went out in Season A to try and capitalize on the mild winter and moving birds. We had a few close encounters that got messed up by others and myself. The part where the guy stopped on the road was especially dicey because the turkeys were between me and him, I could've been picking lea...
Mid-December Grouse Hunt
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I went on a mid-December hunt with my buddy Matt and his brother Jon. It was very weird December weather, but it seemed to work out. We saw over 20 birds, got a lot of shots off, Jon got his first birds, and it wasn't cold at all outside. Very good hunt nearing the end of the season.

Grouse Hunting after Deer Opener (Early November)

The guys left deer camp on Sunday around 10-11 am and I stuck around and decided to get a little bird action in as I had seen far more grouse during opening weekend than deer.
2023 Deer Hunting (Rifle Season Zones A&B)
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.10 месяцев назад
It was a pretty tough year for hunting in northern Minnesota. I know plenty of other hunters had it hard as well. I still managed to get on deer and give myself chances but was never able to pull the trigger and knock anything down. This video will go through the year I had, the sign I found while scouting, and how I worked with the sign and the weather to try and put myself into a position to ...
My First Public Land Pheasant Hunt!! (Saw 4 Hens and 4 Roosters)
Просмотров 57611 месяцев назад
Mac, Matt and I got out in mid-late October and hunted public land for pheasants for my first time. We started the morning with a short duck hunt since we were out west then switched over once the sun came up. I was surprised how many birds we got on for me basically scouting without knowing much at all about pheasant tendencies or where they like to be. Great time and can't wait for the next p...

great video, best safety advice I can recommend is eye protection
Great video, MNomad Outdoors. Looking forward to seeing your next upload from you. I smashed that thumbs up button on your content. Keep up the awesome work! Your approach to hunting in challenging terrains is fascinating. How do you adapt your strategy based on changing weather conditions while out in the field?
I’m glad you’re liking the content! As to your question I just try to be as prepared as possible. Sometimes I have multiple spots picked out where if situations come up or weather arises I’ll have a plan b.
What chokes are you guys using on double barrels?
We tend to flush birds close so my first barrel I use just cylinder and my second I use improved cylinder (5 & 4 if you count notches)
Lake county is plump with grouse, spruce and rufflies..hit the brimson area....
I've been up there plenty. Tend to get all over just where i go each day is kind of dependent on how much time I have. Usually coming all the way up from the cities. Round trip to central is easier than Lake County.
Amazing video! Glad to see you out there having fun. I'm leaving next wednesday for my 3rd grouse hunting trip with friends. We're going to the Verendrye wildlife reserve here in Québec this time. Thanks for sharing!
Great work and excellent retrieving work by your dog!
I stayed at that Jordan campsite in September 2022 and had wolves come into camp at dusk.
That’s crazy. It was a neat campsite. I’m happy we didn’t see the wolves that close up though.
you could not party hunt togather?
Can only party hunt with valid tags. He bought the tag that day and a tag is not valid until the day after sale. At least in Minnesota…
try teaching your dog HERE seems to work well with my black lab And ofcourse just wearing a shock collar helps alot
I’ve done “here” for a while. I feel he gets very zoned in and antsy when out in the woods. Clearly a result of my self training with him. He’s not as good as he could be. That being said this was only his 3rd season. He’s much calmer nowadays and I’m finding ways of getting his focus to be better.
When talking about "4 and 5 star" ratings, where does one find them??
Bwca entry points online map. You can go in and click on the dots on the map. It’ll show campsite number comments, photos, etc. a very useful tool in planning a route
Perfect time to be in the woods. The smells are extraordinary.
You sound like me talk to my dog in the woods ...LOL my lab will be 3 this season so he's a little hyper as well. Great video
Good luck!
Cabelas instinct or Dan's. I own 4 sets of the instinct. There water repellent and material keeps you from getting tore up
West of the cities?! That's my area. Let's get out this season!
Dans hunting gear, well made and economical
What campsite was that? Looks beautiful and heading to the area in a couple weeks.
It wasn’t actually on the BWCA entry points interactive map. But if you look on a map at the south end of lake three there is a 5 star campsite on an island. This campsite was on a smaller island just west of that nice campsite.
