DIRT UNDER THE TIRES || Susquehanna State Park Mountain Biking
I would like this trail more if it wasn't such a rock garden.
My problem isn’t the rocks, it’s the valley hahah. So much fun downhill then you’re working so hard to get back up! Once you’re there you’ve only done a couple miles if that!
Not for nothing but patapsco sucks now! Everything is blown out and trails are always packed with people. That’s where I learned how to ride 20 years ago!
Congratulations, that is a beautiful bike.
I like that trail. I have never heard it called “spooky house”. It took me a lot of rides to get that first stream crossing right. I would always be in the wrong gear.
I’ve only heard it called spooky house or scary house a handful of times. It actually says the alternate name on Trailforks! I started looking for an alternate harder line through that rock slab at the bottom. The line from this video was the easy line. Couldn’t see through the leaves on the right.
Nice ride! I wish I could have done it this year. Hopefully I can do it next year.
Not sure if I’ll be doing the 50 again. The way back crushed my soul lol.
Nice video, that initial climb is insane. Hopefully you made it.
That's one of the rare occasions where I did. That section of roots to roll over has stopped me up so many times I've lost count. Now, 3 years after this video, that section is even worse and there's more roots sticking out that weren't there before.
Nice job,thank you.
Job well done!
Nice work, I try to do some pruning everytime I visit OUR local parks, thank you for your service.
Rockburn is a great place for the inexperienced mtb riders and a very good place for everyone to build their endurance. You just need to know that you can easily cross the road and enter Patapsco State Park, at that point you can be in trouble if you fall into the inexperienced category.
Very true.
Nice ride, that takes some endurance to go that far.
Nice ride. Definitely faster than Crackhead at Fair Hill. 😂 Looks like I need to take a trip to there.
It’s well worth a trip. If you can’t shuttle it, you’re in for some climbing. I’ve done it that way once and on fresh legs it may not be so bad, but you definitely aren’t climbing up and getting a handful of downhill runs very easily - that’s for sure!
Just one question, why did you grab the front brake around that corner??? 😂. lol JK, cool vid
Hahahaha at the end of that long beautiful downhill my brain was elsewhere (I was running late heading home) and that’s all it took. At least I fell gracefully 😬
Looks like you made it through South Park very well. Nice job making it through the little stream/gully with the grates in it. It is tricky going in the direction you were going. It was good meeting you that day. Hopefully you can make it back one day to ride some more.
Thanks for the guide! Made traversing the last bit of Bob a lot simpler without having to take out the phone at all those intersections!
Fun to watch that in 4k. Really like the pace not being too dangerous. Looks like a great ride!
I rarely ride this section cause I know how hard it is to carry speed. Somehow I remembered it being tougher than it turned out to be. I welcomed those quick descents, that’s for sure!
These are a lot of featured downhills...did you have to do a ton of climbing as well?
Yep! I’ve learned that the climbing isn’t nearly as interesting as the downhills, so I cut it out to a bare minimum. There was nothing overly interesting on the climbs, but some were steep and endless, and some were more manageable as they wound up the terrain.
Yep, Birds gets me at all the same spots. Really fun to ride there, but there are some things my brain just says nope. And I am learning to be okay with that.
Absolutely. I've always been in-tune with my limits and when it's okay to push them. For me, my limit is sometimes as simple as "getting both wheels off the ground". I've found that I'm much more willing to push my limits when I've got a clean runout to land in.
@@MBOA That's where I prefer to keep both my wheels - on the ground! :)
I used to love biking bacon ridge, I haven't really rode phase 3 that much but its pretty cool.
It’s a good spot. A bit far for a consistent riding spot for me, but the park is pretty well-laid-out.
Thanks for the ride along. I am hoping to get there in the next couple of weeks.
what trail is at 9:00
That’s ‘Yellow Trail’, the singletrack above the reservoir at Redd Park.
@@MBOA thanks!
Is this event a mass start or go out when ready?
There are time blocks where certain routes can begin. Not a mass start, but depending on when you leave for your route there could be a group of people beginning at the same time.
@@MBOA ok I understand so there is a start time but we don’t all have to start at the exact same time. Thank you.
Was this at SSP?
Yep! Best all-around trail in the park!
You always need an excuse to stop at AleCraft on the PA side!
It was a nice place to stop. Didn’t get footage of the food, but it was pretty good. Fuel for the last leg!
Gonna do it tomorrow along with a loop around BWI as part of it.
Enjoy! It’s a good ride. Pretty chill, as there’s no real hills except around BWI.
@@MBOA Yea should have done the loop first before the round trip on the B&A that hills and that last 11 miles was a bit of a killer.
Looked like a good ride. I like the short piece that goes along the creek that you are on at the 6 minute mark.
Definitely a good spot to test your technical skills as there’s no real elevation. This was the first time I rode through the rocky bit of that without having to dismount… so that’s a win right there!
@@MBOA I struggled on it many times myself. It used to be wet a lot of the time. It is fun going the opposite direction you were going also.
I wish that short piece was a lot longer. its a great little section
Looks like a fun riding spot 💨
It is!
Looks like a fun ride on gorgeous trails in beautiful weather! What are your thoughts on 30 miles in 2022 vs. 40 miles in 2023? What are you planning for 2024?
