@@WolfonWheelsBE Ha, no, that was my mate, though to be fair I did not escape similar mishaps in the bad weather. I didn't know it, but I accidentally threaded the kickstart up inside the leg of my waterproofs (oilskin style, bright yellow, like they used on the trawlers) and only discovered my error when I came to a stop and found I couldn't put my foot down. Other trials of the cold. Turning up to the petrol pumps and finding your petrol cap lock is iced - warming the key on the pipes was the answer to that. Would that I still had all the bikes! The X200 was stolen and dumped in a reservoir. The XBR was written off after someone pulled out in front of me at a crossroads, I did notice they had not looked, so I was slowing, but even still, it was an impact. The GS was broken down into parts. The others got sold to fund the next buy. The GB (due to it getting quite rare and my having looked after it for a decade or more) I got £2400 for and the FJ set me back £1600 and came with a full set of Givi panniers. I've never had anything but fairly high mileage second hand old bikes, so bit by bit you learn the mechanics and the electrics as things inevitably go wrong. Aside from, as you say, the protective gear, biking doesn't have to be expensive. However, when I went self-employed fixing washing machines, I soon had need of a van! There's only so much you can carry on a bike and then, safety becomes an issue. I once delivered a TV set across the other side of Sheffield in torrential rain and a tank bag full of sick kittens to a vet (not at the same time). Though my mate, with the frozen foot pegs, had the most fun job, he transported blood and other organs between hospitals with a police escort - the most amusing aspect of that, and we are going back thirty odd years now, was that he didn't even have a motorcycle licence! I don't recommend doing that these days, what with all the electronic numberplate recognition and computer databases. Be road legal, so that when the inevitable happens, you don't have more problems than a bent bike and bruised body (fingers crossed).
