Dessalator D100 membrane replacement - make fresh water out of salt water!
Просмотров 3277 месяцев назад
My Lagoon 450F came with a Dessalator D100 watermaker. I had not had the opportunity to use it for the 6 years I have owned the boat - it is always easy to access clean and fresh water in the United States. While cruising however fresh water becomes more difficult. This video shows the major steps to replacing the filters and membranes in the watermaker. We have successfully made hundreds of ga...

Emerald Sea Introduction - Transition from house to boat life
No mention of _parlay revival_ ? If it wasn't for Colin, this video wouldn't exist. A lot of people owe him at least a beer.
rough as guts !! you haven't fibre glassed it to give more strength .... don't listen to Lagoon they will tell/sell/give you anything ......... watch David Shih and Parlay Revival on how to do it properly
How many man hours did it take to make the repair.
Awesome video! Love the music!
Yah - I try to synchronize music. This one we finally got tired of editing and published as-is!!!
Loved the video and commentary!
Since you are our only regular watcher, and have way more experience than us, thank you!
At this moment, anchored at Punta Mita ready to sail south. Yes we would like to meet up at some point (just watched your most recent video actually!!). We have some autopilot issues, but hoping we can make it to Chiapas (most southern point of Mexico) and then slowly work our way north. We MUST coordinate! We miss Twitchell!
Very cool! We will be in the Sea of Cortez for the rest of the year so we will make it happen! 😸
@svrambleon For the next 3 weeks or so we will be in Chipias (currently in Huatulco) and will start slowly heading back north (eventually going back home forever the winter as some of my Raymarine seems to be dying and needs replacement). Will be very excited about meeting up with you - we have to have a little Owl Harbor Reunion for Devery!!!
Hey guys! Where are you now (January 2024)? We're in the Sea of Cortez near La Paz. Would love to hook up with you again. Jeni & Rich on SV Ramble On
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
isnt that spinnaker ? not a head sail ?
Tomato, tomata. We're not fancy folks. 😉
It’s all in the eye of the beholder! It IS ahead of all of the other sails after all! But yes, officially an asymmetrical spinnaker…. Looking at the wind over the next leg, it is going to get used a lot more….
One sheet of 3/4" plywood oughta' do it. I would ask who "engineered" this but I suspect that's a lofty term to use for what actually happened.
Bulkheads can be repaired and watched closely but the bonding of dissimilar materials is a bigger issue. Flex without cracks is hard to achieve in boats.
Why bother doing such a shody repair job, but at least people now know not to touch hull #304 with a barge pole.
Looks like like a sticking plaster repair, rather than a real resolution of the issues.
I couldn't really see the point of this video, its all over the shop, sorry I think other RUclipsrs have set a very high standard for explaining the problem, showing it to us, planning how to repair it, doing the real repair and showing us the result
If you have damaged bulkheads as shown above the boat has to be releveled to remove ALL DEFORMATION before the kit is even unpacked. Lagoon should supply the measurements so that the vessel is dimensionally accurate, and signed off before the repair starts.
The repair kit is a joke
A sticky plaster on a design flaw. Don’t touch a lagoon if you want to cross oceans. Keep it the lagoon!!
Mass produced, light and fast, corners cut.
In what world does a manufacture say a warranty or assistance for a manufacturing defect is void because the boat was motored 30 degrees off of true wind for a while? I'd only buy these boats at an extreme discount. If they don't need repair now, they will eventually.
Wow, I didn't realize the extent of the poor manufacturing. Between bulk heads and failing escape hatches it's getting hard to justify the catamaran advantage. Thanks for the video, very through.
The kit is to fix the bulkheads. Parlay found many other areas of separation like under the cockpit. Have you checked all those. I feel really sorry for all the Lagoon owners out there. And to add insult to injury, brokers are still happily recommending these boats to buyers.
Yea nope
the lagoon saga is not just cracked bulkheads it is also the glue for the bulkheads to hull and decks with no tabbing that breaks free from the hull and unless all bulkheads are tabbed to the hull they will still twist and move - love to hear some audio when under sail from below decks (Aka Sailing Zingaro on a 50ft Lagoon with the new owner in denial) and also if any doors or cupboards gaps are moving under way - As per Parlay and David Shih were the decks levelled before the repair or does the boat now have a built in bend - the acca dacca song "dirty deeds done dirt cheap" comes to mind - good luck I really hope this has fixed this problem but ???
