I have a problem with clear. Do you clear it after 24 hours so the actual leaf can dry? Or can you clear it right away because of the hardener in the clear. I imagine without hardener clearing it with normal size would take 24 hours before clear. Never seen your vids before. Awesome vid!
Thank-you. You can wait but I have never had a problem clearing right away. And i dont add hardener to my size. Would make the timing unpredictable in my opinion.
Yes you can use stencils or tape for a clean edge. I have another video showing that process. But on this one it was just hand painted, no stencil. If you are not getting a clean edge you may not be pushing the leaf on hard enough, the size is too wet or dry, or you don't have a clean edge on the size.
hey there thanks for the video! - i have a couple questions for you-- do you find the size tach time sweet spot is different when doing the turns on composite gold, verse 24k ---etc or verse copper, or silver ...? Also what grit is on that turn tool you are using? Any suggestions i just keep burning through seemingly no matter what i do. Also what is the paint type you are adding in is that 1 shot? or acrylic ? or ???? Are you thinning the dux with turp or anything? thanks again for the help
I do not use real gold so I am not sure. Hot rod Jen covers that real well in her videos. But the timing is similar with other imitation leaf, copper, silver, rose gold etc.. i use 3000 or 5000 grit Trizact. If you are burning thru then your size isn't set properly, or too thick or you are pressing to hard or wrong material. 1 shot to add tint. Any enamel will work. And I do not thin my size. It will take a while to get solid results. It's all about timing. Watch Jens videos. She shows a cool process to learn the timing
Did you ever have the leaf bubble after a few days? Would you know the cause? I have the same project, doing 6 of them and so far 4 started to bubble and two did not.
Where did you get the variegated in rolls? Pee wee had some nice red stuff I started using on low riders in my area. Now he can not find it anymore and I've only got enough for a very small job. But I get asked for that colour often. Let me know where you found it? Please it sure would help. Thanks
@@elroypinstriping8022 if you ever find the same stuff please let me know. Sepp is looking for me and says he can find it. But I'm not holding my breath. If you find anything close to it let me know aswell. Pee wee says he can not find it either. Im trying to hang on to the last 6 or 8 ft for repairs for t he customers I did. I can not find anything that matches even close.
@@elroypinstriping8022 If you ever see variegated in rolls let me know please. Pee wee says he can get it but he has yet to come up with them. I found some from sepp but it looks like crap and will not work. Too ugly. Thanks mate.
Maybe FYI, I tried the other brand 2k clear in a rattle can, ruined two of my projects, they looked really beautiful, after 24 hours I wet sanded the fish eye out and then buffed. High gloss shine, the next day I started to see lines in the whole project thru out. So I sanded smooth. When more clear coat came I pulled the project out to clear coat, and all the lines, (really more like cracks) were worse and were raised and the surface was rough. I believe it reacted with either or both primers I used. I was using primers in a rattle can from the auto store. I am on my third project, used a different primer, so far so good.
About 45 years ago I ran the sheet metal shop for DOD, 5th Army Forward Area Maintenance and the chemist from DuPont stopped by with this new paint called Imron urethane ... Since we spray painted everything on the planet, he suggested it for the Nike missiles (Didn't use it) ... he explained that then paint was oil base automotive paint and a special hardener... Back then I did a lot of airbrush work and pin stripping on bikes, so I took some one shot and added about 10-20 percent of Imron Hardener. I had base coated a Sportster with black Imron (Free samples)... pin stripped it with a yellow/hardener mix. Let dry for 24 hours and then clear coated with Imron clear...magic... no cracks or wrinkles for 3 years when I sold it. I also tried using the same mix with Yellow Occur One shot as sizing for gold leaf name on a tank, plus one wood boat sign... I spread some of the same mix on some scrap painted metal and kept touching it till I got a clean"Snap" sound. Then I applied the leaf ... worked perfect, no cracks or wrinkles. This was on a show Dodge Van and it worked like a charm. I've never tried gold leaf size in such a mix... you might like to try it. I do mostly reverse glass work these days and floating painted images, like the old depression period Pub signs here in Australia, where I retired... You can check out the "Happy Guilder" in England as he does great work and good step by steps on you tube. Go for it ... also I feel that primers are not your problem. Also you need a spray booth as you can't buff Imron!
None of the rattle can clears except Spray Max will perform and last like an automotive clear coat. They don't truly harden and eventually crack in my experience. Spray Max does have a rattle can 2k clear that is solid and I use it often. It has a plunger to activate the hardener inside the can.
When you make your own sanding disc with the hole punch, what do you have under the sandpaper ? I tied with a block of wood, (pine) I am not having to much luck. In your video it looks like you are getting a clean cut.
Do you seal the gold leaf under a clear coat once your done? I’ve been wanting to do gold leafing on a boat name but want to seal it under a clear topcoat with the rest of the paint so it’s protected and just wondered if this was something you do on the gold leaf you do?
Awesome work buddy . How do you protect the gold leaf after finishing So that you can spray other parts of the tank? Do you clear coat it so it can be taped over?
Did you say "wait 50-55 minutes before laying the leaf"? Isn't that a bit too long since most suggest 20-30 minutes at average room temperature (~70 degrees)?
This video and your replies to the comments and questions were exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great job could you advice material name or any link to by it many thanks

