Is technology going backwards? WTF. Has anyone tried using one out of cell phone range. Look at satellite phone coverage maps if you think they are worldwide. This one is supposed to be but so were the others. Now that people have tried to use them unsuccessfully they had to release coverage maps. Eye opener. Two thousand for a phone you might be able to text with.
iridium is the only one with true worldwide coverage provided you have a clear view to some part of the sky and give it enough time for one of the 66 polar low earth orbit satellites to go over. One issue though is you can get dropped calls when you have a narrow view of the sky as you can lose sight of one satellite without another one being in view so it can't do a handover. But that is an edge case of a tight slot canyon or small clearing in the trees. You are correct in saying for Inmarsat you need a clear view towards the equator and they don't work at the poles. But when you can see the sat and have a good line of sight the service is rock solid. Globalstar's coverage is a joke and Thuraya doesn't cover the Americas or South Africa. So they are both also-rans.