I do not want to be unkind but that does not look like a coherent repair. I understand the approach not to get the boat for full access (Parlay and Shiah approach) but that repair just fits where it hits.
agree what about the glue separating in the hulls / bilges and decks - love to hear the sound of the boat in the cabins underway and any changes in the gaps on doors and cupboards - parlay and davids boats are squeak free - yt vlog Barefoot Doctors are getting a cat built in Dubai that will only flex 3/8" over the 52 feet length in very rough seas
No one wants to touch these boats after hearing about the faulty bulk heads - it’s very sad.
When a Manufacturer makes the glue holding 1 inch trim stronger than the bulkheads 😂😂!!
Do you think a heavier hammer and a block would have broken the glue faster. That’s how Colin and David open up those trim pieces and they slammed the heck out of theirs
That looked too easy compared to Parlay and Dauntless !
the kit doesn't address that the the hull and deck to bulkhead glue is also broken as none of them are tabbed - this fix doesn't get to the hull / deck and bilges where the glue is also broken
Now I see what got done. Seems solid.
Loved the video! The bulk heads look very strong! We can’t wait to see you in Mexico with us. 👍🏻
Great video!
wouldn't it have been easier to use a fine saw and cut through the glue bond?(removing any screws first)
Sad. That flimsy plywood is supposed to support the weight. These boats are way overpriced. Buyer beware.
Typically doesn't a factory recall mean the manufacturer makes the repairs? In your following video you receive a repair kit that you are installing. Not much of a recall.
I send the French/Lagoon a repair bill or send this defective boat to a Lagoon dealer to fix. If they refuse, LAWSUIT TIME. 20% of the 1100 450's made are defective. That's BULL!! This devalued your boat $100,000. I'll bet you have crack's every where. Good luck.
Fix it with wood and glue what a joke.
Why are they paying someone to do this for you guys? People all over the place are doing this themselves how is this now a customer problem to fix
Refuse to repair and get a judgment. Class action!!
Oh boy another 450 with broken bulkheads! Who would have guessed. They really screwed the design on these and I feel bad for all the owners impacted. As others have pointed out check out Colin’s Parlay Revival RUclips channel he repaired his on his own with no kit from lagoon which I feel his repair is going to be better in the long run. Sailing Dauntless is also repairing their 450 as well even with the Lagoon kit even though theirs hasn’t broken yet. They claimed over tightening the rigging on these is the cause and that could be part of the problem but based on what is unfolding I would suspect this is more of design flaw. Good luck with the fix!
@@Blortt5000 thank you for the detailed response that all makes perfect sense I hope people will see it and help understand the total big picture and what really needs to happen to fix these 450’s for the long term.
Lagoon tried to put the blame on over-tightening the rigging for us too, but eventually agreed to send the repair kit. We felt the kit was pretty good so used that set of instructions along with a boat yard with excellent skills!
Oof! That’s a big project! If Rich and I can do what we’ve done to our boat, you two can definitely do this! We’ll be watching!
Parley revival dear chap, better than Benttoe
I will never buy a Lagoon now. Don't trust them. Either poor engineering or poor quality control. Anyway, who wants to be stuck with a major repair that could occur at the worst time and location.
😕 քʀօʍօֆʍ
Thanks for sharing, great impression on what to keep an eye out when getting a Lagoon Second Hand, and what might be involved.
What a joke. You pay over $1 million for a boat and the build quality is subpar. Then the builder wants you to fix it yourself. I'm so happy I didn't buy a lagoon
And all because a boat owner ( chief engineer) found the defect on his 450. The company hasn’t been great to Colin. I wouldn’t touch those boats.
Binge watch Parlay Revival for how they did it.............. enjoy
think this will be 10% of the fix that you need to do on the boat, still need a lot of fiber and plywood.
Ya, there is nothing there to fix the plywood upright bulkheads. Thinking this kit is to replace the pieces that can't be bought local.
Well at least there are a ton of YT videos on stripping out and repairing Lagoon 450 bulkheads...This is the first one of the repair kits I've seen so this will be an interesting series. Do you plan on setting the boat on pylons similar to Parlay?
The repair is done and video uploading as I write this - it was very difficult to find a marina in the San Francisco Bay that had a wide enough boat lift to haul us out, so this was an “in water” repair….
Hope your using some epoxy glass ???
Good luck! Lagoon should send a Rep..
