Trophy Brown Trout on Light Gear - BFS Fishing in Wales, UK.
A fish I’ve been chasing for a few years - a 50cm (20in) truly wild, Welsh Brown Trout. It was an epic experience battling this fish on super light gear, the Shimano Aldebaran zipping away, Major Craft Finetail bucking and bending!
This river was devoid of life throughout Wales’ industrial time a few decades ago, running black with coal and uninhabitable.
I’ve encountered countless large Trout here, with follows, sightings, and losses aplenty. For this reason, the pressure is on every time I hook one!
This was probably my favourite video to put together, and I’m happy with the result. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.
Thanks very much, and feel free to LIKE and SUB...

Bait Finesse Trout Fishing - Losing a Good Fish is Never Fun

What an unbelievable take from this fish... easily the largest Wild Brown Trout I’ve contacted in this river, and strong as an ox. It’s a shame the side strain I was giving it meant that the jumps are blocked by my arm. Hindsight is a wonderful thing... I definitely should have charged into the river as soon as I hooked up.

Here are a pair of Rainbow Trout falling to a 2g spoon in consecutive casts! They’re great sport on the Ultralight year, especially when you spend an afternoon catching and releasing 10 hard fighting Trout 🙌
Golden Trout! On a Molix Trout Spoon

The first Golden Trout I've seen from Shon Sheffrey Reservoir since a recent stocking. I only gained membership for this water this year but yesterday was my best visit to date, with this being one of 7 fish caught and released in a 2 hour visit.

