Ideas Box

Добавлен 7 янв 2013
Hi, thanks for checking this channel out. I've been a mechanical tradesman for over 40 years and though I don't pretend to be the sharpest tool in the rack I've been repairing machinery and making things since I was a teenager and have learnt a few things along the way. From time to time I'll post videos with hints I genuinely think might help people out and maybe a few which I think might be interesting.
removing the label from a Corona bottle with simple household items
I needed to remove the painted label from a Corona bottle. I used some simple household items.

Todays video is another of my workshop hints series, another three workshop ideas I hope are able to help you.
chook feeder, yard and house
Просмотров 175День назад
Todays video is one about our chooks, the grain feeder I made for them, also the chook yard and shed too and how we deal with broody chooks. Most of them aren’t dedicated layers but we’re currently getting 7 or 8 eggs a day. I hope it gives you some ideas on how to set out your chook yard or chook shed and I hope the feeder design helps too.
farm electric fence shorting out..fixed
Просмотров 4614 дней назад
todays video is a short one of me sorting an electric fencing issue on the dairy farm I work on. The fence was losing power and as I was out that way to check something else I sorted this too.
plastic irrigation pipe fix
Просмотров 9921 день назад
todays video is a simple repair to a small irrigation pipe from our garden irrigation system. It might seem like a lot of mucking around for a non-expensive part but we live about 50 kilometers from an outlet for these parts so it often makes sense to repair something rather than spend the time and money to replace it.
trailer socket replacement with reed switch

I changed a damaged trailer socket on one of our cars but had a bit of an issue with buying the wrong one. I explain how and why this happened, yes, it was my fault, and what to look for when buying one yourself.
Post Hole Drill centrifugal clutch replacement
Просмотров 89Месяц назад
the centrifugal clutch was slipping on our post hole digger and the whole job was nearly a disaster as the spare part was incorrectly marked, luckily there was enough thread protruding for me to spot the error in their part marking. Even if you don't watch the whole video, skip to 23.10 for the conclusion and what I found wrong with the spare part. It may well be worth a look.
drilling a hole in a saw blade
Просмотров 130Месяц назад
I had a small problem with drilling holes in a hand saw blade as it was too hard to drill, so I tried annealing it with a spot weld from my MIG welder, it worked and was much easier to drill.
Post Hole Digger fuel line fix
Просмотров 83Месяц назад
This is a simple fix of a fuel line which split when I was using my petrol post hole digger the other day. It was made easier by having a length of the fuel line in my spares.

Stihl 251c fuel tank replacement
Просмотров 2013 месяца назад
In this video I repair a Stihl 251c which had a fuel leak. The fix wasn't too hard, but would not have been necessary if I'd taken the bar off before we tried to release it from being trapped in a jammed tree branch. It was an easy enough repair, not needing any specialist tools. In the video I mention another channel where a comparison test is done on fuel ratio mixes. Check out Daves small en...
Wall clock clean up and get running

We picked up this nice old wall clock from a relative a week or so ago and I've managed to get it running pretty well. It ended up being nothing too major. I hope this helps you out.
sewing table lifter mechanism fix
Просмотров 3164 месяца назад
In this video I replace the gas strut in a sewing machine table lifter mechanism as it was not lifting the sewing machine to the top of the table. I used a gas strut that I had in my workshop so I had to modify the frame to get it to fit, but it worked a treat. I hope this video helps you if you have the same problem.
kerosene blowlamp repair, making leather pump cups and bonus Southern Aurora pics
Просмотров 3574 месяца назад
I got this old kerosene blow torch and decided to try and get it going. It wasn't too hard and I eventually worked out how to make the leather cups. Whilst editing we got a phone app notification that the Southern Aurora was active. I hope the video helps with a project you have and I really hope you like the Aurora pictures.

This Makita sander stopped working halfway through a job my friend was doing and I was asked to have a look at it. It was a simple and cheap fix and I hope it helps you with a problem you may have.

Sure glad I found this video, I've been wondering how I could get all the labels off of the bottles before I throw them away!...Just sayin'!
@@maddogmccoy3203 thanks mate, I'm glad it helps.
Washing up liquid and water and let it soak will do the job, I didn't think that Corona soft drinks still existed. When I was a child in London in the 1950's. Their trucks used come round regularly selling their soft drinks all flavours, then in later years they disappeared I think gone forever.
Not Corona soft drink, Corona is a beer brand (became a meme during COVID), The labeling is painted/printed on the bottle so washing liquid and water will no longer work.
Just a quick heads-up- it might not be a great idea to use clear bottles as any sunlight will react with the hops and ‘skunk’ your beer (if I remember correctly corona uses a particular hops that’s immune to this). You can test this very quickly- 20 mins in the sun is enough to trigger this reaction. Good luck with the competition!
@@robnhill6767 thanks mate, yes I've heard that. I keep my brews in the dark, they pretty much go straight from the dark to the beer fridge. I've not had trouble yet. Thanks for commenting. I hope you like my other videos too.