Thanks for sharing your trip. Gotta love the pocket bellow. I never go camping without mine.
Super underrated camping tool
We stayed at that site on Ima last summer caught Lake Trout to the west. Someone left a brand new Platypus 6L gravity filter there for us too.
Oof. That’s a tough loss.
Thanks for sharing! Are you using a phone or a go pro for footage?
Just a go pro hero 8. That’s what I use for all my videos. Quality is fine. Could be better but it works
@@MNomad_Outdoors looks great! I've only ever used an iphone, but I literally just got a gopro and can't wait to take it to the BWCA next week :)
We just got out last Thursday from Snowbank to Thomas. That storm on the 18th was a blaster!
I’m thankful we got out before that. Happy you all got out safe too. Some crazy weather this June.
@@MNomad_Outdoors Yeah, we got hit about 600 yards from camp with winds shifting from SE to N when it hit. We got lucky as the wind shift helped us make camp. But 5" of rain and 50mph winds was rough going. Brandy/water helped
Nice video. Did you catch any fish?
We didn’t catch many actually. There was a good portion of the time where it was just too windy to get the canoe out. We fished for a half hour or so each evening but never got on them. Some of the guys i go with are more into the camping scene rather than fishing so our trip isn’t as fishing-focused as most groups are.
@@MNomad_Outdoors Gotcha, we stayed at the exact same spot in 2023 and absolutely loved the camping spot...we struggled finding fish but managed to get a few trout and pike. We came from Ensign lake.
I am doing this same path. No loop. End of June start date. What actual dates were you up there?
June 5-9th
Awesome video, last year was unbelievable in MN it was my lab's second season and if the bird numbers are half as good this year as it was last it'll be a great season
Agreed!
Few things: 1) Super cool trail cam footage, especially that group of jakes just gobbling in unison. 2) I appreciate a father taking/lugging their kid around while outdoors. My daughter is almost 2yo and I haul her around on my winter/spring beaver trapline and when we go catfishing on the river bank. We gotta start these kids out on the right path from the get go, so kudos to you! 3) Unfortunate about that literal road hunter and them spooking off that Tom and then running in his flip flops of all things back to his car. Some people just don't think at all about shooting from a highway like that and bushwhacking a bird.
The trail camera clips were really cool. The late season will be here soon!
What do you expect when you basically are set up on the right of way yourself lmao? A road hunter shoots at ur hen decoy you decided to put her head right at the back of your head. Probably not the best idea frfr.
You have a point, however, we were in at least 200 feet off the edge of road. Thats a lot different than pulling over and shooting from the shoulder. Is that acceptable behavior to you? Doesn't seem like ethical hunting to me.
@@MNomad_Outdoors nope sure isn’t. See my point is if you try to use maps and actually get away from the road the chances of that even happening all the sudden disappear.
I hope to get some more good scouting in before season F and get back in the woods more. For some reason up north these birds love skirting the roads in ditches though. Tough ones
@@MNomad_Outdoors come to the south east. These birds easy!
Do you ever have problems with the wild rice hulls plugging up the water pump on the motor preventing it to start.
We really haven’t. Just routine maintenance. Sheared plenty of pins on sunken logs though.
I watch your channel all the time, GREAT videos!! How far from Cloquet do you hunt? Cloquet is my hometown.
That’s awesome. If I’m up in the northeast area I’ll go around Carlton county a lot. Sometimes I’ll go north of the reservoirs past Saginaw. Otherwise I’ll hit up the Grand Rapids area if I’m north central mn.
Great hunting, love to get somewhere where there were so many birds for my dog.
All we could find in that lake were smallmouth. Glad to see you got some eye to eat.
I’ve camped there before. Not a bad little place 👍
I like you and your buddies hunting
I would like one of your hats I'm Dave my address is 55 1/2 Baldwin st Belleville Ontario k8p2v2 thanks in advance
Haha birds on clearance
Grouse take a feather from the rump one dot female two dots male
I remembered this little trick but couldn’t remember which one was which! Good info
You must be in the northern part of Minnesota to see that many grouse on one trail. We don't see them like that in Central.
