My first ever jam session! Vortex club, London Prelude to a Kiss
Просмотров 936 месяцев назад
No idea what we would play when they announced my name, and the singer called Prelude to a Kiss in G (no less). I was a bit surprised when they asked for a piano solo intro but the bassist had my back and made a suggestion and off we went. Some total bloopers, but on the whole I am happy with this for a first time. I felt very safe with the bass player who was looking after me all the way throu...

Practice Journal - Gene Harris inspired bluesey scales

I took a nifty Gene Harris phrase and took it around the circle of fifths! It uses the major and minor blues scales, one going up and the other going down... Great fun to play.

This has it all - scales, arpeggios, some diminished scale stuff, left hand voicings, as well as an exploration of the different roles that melodic minor scales play over Minor 6/9, Half diminished and Dominant chords (altered or not). A one stop shop, really!

Taking a fragment of a solo and using the language over a different tune. In this case it is Oscar Peterson's solo break before his solo on C-Jam Blues, on the wonderful Night Train album, and I attempt to use it over a chorus of All the Things You Are (Ab). 00:00 Intro 01:08 Oscar Peterson original break 01:29 Breakdown of the break 03:10 Explainer - taking the first 2 bar phrase through the f...

Amazing Jan. Well done!
Nice. Swinging oboe too, often described as ‘an ill wind nobody blows any good’ but not in this case. 👍🏼

Good on ya pard 💪

Hah! Didn't think you'd get through all twelve keys, but you nailed it! And... b) using the metronome on beats 2 & 4? Genius!!
Wow Janet your videos are getting soooo good on every level!
This is fantastic! I find using hand weight to play some of the more bluesy licks helps to get the feel.
This is awesome & helpful Jan!!! Your arrangement voicings are gorgeous ❤
This is really great! I love your arrangement. ❤
Thank you so much! It has really helped me to internalise some of this stuff...
nice!
More groovy digs pard 🎹👍
When I first watched this Masterclass, I was really happy to hear you were performing. Sounding wonderful. Great job!!
Just beautiful!
Good on ya pard 💪 Delicious feel…
Good afternoon Janet, I wanted to comment. I have learned the 12 major scales. Hanon's first 20 exercises. And he was doing the first Beringer exercise. I've been here for a year and a half and I'm 57 years old. I'm learning on my own with RUclips videos, I don't know how to read music. I have seen these exercises that you propose. I would like you to please give me some advice on which videos of yours you recommend. Or any advice that you consider can be useful to me in this learning. Thank you so much. Greetings.
What a nice location, too. Well done Jan und guys
Finally!..... I now have the urge to practise scales anew! THANK YOUUU!
You're welcome!!
I really like that 2-5-1 exercise Jan. I'd love to take something similar to the Rep Club if it's ok with you. Great video!
Go for it it is all your material anyway!

All those overtones ;)
I never know how long to let it ring out at the end - it is so glorious just to sit in the overtones as the piano resonates, but it is not marked up with a pause so I think it is probably meant to just end.... but I like swimming in it for a while :-)

Thanks for this Jan. Been working through slowly 😊
A joyful solo...you have really caught his feel!. Inspiring for me and useful to see the transcription too. Love Wynton's playing
YOOOOO i like this one so much i have it on repeat
LETSGOOOO
This is just great Jan. Putting it all into a good practice session!
Lots of great content here. I had a teacher year ago that had me take through every key each motif of the Bach fugue I was working on. And, yes! By the time you can do that, the original is a piece of cake.
Nice use of the whole range of the treble register on your solo!
Yay for you Jan!! Long live Open Studio DGPS!!
This is such a good idea and a useful and helpful for my own practice as an aspiring learner!😊Less is more:-)
this is great inspiration for practicing, Jan! Thank you!
Yeah Janet! Represent!
I really like your LH voicings; is there a PDF for them?
Not really... Sorry! They are pretty much an amalgamation of the LH voicings courses on OS, plus what I have picked up from transcription plus advice from various teachers. They are my go to LH voicings, happy you like them!
