Cards with T&L like GeForce 256/2/4MX and Radeon pre-8500 like Radeon 7200/7500 only have DirectX 7 hardware support.

Also you can support some features of DirectX 8 and 9, but obviously the common feature harware are DirectX 7 and OpenGL 1.2.1 Core. Nvidia published your newest driver with OpenGL 2.0 (experimental) support in between 2004-2006.

As for NFS:HP2 game crashed when I tried to change resolution or color depth, at least I was able to lower details. I haven't played DS for many years, this is my first time after I ended that game with this card with PII 350@466 (at 350 Mhz game was unplayable while at 466 ran good all time).

Thanks, for me this card will be very handy for Diablo II 1.00 version that don't like cards that have 64 MB VRAM or more for Direct3D (this mode can run smooth under 98SE/ME). Years ago I had version that I tested before with lower clocked VRAM and I was very happy with that card at that time.

You can always try to install Windows XP on VMWare Player or in VirtualBox or try 98SE under 86Box that you can find here: 86box.net/ But best could be hunt down old Dell/Compaq/IBM PC with Pentium IV or ThinkPad like T20 or T23 (but beware of their problems with their memory slots) or R52, T40, T60. There are many options to buy. In my opinion it is a very good game, a forgotten gem really worth to play. I haven't played it further due to lack of time but I really like this game. I even read reviews at press at its time and they were also good.

Sadly I don't have these. By the way I had years ago this Trident T8900 card in PC with AMD 286 12 Mhz, as I remember Wolfenstein 3D there ran good on smallest window only, I don't remember exact model of card but it was version with green PCB. That computer died years ago and I don't have it anymore. As for things not retro enough in my opinion there are just various eras of that like era of ISA cards, PCI, early AGP, late pre-T&L, DX8.

You will see. Pre-T&L cards will return also as I investigated more situation with platform that I used with RIVA TNT when I saw that motherboard there is faulty but I will do rest of videos with this ECS motherboard and that card, hopefully hangs/crashes are there from time to time. For last Pre-T&L cards I will use good old MSI MS-6511.

@@shadowrage2593 Yes, I'm using main PC with PCIe capture card. Earlier videos were recorded using VGA->HDMI converter and HDMI recorder but that setup recorded only at 30 fps so I bought capture card. Fraps and MSI Afterburner are only for showing framerate at games, nothing more.

It has weak VRM that is causing hangs here. Better to not buy this motherboard. I plan in future to record remaining tests with this videocard and motherboard and for motherboard it will be last stand. Motherboard probably has problem with capacitors but there is a lot of them so that will cost more than buying other one. ECS is overall definitely not a good brand. I saw years ago dying motherboards that friends had from this company and I saw K7VZA that died suddenly after short use. @@patrickc8007 With PIV 2.0A my motherboard hang even during 98SE startup while 2.6 Ghz one only sometimes at games. With other cpu's also wasn't better. My motheboard could have something with capacitors. I tried few PSU's including Thermaltake 630W or another with strong 3.3V/5V lines with no luck. You can always just try your motherboard with some cpu's. Maybe yours can be more stable than my motherboard.

@@patrickc8007 I thought previously that hangs are videocard fault after I checked that more. That's why I recorded videos with T&L cards instead. But RIVA TNT will return. Remaining other pre-T&L cards (about two if they will be work stable) I will use with good old MSI MS-6511 that I used a lot with other cards. All that will come next year for sure.

Half-Life 2 isn't hard to run. Gothic II in my opinion is much harder to run at good framerate, I noticed that this game for 300% drawing distance need cpu like Pentium E5300, I remember that even Athlon 64 3200+ (939) struggled at city. By the way I haven't played HL2 for about 10 years so at gameplay look that I didn't remembered some things. At video I used 2153 build of HL2.

​@@modernandretrogaming, indeed I knew Gothic 2 was really demanding. Bad optimisation certainly. About HL2, the game is certainly better optimized than Far Cry for instance.

@@dasise1 Half-Life 2 is also easier than Far Cry. Sometime ago at Far Cry I reached Regulator level and I gave up, I still haven't returned to play further. For me even harder was Iron Storm, another forgotten game. By the way Iron Storm for PS2 was different and little easier than for PC. As for I'm Going In I think about end more missions.

Maybe COD just allocated more, as you can see VRAM usage there is constant while at Morrowind is more varied. As you can see Morrowind once almost reached as most as COD.

Years ago I used this card with Duron 1000, before with Pentium II 350 pushed to 466 by FSB up to 133 Mhz and also with Duron 800 when 1000 died due to problem with cooling (someone who sold me Duron 1000 with motherboard used instead of paste something that should not be used as that and I realized that too late). From Duron cpu's today I have only 1000 (I bought him again, that's my second one) and 1200 models. I like this series of cpu's, they were cheap but had good performance at that time.