Just a short clip showing the sport available from relatively small trout on light gear.
The dramas in this video is unreal! Great angling pal!
Quality! Which river was this one?
Outstanding!!😊
Unreal!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I'm late to this party, but that's a gorgeous brown, and it was an epic fight! The stress of watching you try to manage a big fish on light line and sort out the net...I was on the edge of my seat! 😂 Really well done, and a beautiful combo in the Finetail/Aldebaran. Loved the vid!
ok i need to do bfs now
Well done! My heart was racing and I was holding my breath too. BFS trout fishing is where its at! All while enjoying beautiful scenery. Best therapy in the world.
Damn bro that was sick! Got my heart racing 😂
How long was that splendid fish??
It was exactly 50cm long my friend!
That was an awesome catch
Great video! Looks very familiar location to where i fish and i had a similar trout there last week, unfortunately he unhooked himself jumping! Gutting! I use a budget bfs setup with longer rod , i am looking at the finetail tho, shorter rod better for trout?
Maybe too late, but….depends on the water you are fishing. In his case, as far as I could see, a longer rod would have worked as well and with regard to fighting the fish in distance would have been a better solution. A short rod is really helpful fishing really tight spaces where casting is limited due to brush, trees and other obstacles.
That was F***** beautiful man! 💥 - congrats - greetings from New Zealand!
Big thanks Chris mate! Some incredible Brownies down in your part of the world! Thanks again buddy!
I’ve just started fishing trout on small streams I’ve got to say you use that bfs rod like a magic wand brilliant video
I hope you're enjoying the small streams dude! You're much too kind about my BFS abilities though ☺
Great vid, you sound pretty local to me going to have a go at lures this season after years on the fly
Never tried this kind of fishing before.. loving the scenery 👌🏾
You should definitely try it mate, it's so much fun! Glad you like!
Which river is this?
I’d rather not slap it all over RUclips mate, cheers for watching 👍
@@TheFishist No worries, and wasn't expecting specific marks or anything - just curious as there are many trout rivers in Wales!
Awesome video and great fish, I can tell you put alot of time into that video. I have a couple of questions. 1. Is that the fine tail rod that is adjustable between 3’8” and 4’2”? 2. How is the action of the rod? Is it pretty fast or slow like a glass rod?
I really appreciate your comment my friend! It did take a little bit of effort to put together! The Finetail is indeed the extendable version from 3'8" to 4'2", and the action is definitely not slow like a glass rod. It bends well, but is on the faster side I'd say. As you can see from the video, it absorbs the jumps and lunges well from fish of this size! I hope that helps mate!
Amazing 👏
😊😍 Thank you missy!
Unreal mate.❤
Cheers Drew my boy! Glad you liked!
Awesome fishing video! I love the story behind it, the cutscenes, the editing was amazing bro! I would love to see more like that! Beautiful river, eveything is beautiful in this video. I was felt like I am being there and fishing. Honestly bro, one of the best fishing videos I have ever seen on RUclips so far. Very well done! Iam new to the fishing BTW and my first catch is a Eel from a small pond. I used an earthworm as a bait. I was expecting nothing on that day... but Iam still so happy as it was my very first catch. Liked and Subscribed! Please, more videos like this mate!
You're super, super kind mate! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I agree fully with you about how beautiful the river and surroundings are! Well done on taking up fishing, and I'm pleased you've managed to catch something already! Good luck for when you go again! Thanks very much for the subscription and the like! I also appreciate the comment massively. Cheers mate!
Awesome catch on BFS gear. I remember getting my biggest brown on BFS gear, it was such a rush. Came from a small creek I was only expecting small brook trout.
There’s not many species in UK freshwater which make me rush like that man, that’s for sure! Appreciate it my friend!
Very nice man. Congrats on the PB fish
Thank you so much my dude! 🙌
Awesome vid mate and incredible trout. That fish really didn't want to get in that net did it!
Thanks a lot, he was an absolute stunner wasn't he? Blew me away! Much appreciated as always :) It reminded me of the fish you had in our video, and the drama trying to net that!
@@TheFishist indeed! Stress then elation 💪
love the finetail rod !!
It's a great rod mate!
What a nice fish! Very beautiful river, I'm pretty sure there's more of this! We've had the same issues here in Romania during this season, let's hope next year will be better!
Thank you Andrei! It really is a stunning place to be! Hopefully its not quite as dry next year!
That first bite was savage!
It was indeed mate!
Hello mate. I enjoy your videos. I fish in North Wales for pike or trouts. Just a friendly advice…try some Duo Ryuki Spearhead or Smith D-Contact lures on those waters, they are a bit expensive but amazing lures
Hi mate! Glad you enjoyed, and sorry I'm so slow responding! I've lost many a Ryuki mate! Great lures though, but as you say they - they are expensive. The quality is crazy though
what river you on mate?
I'm on a number of different rivers mate!
Just found this video mate awesome , you wouldn't be near pontypool or cwmbran would you
Great video, what are your waders of choice?
Thanks my friend! I use Vision Atoms mainly mate!
Excellent work
Thanks Sam!
Really enjoyed that man only got around to watching your videos now, might have to target some trout in the new year 😀
Thanks a lot mate, you should definitely target them!
Hey I hope you can help me..I hesitate between Benkei 65UL and 67L..usually I use small crank and minnow bait for chub and asp fishing..what do you think which model recommended for me? Thanks a lot!
I've not got a huge amount of experience of using cranks for Chub and Asp, but I'd say it's likely the 67L would be suitable.
