During WW2, most Officers were "90 day wonders" Brining their civilian leadership into the military. As such, these officers and NCO's developed a comradery with their men knowing each of their abilities. As such, the men were able to operate at the lowest level possible. One German General commented "The reason Americans are so good in combat is because war is chaos! And the American military practices Chad on a daily basis!"

I joined the Sub force in 1977. Back then, we still had the old school sub force mentality where this is how we operated. When Regan became President, things became toxic. Top down management, micromanagement. Every day was another day wondering if we were going to mast. In 1990, I refused to re enlist. On my checkout interview I removed my Dolphins and threw them on the XO's desk. I ended up doing another 13 years in a Reserve EOD unit. In the EOD community, the Officers and Enlisted go through the same training. As such, there is a bond between us. The 13 years in Reserve EOD was like night and day

One thing his book doesn’t convey is having a good sense of humour is a brilliant tool in achieving effective communication. He is funny and engaging. This makes him approachable.

As an Iraqi from Mosul, this is the first time I see a US officer who did his homework regarding history and demographics.. when most of other colonels heavily rely on their tremendous firepower and aerial superiority..

Ever since having read your Everest book a couple of years ago, and re-read it, and again, and, yet again, I have wondered how you were and where life had taken you. How clearly I remember my trepidation when I saw that you were really, really going to take on the summit that final time - the only one of the whole team - in the face of terrible odds, I thought. And how the Sherpas got deeply frightened because of that black cloud and what it meant to them and were very reluctant to proceed. I have to admit that I was particularly fearful for that narrow, slanted, steeply sloped Hillary step that awaited you! I think your presentation was excellent and very educational. I just hope your audience might get the opportunity to read your book, as in humility you didn't expound on the rigours and intensity of that achievement and they might not have a clue of what went into that absolutely epic adventure. I know I wouldn't have. It was just so great to find you in this video, alive and well and coaching and encouraging others. And an MBE, no less! This is brilliant, I really needed this today and will take these lessons forward with me in life, I feel like it’s giving me the ability to take a step back and look rationally at how I respond to personal failures and more specifically if one of the building blocks to my mental resilience might be compromised. Do you host debates at the CAL as well as lectures etc? It would be good to hear someone challenge Arwa's ideas about unconscious bias, diversity, gender etc. There are lots of people in the public sphere who talk on these with a completely different view. Debates can be very engaging for the audience and can get people thinking when the two views are presented before them.

Thoroughly recommend reading his book "Company Commander". I am not a soldier but I learnt so much about leadership. Very gutted I gave it away on a plane and not kept for reference.

How the military is changing... This sounds like a business management seminar. The military should not be about CEO's, but about the controlled application of overwhelming violence and supporting and sustaining that effort. Where in all of this does the vital ability to lead in war fighting; the moral and physical courage to inspire determination, resilience, endurance in carrying the fight to the enemy and killing him. Future leaders do not need a different approach to those of the past, as Maj Gen Nanson suggests, instead they do need to build on the traditional, proven approach to leadership to get ahead of and exploit the ever more rapidly evolving battle space. "Army Talent Passport"? What?.... "Withstand contact with the real world"??? What about 'withstand contact with the enemy' (in all dimensions)? This is all deeply troubling.

Should be used across public and private sector

wow 3 minutes in and what a reveal !! I thought jealousy was always a foreign country so to speak and now I realize intelligence is also a form of jealousy. I always wanted to think your opposition ( way of thinking, drama, disagreements, who hope you fail ) was a different perception or philosophy, not that any man from the same side would be your attacker for personal reasons ..A VERY LONG STORY...you get yourself into your created thought ( true) you created the process of being a military WOW...commanding people ...why would you dislike your own side? long story I think it is