Imagine the bottleneck was the card for the CPU 😅 This Geforce came from my previous PC, an Atlhon 500. I think I was playing the game at 800x600. I bought a radeon 9600 pro a year later and of course, the performance was better. I loved so much the game, I started working on a mod with other people. The following years, I made two storylines and many sidequests. By the way, if you like games about pirates you can find the mod on MODDB...

GeForce 256 DDR is still not bad, using TNT2-M64 or GeForce 2 MX200 that could be limit from videocard side. Thanks for the link about the mod for Gothic II 👍 From what I saw in a webpage, listing all the scores 3DMark2001SE, the Geforce 256 DDR has the same performance than the Geforce 2 MX 400. Something around 3500 points.

About 20 more AGP cards. Also more motherboards with IGP's. But I will not tell which ones. Everything will come at its time and I don't like to haste with anything.

I bring the Radeon,but I think Voodoo gonna win anyway,what i noticed with GF2 in Carmageddon 2 (DirectX6 or DirectX5 dunno exactly )quality is really bad I don't understand why,but if you go in DirectX 7 titles it improves a lot,but in Carma 2 you get better quality with a Savage4 even better then Voodoo Glide.

On other side at time RTCW was released GeForce 3 and Radeon 8500 were around already for few months and 3DFX was dead. By the way I released by little mistake with release dates at schedule two videos instead of one. Instead correcting that I decided to left it as is as a little bonus this year for everyone.

Probably yes, I'm not 100% sure about that. As you can see at one of videos latest driver caused for example lowered performance at Black&White. I always used this older driver with older GeForce cards. I only used latest one due to better compatibility with I'm Going In and S.W.I.N.E.

You can see also opposite bottleneck with this card with older cpu's. I have entire lineup of Core 2 Duo's from E7xxx and E8xxx series in my cpu box. I like to choose less known games to remind them or show that they exist. Don't worry, I have about 20 AGP cards more and I'm hunting down now PCIe ones. Only two ones sadly don't come, I have dead TNT2 with full 128 Bit but and GeForce 2 Ti Vx with 225 Mhz core clock, both didn't work at all.

Diablo II is running here in Direct3D mode. By the way this mode can run much better in Windows 98SE than 2000/XP.

Good luck with hunting down AM2 motherboard with AGP, it exist but it could be very hard to get. It will be good to look for ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA. This one motherboard can work with AM3 cpu's also like Phenom II. Sadly I don't have this one.

In Riva Tuner Statistics Server you can try set Application Detection Level to High, for me that helped with older DX7 games but not all can work, Devil Inside game for example didn't worked with Afterburner. Alternatively you can use Fraps that you can find here: archive.org/details/fraps-v-3.5.9-full Or you can try "stat fps" command in game.

I'm thinking about using it with some older cpu's. Probably with Slot 1 setup that I used for few DOS games some time ago. Series with fast cpu's are more like reference results to compare later when card will be tried with older cpu's.

Same for Gothic II in Khorinis city where it pushed cpu's like fast Pentium IV for Socket 775 or Athlon 64's to their limits especially with 300% drawing distance. Both games in term of cpu requirements were ahead of their time.

At BIOS RAM is showed at 400 Mhz in Dual Channel, every settings are at stock there without any OC. But at Windows RAM speed is showed different, I don't know why. On other side diagnostic programs aren't accurate sometimes.

I played long time ago, also Icewind Dale and Baldurs Gate. I bought Enchanced Edition version on GoG last year and I haven't played it yet. Recently I'm playing Fallout 4 where I reached 114 level and Titan Quest (where I have 400+ hours on GoG) and Sacred.

Years ago with this card I played a lot of games. Postal 2 I played just for fun I even ended this game not so long ago with its DLC and even today I still had great fun. As of other games I played on video like Gothic or Shadow Man I'm making some sort of walkthrough to show how to play them. That's good old era of gaming has so much great games while in 2024 were released about three that are worth playing. But I like to buy games few years after release fully patched with all DLC in good price.

@modernandretrogaming In 2001 I had a Athlon XP 2000+ with a GeForce 2 MX 400 64mb 64-bit,then I made the huge upgrade to GeForce 4 MX440 8x 64mb 64-bit,it was like 20 % faster from what I remember, and then I upgraded to GeForce 6200 and that was by 2005 or 2006 I can't remember, So I grew up with them also but now I lost the track of old games.

Game can start on this videocard and also other OpenGL games can run with last beta driver version. But performance will be very limited.

Years ago when I played this game with this card and Pentium II 350 this game wasn't playable. But when I pushed cpu to 466 Mhz with 133 Mhz FSB game was smooth up to the end.

As for regular GeForce 2 MX you can check videos with previous card that is this card released under Quadro 2 MXR/EX name.

So many variations of specs on this cards and GF 4MX also.,you never know what you get 😅

@@VPRHPC Even GeForce 2 MX400 has few versions with different memory clocks. Also I got not so long ago Radeon 7000 with same clocks (143/143) as Radeon VE despite 7000 written on the back. Same with TNT2-M64 and Vanta cards. Can be confusing sometimes.