This is on a piece of private that I have permission to hunt. It was very well managed about 12 years ago and is now the ideal hunting grounds for grouse. Great cover and food sources. I am fortunate to be able to hunt there. Carlton county.
That's awesome you are able to hunt that. Looking forward to more vids.@@MNomad_Outdoors
You made the most of the season and footage you captured. Fun watch! Next season is coming!
When hunting gets "tuff" you might want to change your tactics . Being a fellow MN deep woods hunter myself, I have to say I like to see your videos. However, I think you may have a little "he who wanders disease" or "grass is greener on the other side of the fence". I know it is hard to sit still all day and I am kind of sure it is not in you "yet". But you could try this one day next year... Sleep in, get to the woods about 8-8:30am, find your spot by 9am or so, sit till at least 2pm. Big bucks move in the big woods mid-day, especially during the rut. Let the other hunters in the woods be your DOGS. You stay put. I can sit all day, but most years out of the last 45 years. I squeeze my trigger right around 10-11am while "you" are walking out of the woods!!! Few times it's been around noon and have one in my journal at 1:45. It might take a few days, heck this year it was day 5 at 10:45. I've had wolves push deer to me at 12:30 and again at 3:30. I would like wolves more if there were less of them!!!. Just one little tip from an "old gray haired coot". When I was your age, I ate a couple tags because I had "happy feet" but I chased deer to others in our group, I was a good "DOG"..LOL. Keep the videos coming, be careful on the ice!! God Bless Happy New Year
Great video and capturing your first time out pheasant hunting. I've never done it but see roosters often with our lack of snow on the sides of country roads or just onto private property on my way to/from checking my beaver traps.
Where are you in Mn?
North central. In between Brainerd and Grand Rapids here.
@@MNomad_Outdoors ok
Welcome to the fine world of Pheasant hunting, yeah lots of hard walking and better train your dog to track wounded roosters,it happens alot and they can run like the wind and disappear
Nice grouse numbers, what state are you in?
Northeast Minnesota
Great hunt!😮 Keep it up !
Great video. Really enjoyed. I could be wrong in my thinking, but I would have reported those two dead grouse to the DNR. Maybe a wildlife biologist could have looked into it. I'm doubting it was avian flu, but could it have been West Nile? IDK, I think it would have just been some good info to report to the DNR. Maybe I'm wrong.
That’s actually a pretty good idea. I’ll have to do that if I encounter the issue again.
Nice huntin. Taking my shot at it in NW WI tomorrow through the week. Very excited. Choke & shot recommendations?
For the most par they should be fairly close. I’d say C and IC. If you want you could go IC and modified but I would go more restrictive than that. If it’s windy look to cover. Low spruce trees in popple thickets. Otherwise just find clear cuts near water and pines. Look for good food sources on the ground. No snow yet so they will still be hitting leafy greens and catkins.
@@MNomad_Outdoors Excellent. We own 14 acres and a good size flock of ruffed grouse live there. I plan on trying stand hunting them before venturing out to the nation forest to try. Every year deer hunting we will be sitting in the stand and they'll be right next to us playing around in the tops of our apple trees. Goofy birds. Thanks for the response!
I have cabin on the North Shore just north of Two Harbors and I've always wanted to go grouse hunting in that area.
Get out there! Birds were all over for us. Lots of land up there.
God I was up their about 7 miles from the Canadian border and got 14 grouse in total from are group
Mack was a little to exited today
He definitely was. He’s still so good at sniffing them out but reigning it in is the tough part.
@@MNomad_Outdoors still better than my dog she wouldn’t let go if she found it
Sorry but i cant watch a "hunting" video without the hunt...
Thanks for the opportunity to get out there on my first grouse hunt. I am absolutely hooked
Where (approx) in 604 are you hunting? Goes from Garrison past Brainerd north to Pine River east to past Emily and back down to Farm Island. I've spent a lot of time hunting in the south east part of that area, 155 and 173. Not the amount of deer around from years past. Wolves have moved in over the last decade. Turkeys haven't helped the grouse pop. either. Good luck this year.
My cabin is up by the whitefish chain in Crosslake. I go out along the entire North edge of 604. Typically see quite a few deer. Good luck to you as well
