Thanks for posting these!
Missouri Department of Foresty sales Hazelnut bushes
I have a buyer that gave me 7.00 a pound in 2023 out of husk
Hi Bob, let me know if you need more, we are done picking now and starting to husk.
He had me complete captivated, inspired and completely motivated to jump into my next project especially considering my age.... until... that word.... "round up". 😪😪
Thanks for the video!
Roundup is dangerous
Where can one pick up an Iowa Pecan tree?
Could you share the variety names of the Hazlenuts that survived the -30 degree winter? Also, could you tell us what variety of cherry tree produced after a -30 degree winter? Thank you!!
Add bird netting?
This was an outstanding learning opportunity for anyone wanting to learn how to grow hazelnuts. John is one of a kind and provided a wealth of information. I appreciate the tip on Foggy Bottom as well. Thanks to this podcast I found out about them and was able to place my first hazelnut tree order. Thank you for sharing such great information.
What are the chill requirements to produce nuts?
Very interesting! I hope to purchase some Hazelnut trees this year.
Thank you for this recap, I would've liked to have attended but couldn't make it work this year, hopefully some year soon. Always enjoy your videos and Northfield looks like a very charming little city.
Northfield has a lot of character with two colleges and so much history. Thanks for tagging along and see you next year in Wisconsin.
Really like your treadmill nut cleaner. I’m currently building a processor and I’m thinking about adding this into my machine. How well is this working for you? What angle are you at and what speed do you run the belt at?
Great Video.
Great video.
Great Video. What varieties do you recommend for central South Dakota?
You guys are nuts! 😂
"How many trees do you have?" "Five acres"
He probably meant that just simply calculate the commercial amount of trees per acre and you get a good estimate.
At 20’ apart with 20’ wide rows that’s around 109 per acre. At 16’ apart that’s 136.
I did this and held them down with T posts. Baby Cottontails will get through. Use 2' chicken wire on the bottom of the fencing if you want protection from them.
question for you sir. im going to be moving from Washington state to Missouri in 2 years and want nut trees. So should I start my trees in buckets and transplant them, when I move to get 2 years of growth, or just wait till I move? I want to grow acorns, walnuts, chestnuts, and paw paws. thank you
We keep all our fruit and nut trees fenched just like you do until they are big enough to 'defend themselves'. At that point we corral groups of hazels with soft heavy deer fence. The wire cages are reusable of course. Cheers!
I'm still picking it's a job picking by myself so far have 2 minral tubs full of wild hazelnuts
Look at that rich prairie soil, some of the best in the world. Hazels are looking great.
Lookin good Double J, love the tunes with the video, bumper crops for sure!
my hazelnuts are really close to being ready to pick will be looking for your updates talk to you later
yes the hazelnuts here in Purman county Missouri are really close to harvest I need to find a buyer
Wt is the max temperature in ur place
good stuff! beautiful trees you've seen. Maybe you've read "the overstory" by Richard Powers. trees are amazing.
No tubes, no fencing? Do you use deer odor spray? Ah there's the tubes! What kind of tubes? What brand, what type? thanks. three foot tall? Vented?
I use the plantra tubes, they are vented and engineered for the purpose, they allow airflow and good light penetration. They do require a little bit of maintenance, and you must monitor them because if grass or a weed starts growing in the tree tube it puts the grass or weed on steroids since it is the perfect growing climate.
@@IANutGrowers OK I actually called Plantra since their office is just south of the Twin Cities - but they don't allow pick up of orders. haha. I was trying to save on shipping cost. So I found TreePro tubes on craig's list - only $1 for like 40 tubes - $1 each. I'll compare the sunlight difference. Yeah I'm sure Plantra tubes are a bit more translucent - maybe since they're more corrugated?
@@IANutGrowers I wonder if these tree tubes will stop 13-lined squirrel damage? I saw one in the field. haha. I don't want to have to buy hardware cloth for all the trees. If the tubes will work well enough then that would save a ton of $.
that looks like 5 foot spacing in the row?
Rabbit damage! wow - I'm gonna put up fencing.
what was your row spacing for Hazelnut seedling planting? 5 feet or 8 feet? etc. thanks. I'm planting Northern MN so sounds like tree tubes should be require to survive the cold winter for the first few years at least - I wonder if the 5 foot tree tubes would work for these bushes?!
Hi, spacing in the test plots is 10 ft between plants and 15 ft between rows, however a production setting would have a much tighter spacing, perhaps 3-4 ft between plants and 10 ft between rows. The tree tubes are good for me in the early year or two, I purchase the Plantra 5 ft tubes and cut them in half.
@@IANutGrowers thanks! Yesterday I just got 30 inch tree tubes so should be perfect! I do have woods to the east of me though - so I'm concerned it won't be enough sunlight in the Fall for the seedlings - the sun is lower as I am in northern Minnesota. hmmm.
Wow I'm glad I'm planting North to South rows! northern Minnesota
Perfect!
nice work Double J, getting the next gen of H seedlings going. We did out grand traverse and the beast 2 years ago, and they are moving along.
well done Jeff, beautiful and bountiful place!
Many thanks!
Good to see! It's looking like it'll be a good harvest in Ontario, Canada as well this year.
What kind of plants are you growing? Any of the Grimo material?
@@IANutGrowers yes, mostly Grimo material. A mixture of some of their cultivars as well as seedlings. Do you have any of their genetics in your orchard?
Yes, we have Marion, Andrew, Aldara, Frank, Northern Blais, and are waiting on a few of the Dawns and Kiara
Jeff you rock dude- thanks for the recap, I didn't make it this year to the conference, but am gonna try my darndest to get there next yr.
It will be in Syracuse New York in 2024, be there or be square!
great variety! awesome place. Camera man is a wild man very fun
I bought some trees from Tom in 2005! They are doing wonderful in Vermont!
A really beautiful planting! Bummer about the rain, hopefully it passed over and you were able to go back out...if not, good thing you got there early! Impressive growth on the plants, wish I had some of those Iowa soils...things don't grow very fast or very well on my glacial outwash sand dune.
Maybe unroll with curve down instead of up? The grass would hold it. That's how I did it.
How do you roast them with shells on please
We only roast the kernels after they have been shelled, 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes
it´s very interesting the process, if you asking me, i didn't know how they could harvest the nuts
Thanks for the positive feedback, it has taken lots of trial and error to figure out what works.
Do you have any of the Dee type?
Very informative, thank you for posting these videos!
Glad it was helpful!
I need to find a buyer to buy my husked nuts
it takes me about a week to harvest my bushes I have around 250 bushes here in Unionville Missouri
Hi, there. Very interesting video, even more interesting presentation and subject matter. To me, at least it is very interesting. I'll explain: I live in a mountainous area and in my spare time devote that time to the recovery of an isolated valley. It is presently completely overgrown with heather, broom and other hard (and dry) shrubs, traversed by an almost rectilinear but only mildly incised stream. It is my intent to install some Beaver Dam Analogues (a.k.a. BDA's) to raise the phreatic water table and plant ripariam trees such as willows and alders. In the surrounding 'upland' I have oak trees to be planted after clearing the shrubs. As I want to mix understorey plants with the oaks, alder buckthorn and hazel are the main options, here. My searching though the internet and youtube lead me to this video... Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with others!
Sounds like a cool project.....and lots of work! That is why I love working with trees and shrubs, it is satisfying work to remove invasive or undesirable species and then plant those species I want. Mountains are something we don't have here in Iowa 🙂 pretty flat in the "prairie pothole region" check out some of the other videos and stay tuned for more.
I got my bushes from the Missouri Conservation Nursey