I am not doing MOCO this year; I’ve got another ride on my list and had to choose. But overall the route overviews they send out are pretty accurate I did like the 40 mile route. There was a lot of variety and enough challenge to push my limits, especially near the end of the ride. That last 5 miles or so are tough on dead legs!
Thanks for this great overview of the terrain involved. The 40 mile route for 2024 appears to have a favorable trail to road ratio; are you glad you chose that one? It looks like you had perfect weather!
Yep! I believe they say the 40 mile route is the most trail percentage for the entire route. I don’t think I spent a huge amount of time on pavement, and the gravelly bits were still exciting.
Been meaning to do this trail since I got a gravel bike.
Great video! This place looks amazing! Is it ever crowded? Are there plenty of gravel bike (very experience MTBer) appropriate trails? I'd probably skip that trail you crashed on. Peace!
I haven’t been over there since this video (not because of the crash!). Since then I believe there was some work done, but this specific area isn’t really crowded. Elk Neck State Park (just below this park) is a bit more popular, but I’ve heard that in summer time the place is infested with chiggers. I’m pretty sure this entire area is gravel bike-friendly, you might just have to work a little harder in some spots than others.
Awesome I didn’t Live very far from that park when I lived in Street MD, used to fish, swim and camp there along Deer Creek
Still lots of that going on. Sometimes I envy those folks on hot days lol.
Luv the short videos. Nice ride.
Where is that gravel trail at? Ride the C&D from time to time do not recognize the area.
The wooded gravel bit is the outer loop of Lums Pond in Bear, DE. The rest is just some of the offshoots of the canal trail that sit higher up on the hill.
@@MBOA Ok did not realize they met up have done both the gravel and single dirt track trail at Lum's
Hate the rock gardens or I would ride this more.
Ahh so they cleared some of the down trees huh? These would be great trails for the exception that so many tight turns as not really get going on them at speed. Most bridges are too narrow to ride across.
Yeah the only down trees I encountered were some huge ones on the black diamond trail. And yes, the footbridges were not built for bikes. I wasn’t attempting to pop up onto any of them for fear of clipping a handlebar in the process.
@@MBOA Hi, rode there recently and someone has built up the foot of the bridge on the campus side and can be ridden. :)
@@johncall2389 ohhhhhhhhh that’s nice!
Nice review of the trails. How many miles can you ride there?
This ride was just shy of 9 miles and I rode pretty much everything. Maybe missed one cutoff. So I’d say if you loop around to hit everything, between 9-10
Where do you park to access theses trails. Never knew they were there. I’m 40 and just getting back into mountain biking.
There’s parking at Prospect Mill Park and at HCC at Lot F and A.
Nice job!! Bike looks great too
It is a pretty bike. Runs like a dream, too.
Awesome work. My arms and legs thankyou.
Nice video, I love those trails. I have not conquered the bottom trail yet. Good climbing legs.
You can do it! It takes a lot of work and spinning, but you’ll get it! I can climb all the way going CW, but the weird rocky turn going CCW trips me up every time. Can’t maneuver the bike well enough to haul the bike through those turns.
Gotcha, that is the plan, but it is a lot of climbing.
It does seem to go on forever. I try to break it up into sections mentally. Coming up from the river is the worst of it all. Steepest bit by far.
@@MBOAthat weird rocky turn on the bottom downhill loop is very difficult, but it looks like you handled it very well.
Weird hairpin turn on the way up is a beast also
I'm not fond of the rock gardens otherwise it's a good ride.
You know it would be nice to know what part of Susquehana state park trail you are riding and where the parking lot for the trails was you started from?
Thanks, because of the edits it’s a bit difficult to add all of that info throughout the video - but in the description I have the link to the Strava route for the ride, which will help get an idea of where I rode along the way. Hope that helps!
@@MBOA your account is private.
Yes - it’s to cut down on the bot followers. At the moment, it’s the only way I have to share the route.
Ok nvr mind black and blue trails. I have rode the greenway but have neer been able to find the damn trails heads!
Yep. The trailheads don’t exactly sit next to parking lots, but once you find them there’s a whole world to explore within the park.
I live in the area where are these trails at? Don't see anything named that in Trailforks or AllTrails.
I ride there a lot. It is a little hard getting around at first. After a while you can really loop together some great trail. Lots of little fun stuff to find there. It is also never really crowded. Thanks for taking us a long. Hopefully could catch you there one day.
Isn't it hunting season?
Not to my knowledge. Haven’t seen any hunters parked up anywhere in a while.
Not in Maryland Late Fall to Late Winter
Nice video. It is enjoyable to ride there. Haven’t been there for a couple of months. Been riding at Fair Hill a lot lately. Definitely was a good day to ride.
This was the first ride in a while where I didn’t ride basically everything. It’s so easy to loop it all!
LOVE this spot! I drive down from Lancaster any chance I can get!
It’s one of my favorites. Anytime I go I try to ride as much of it as possible
I have to get there to ride. Looks really nice. I rode at Fair Hill in the snow on Sunday. Had a lot of fun!
Got a snowy trail ride video coming up in a couple days for SSP. It was tough work because nobody had ridden it in yet except for one section. At one point I was following animal tracks and that was it lol.
I would like to do this ride this year.
It’s an annual ride I can count on! I’ll be there again; probably on the shorter route again. Idk that I can take on that longer route just yet. I probably could… and even so if I am toast I can just ride the short route from any number of the shared sections.