please wash your hands in the water before handling trout they have protective layer of slime on their body that u take of them without washing your hands. their risk of getting diseases increase.
Cheers, I knew this, but sometimes forget. I'll try and remember every time.
I'm so sorry to see you lose such a big trout Brad. Man, that's devastating,.
Absolutely heartbreaking mate!
Any more rod cast episodes on the way? I've just smashed through the 8 on Spotify ont dog walks.
This year we'll finally be getting some more done mate. Sorry it's been so long but life gets in the way!
Discovered your channel through the rodcast buddy. Great fishing keep it up
Welcome to the channel mate, and sorry I've been so long responding!
I really like your video. Just a little bit of my personal guessing, I’d like to see if drifting a 5g spoon would get any more luck, Like Daiwa Crusaders 5g.
Thanks for the comment mate! I’ll definitely be mixing up my approach next trout season! Spoons and soft plastics galore!
I love that technique
😂❤️ Thanks a lot mate!
Nice videos bro. Any tips how to start lure trout fishing in uk? Struggling to find a river wich is not just for fly fishing.
Thanks a lot mate! Glad you liked the vids! Unfortunately there does seem to be a big bias towards fly only clubs on many trout rivers man. It’s just about searching your local area for somewhere which allows it! I’m lucky here in Wales tbh!
Nice video buddy 👍
Great video buddy .i really enjoyed .i live in Wales and have olways thought about fishing that same river. A video fishing for sea trout (sewin ) woud be your duty as a welsh man surly 😉 excellent video you got my sub 👍
Thanks so much for your comment my friend! Glad you enjoyed the video, and sorry for my late reply! I’ll definitely be trying for some Sewin next year, had a few issues this year which have unfortunately put the kibosh on my plans!
How does that BFS rod compare to a finetail for trout
My personal preference for the trout would have to be the Finetail Area, such an incredible action for absorbing those jumps and lunges!
SOO COOOLLL! Ever fished in Ireland?
Thanks mate! I have actually fished in Ireland, but nearly 20 years ago 😂 absolutely loved it though!
Keep up the good work matey. I live in Pembrokeshire so will defo be trying this method on the Cleddau. There have been some nice early season trout caught here. Tight lines my friend :-)
Thanks so much Tom! I love West Wales man! Done a bit of fishing in your area myself! Best of luck, you’ve got some mighty fine water there! 🙌
Awesome video. Can I just ask, are you left or right handed? I am right handed and always cast with my right hand and reel with my left. I see so many people casting then swapping hands to reel. The way you do is the same as me, so much more control and speed when you need to re cast.
Hello there Tom, and thanks for the compliment! I'm right handed my friend, and this is the way I like to fish! I think a big factor with people using right-hand wind reels is just that they are used to that way! My belief is that it stems from a time when left-handled baitcasting reels just weren't popular. Still to this day in America most of them will cast and swap hands to retrieve. For me there is a lot more efficiency in the way we do it. Whilst it's only a split second to swap hands, over the course of a year this adds up to a substantial amount of time. Each to their own sir! Thanks for the comment man!
Beautiful videos man! Id love to see a follow up video where you go through your tackle of choice, line choices and lures ext. Thanks man
Hiya mate! You're very kind, and it's much appreciated! I'll probably include a segment in my next video which will run through some of the tackle in a more direct manner, rather than mentioning in passing! The season has started off quite hard, but I'm on the way to having enough footage to warrant a video! Thanks very much for the sub and the comment my friend!
Hi mate, I’m just getting into bfs and got a load of the zoner minnows, what braid to leader knot did you use and didn’t quite see if you tied your your fluoro to the split ring or direct to the minnow? Love your videos and footage by the way, looking forward to seeing more👍🎣
Hi there buddy! Sorry for the delay in responding! I use a simple 4-Turn water-knot to attach my leader! Just my personal preference as it’s super quick and easy to do on the bank or whilst in the water! I always tie to the split ring as it doesn’t hinder the action of these small lures attached in this way! Glad you’re enjoying the videos mate! There’s another one in the pipeline, it’s just finding the time now I’ve returned to work! Thanks mate!
Ahhh mate, no wonder you felt so upset! That fish was giving you a right run around. Made me laugh when you netted that branch 😂 Again getting some great footage of the strikes. They are so aggressive
Heartbreaking Steve 😂 It's a fine balance between giving it the beef and just pulling the hook out. In hindsight I should gone for a full lunge with the net rather than potching around! The net getting hung up can cause a verbal explosion when it keeps happening, I kept it calm there 😁 Thanks for getting your lamps around my vids Steve! Shouldn't be long before I get another out! Cheers Steve!
@@TheFishist no worries buddy, you’ve got some good stuff and more to come so I’ll be tuning in 👍
The fish that never was 😬 another cracking vid 👍
Check out the fish I lose at the end of the final video on The Trout Trilogy Steve. Absolutely sickening. 😂🙌 thanks man!
Cracking video, you got some great shots in there. Great session. Just looking what lures you lads are using as I’m in Pembrokeshire this summer and might get the chance of a trout session 👌
Hi Steve! I hope you’re well! Thanks for the lovely compliments sir! You’re going to love a bit of West Walian trouting I can tell you that! My go to lure for shallow fast water is the Majorcraft Zoner Minnow 50SP Steve - cheap for the quality and they send the spotties wild at times! Enjoy dude!
@@TheFishist hopefully so, thank you for the tip on the lure mate. Greatly appreciated 👍
Any time Steve, drop me a message on Insta if you need anything else!
