I'm an old guy trying to read modern a musical transcription. I found the answer to my C2 question here. Thanks for that! I was taught that the D you indicate is a 2nd or a 9th to the tonic key of C. It has little or nothing to do with the root triad of C E G. It should probably be indicated as an added note in the chord description above the music.

Surprisingly you can play in C major using the notation of a musical piece in C# except, of course if there's any accidental. I call this the lazy method 😂

why do they call it a C 7th when it's not even a note in the major scale? The 7th note would be B, and this is a C major chord. What's the explanation?
