How to replace rear axle brake shoes and drums on a tractor
How to replace brake shoes and drums on a rear axle tractor. Pretty much this is the same for all axles on tractors and trailers so long as they are brake shoes and drums. I also go into how to adjust your brakes to get a legal brake stroke. Sorry, a lot of this was done one handed.

If your setup is just like the one in the video, then you need to snug up the bolts in the front. When I say "snug up" i mean where the collars behind the bolts can still move, but tight enough so that they don't fall out of the hole in the hanger. Then you need to put a mark on the floor directly below your trailers king pin. That mark will be the mark you measure to each side of the axle. I took a tape measure and measured from the mark to a part on the axle. If they were off, i went to the driver side collar and put my 1/2" drive ratchet and rotated it and then went back down and measured. Once they were the same distance i tightened the bolts down. If there was a second axle, i measured from the hub cap plug on axle 1 to the hub cap plug on axle 2 and adjusted as necessary the same way I did with axle 1. Once they were the same distance, i tightened down the bolts. Hope this helps

hello brother i’m having bad busing on trailer 1 axle, and mechanic advise me need to cut weld part from top to replace new part for bushing is this true ? i found many vedios same like you did but no one cutting weld part from top of bushing area

If the bushing is the only thing that's bad, you don't need to cut or weld anything. But if the hanger is cracked or worn out then yes it might have to be cut out and then weld a new one.

My trailer rides crooked toward the ditch. My alignment points are welded into place. Im not sure what to do?

Are you using a plumb bob to drop down from the kingpin of the trailer? I normally will measure to something on the axle that is pretty close to the actual axle, not a welded part. And then I will measure from center of hub cap from first axle to center of hub cap to second axle. Hope this helps.

Good work, to prevent the axle from dropping on you use a chain around the axle to the frame of the trailer, tell your shop manager to get you from frame jack stands.

I appreciate the feedback. I was able to get frame jack stands for future repairs. Thanks

That was a cool video I always wondered how these trailers were aligned. I see allot of companies that never maintain these trailers by replacing bushings and bearings As a truck driver with 8 years of experience, all I ever see these companies do is throw tires at the trailers and they scrub and wear out brand new tires even when they are brand new matching tires. SMH How much does it typically cost to replace those bushings and realign the axles?

In regards to tires, there are special tires that have a higher tolerance to scrubbing. They last longer, but large companies hardly use them because it's not an all position tire and you would need other tires for steering axle tires. I'm not sure how much shops charge for this kind of work. I work for a large company, so we don't get to see the labor rate and parts like other companies can.
