Even though they're objectively Wrong, I really love Mu Qing and Feng Xin in these chapters 🥲 Despite all the drama and heartache and complex bullshit of their pasts, when it comes down to it, they LOVE Xie Lian and just want to keep him safe. From an outside PoV, the Cave of 10,000 Gods IS obsessive and creepy--it's only thanks to how well we the readers know both Hua Cheng and Xie Lian that we can see it was made out of earnest love (and 10 years of desperately fivhting for any reason to keep existing, let's be real). They genuinely think Hua Cheng has manipulated and stalked Xie Lian and can onky imagine it's an intent to harm because they've dealth with so much awful shit themselves (and don't forget, Hua Cheng has been intentionally starting shit with them ever since they refused to join the other 33 Officials and Perish). And that's why Hua Cheng is so wary when he approaches them the second time--instead of, "ew ghost bad run away," Mu Qing and Feng Xin are trying to PROTECT the person Hua Cheng loves. ... That it's from him just makes it all rhe more heart-wrenching. Feng Xin and Mu Qing are messy, imperfect people and messy, imperfect friends, but they're genuinely doing all they can to protect their friend in these scenes, and I think it's really touching 🥲

I think it's really important to remember in this scene, too, that Xie Lian is a GOD, the worship of which REQUIRES idols and statues. There was a scultpure in pretty much every one of his 8,000 temples in Xianle, and Xie Lian's prepared to make a painting of himself to hang up in Puqi Shrine. So while Hua Cheng carving several hundred statues over ~10 years is still.... A Lot 😂.... it's not the same as a regular human sculpting a regular human over and over and over.

Re reading the novels while listening to your audiobook and enjoying it.

To be fair, it does sound like going from religious devotee of a god to their boyfriend does come across as a little stalkery so I don't 100% blame Xien Lan's friends for having concerns

I always forget that if Shi Qingxuan is "sweet sixteen," then that means He Xuan was also sixteen when everything happened to him and he went down fighting 🙃