Hi, can you share me the dimensions
Hi, thanks for asking...the auger is 90mm in diameter, so it fits into the PVC pipe which is 100mm diameter with just a small clearance on the outer edge of the auger. It's 1000 mm in length and lifts the grain 800mm to the drop out tube.
@@IdeasBox thanks
Where can I but this type of Lift?
@@hassanmayan thanks for commenting. You can get them on eBay.
Hmm ... Thanks. Narrowed down my issue. My 2005 Rodeo has an intermittent issue with starting, turn ignition key on, flashing check engine light. But it's usually with the engine warm, eg with trying to restart after a short stop. Turn the key off, wait a bit & retry, & it usually starts next go. It's also slow to start when cold, even after a new battery & new glow plugs (no warning light errors with this). Battery guy thought Rodeos diesel slow start was a fuel system issue (ie by reputation), ie not usually the battery side (cranking). Anyone heard similar? Only had it 18 mths, so I'm still getting used to all its idiosyncrasies.
P.S, before I bought it an auto sparkie told me Rodeos gave him a lot of business with replacing air con compressors. Couldn't get the smile off my face when I first lifted the bonnet & saw that shiny new compressor :) .
FFS that's incredible
I found this very interesting as I bought a 200+ yr old grandfather clock, which wasn't working until a clock maker took to for a few weeks, and it now runs well. I'm amazed at all the mechanisms that keep it running smoothly. I love listening to the grinding gears as they go thru their rotation. Thanks!
Hi, thanks for commenting. I'm glad you liked the video.
hi very good but how big is the rod that goes in the middle to form the cup the one with the hole thanks
Thanks for commenting mate, the piece in the middle is 13mm oak dowel.
@@IdeasBox thanks for that A1

Good catch. It's fine to check the health of the vehicle before it starts, but bloody hell it would help to give a better clue to the driver! What if the wipers or lights blow a fuse, will it leave you stranded on the roadside?! I wonder if there is some other critical safety device on that circuit, or if that fuse something essential to the starter. Strange one alright.
Yeah, it had us stumped, a bit of a lucky/educated guess on my part. Thanks for commenting. Check out my other videos too.
I have tried three different blower covers and recoil starters. The chattering of the starter clutch caused the rope to bind inside each one. It’s a horizontal shaft 3hp engine. I did notice slight rust on the crank shaft. I will polish the spindle of the shaft and then grease it like you demonstrated. I think it will have a good chance of working, thanks!
Thanks for commenting. I'm so glad I could help. Yes, I've had the rope bind up too, no fun to sort out. I hope you like my other videos too.
@@IdeasBox Your solution worked. I was able to fix the pull starter, which was chattering, binding the pull rope, and stopping the engine after 1 minute of running. I found grit inside the ratchet gear. I cleaned that and polished inside the square tube. I also polished the rust off of the drive spindle and added a dab of grease to that. I was able to run it five minutes, no problem. Thanks.
Mine was so bad it shot recoil back out then sucked it up and bound tight so ima tear it apart tomaro and grease it
Excellent idea
Thanks for commenting. I hope it helps.
@@IdeasBox Sure
This happens a lot where I live, in the PNW, because the weather is so damp during the winter, things tend to grow rust. I prefer to use a graphite lubricant, because if the grease gets down into the area where the balls catch, it could cause the balls to hang up and the starter clutch can catch during start up. Then you have a real mess, it usually kills the engine, tangles up the rope, and sometimes breaks things (ask me how I know!). Overall, its a poor design, Briggs wasn't know for their dependable recoil starters. I've lost count of how many old Briggs engines I've just changed over to a starter cup and used a loose rope on.
Thanks for commenting. Sounds like you've had a few dramas. I hope you like my other videos too.

Has that wire been in a fire?
No mate, I don't think so, the posts closest to this section of wire aren't scorched or burnt, the other wires above and below it are also rusty but I don't know why. The wire further along is still in good nick. Thanks for commenting, I hope you like my other videos too.
