I grew up on the south side of town but when my wife and I bought our first home (1992) we bought on the N.E. side on Coit ave and shortly after we discovered Taco Boy. My kids grew up on their food along with other NE establishments like "Fat Boy" & "Cousins Tasty Chicken". We've since moved back to the south side but I still grab me a "Super Wet Burrito" whenever I get over there and sometimes even make a special trip.

I like the new franchise, I like less science and more action/adventure anyway... I like this movie, but I had a few issues with it... in addition to predictability... this movie borrowed visually from OTHER SCI-FI movies. I don't have as big of a problem using previous Star Trek cannon as I do watching a brand new movie that feels a lot like other movies that have gone before it.

The point was that a brand new cutting edge sci-fi movie shouldn't look so much like others movies in the same genre we've seen before. I liked the movie and the villian, but it was difficult to talk about this movie WITHOUT spoilers

(cont.) And lo and behold, that exact reaction happened when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker and the Burton-Batman fans were not happy about it. And in a purely sci fi discussion, let us not forget the response to the reimagined Battlestar Galactica - it wouldn't matter how good the material could be, the fact that things weren't the same was an instant and unforgiving criticism of the entire series.

(cont.) They are free to do what they want, but you can understand why they might want to refer to some of the bigger things in the Star Trek mythology. Otherwise it would be like criticizing a re-imagined batman franchise for having the Joker in it, just because it's been done before.

I don't think it's a fair criticism for anyone to speak harshly of this film in relation to previous Star Trek cannon. Ultimately, these films aren't for those familiar with it. While they are given references, the actual films are engineered for a new generation and have, within the very narrative, discarded old cannon.

Criticizing Star Trek for stealing from The Avengers? Kind of like how Skyfall also stole from it? And how they all stole from The Dark Knight? One advantage that Star Trek has is that the enemy doesn't get caught in some master plan to then escape; he genuinely didn't intent on being in that cell.

Hmmmm. Not the best review. First, most people I have talked to liked this one better than the first and it IS one of the few movies that I would recommend in 3D. I would check more reviews and not just go off this one.