Any recommendations on doing a RC car ?

Do you use stencil to apply the glue and the remove the stencil on what stage? Im trying to do thin lines with crisp edges

Don't pull because you can bend the tip like a Christmas ribbon.
Awesome work.

Only once. But I put it to close to heat so it would cure faster. What size/adhesive are you using? Any additives that would cause gassing?

When clear coating, must you use 2k clear or will rust oleum in a spray can from the auto store work? Acrylic or enamel?

When you stack the trizact foam pads on your spinning tool, is there a certain glue you use.
Just a dab of super glue works fine

Thick plastic cutting board.
What paint did you use for the pinstripe design is that a gold paint?

So I’m trying to make a little golden book with a gold leaf trim on the corners. Can you draw on top of the gold leaf?
Man you are clever and really talented.!!!.I'm sure your viewers appreciate your advice and honesty as this type of thing can be full of ego!
Wow my right pinky would be smudging it all over!you have a great flow.
Can u put leaf over clear?
I wanna start this technique for bottles. Can I do this?
Dude, a one shot tattoo? haha, now THAT'S dedication! :D Great work, b.e.a. leaf and cool pin patterns!
I'm thinking of having a go at this soon, there's a lot of different techniques out there!
What brand and size tape do you use to make clean turns
1/8 inch tape. 3m. Or FBS.. They even make smaller 1/16 and 1/32. I dont know. Whatever works dude.
What brand and size of tape do you use to make clean turns
What's the best way to keep the can of sizer from drying out?
Are the drill bits available to purchase?
Great demo!!!!
Good vid man. Thanks for keeping it simple.... about to try for the first time.
Did you tattoos hurt
Lol.. Thanks for watching
Even after 4 years since this video was published it helped me finally finding a good way to trim new brushes. Thank you El Roy !
Glad it helped.
Oh snap! How did I miss this???!?! Welcome back ElRoy! Sweet video bro
Could you do this to a gun? Like on the upper slide and handdle the heat?
Awesome work buddy . How do you protect the gold leaf after finishing So that you can spray other parts of the tank? Do you clear coat it so it can be taped over?
Everything was cleared after leaf and pinstripes. And even with clear coat, I avoid tape over my leaf.
Great tutorial Bro! Good to see you still doing your thing. 👏🏼👍🏼👊🏼
Does gold leaf scratch off easily?
Yes. But we generally clear it.
Thanks man!! I’m gonna have to get some of those pads!
Did you say "wait 50-55 minutes before laying the leaf"? Isn't that a bit too long since most suggest 20-30 minutes at average room temperature (~70 degrees)?
Thanks for sharing this. Do you have a wet dry sand paper on the pads? like a 5000 grit?
It's TRIZACT pad. 3000, 5000 grit foam sanding pads.
Thanks for sharing this video. Do you go straight over this with 2k clear? Are you buffing the tank before gold to prep it for the clear later on?
😱😱😱
Awesome! What kind of paint do you use for making the gold size visible? Is it enamel or does regular solvent paint works too?
Looks nice ...but why would you pinstripe a Harley fairing upside down?
👍👍👍
