Music HerStory: Women, Zines, and Punk
Просмотров 672Год назад
Zines are celebrations of self-expression. These unique documents often combine first-person narratives and frank opinion pieces with interviews, reviews, and musings on art, music, and culture. Popular today, zine use was propelled by the riot grrrl movement in the early 1990s. They connected like-minded readers and musicians through writing about women’s issues, perspectives, and experiences....

2021 Dibner Library Lecture: What Was James Smithson Doing in the Kitchen & Classroom?
Просмотров 3362 года назад
James Smithson was an 18th century English chemist, geologist, and mineralogist - and also the founder of the Smithsonian Institution. Most of what we know about Smithson’s science comes from his twenty-six published articles, which Steven Turner studied in his recent book, "The Science of James Smithson" (Smithsonian Books, 2020). Turner argues persuasively that Smithson was much more accompli...

As a new Washington DC Tour Guide with a passion for history and a francophile, I stumbled across this video to learn more about Smithson. Not only was I so impressed by Smithson's life and this video, I wondered whether whether I would focus on Smithson in an upcoming Masters of History I am planning. However, I am not sure how much more I can add to the body of knowledge beyond what the expert historians in this video have already accomplished. In the mean time, I have purchased Heather Ewing's book, The Lost World of James Smithson. If there are other books I should look at, please let me know in the comments. Thanks!

Fascinating behind-the-scenes on a great nexus of libraries -- hope some of the other branches would be interested in doing something similar. Just one thing, though: it would be helpful if you would add to the description the various URLs referenced in the video. Not all your viewers are going to think of jotting these down while watching, plus those of us with hearing difficulties know from experience that autogenerated captions can't always be trusted. Thanks.

If you're here because you're looking for movable book/pop up content it starts around 34 minutes in. Doesn't come at it from a paper engineering perspective though, more art and design. Perfectly fine, but i keep getting recommended it when looking for pop up book content when its not quite what im looking for. The japanese section was very interesting though, and i had no idea that e books would be expensive in comparison to print.

53 minutes in Anne Evanhaugn answers a question about pop up books, that's probably it. She references the Cooper Hewitt museums collection, which i believe has its own youtube channel. They also have a brief discussion on Kara Walker's pop up book 'Freedom'. Sorry for my pedantry

I have an older paperback how-to book from Evan's Brothers of London, published in the '40s. It has part of an Evans label glued or pasted over a portion of a list of books they published back then. It appears to be adhesive-backed paper. I expect it was applied in the '50s. How would you reccomend that it be removed? The book is not particularly valuable; in fact I probably paid less than a dollar for it. Nonetheless, I'd like to make a good job of it. Thank you, Joe Ross
