*From Quantum Causal Models to Causal AI at Spotify*
Ciarán loved Lego.
Fascinated by the endless possibilities offered by the blocks, he once asked his parents what he could do as an adult to keep building with them.
The answer: engineering.
As he delved deeper into engineering, Ciarán noticed that its rules relied on a deeper structure. This realization inspired him to pursue quantum physics, which eventually brought him face-to-face with fundamental questions about causality.
Today, Ciarán blends his deep understanding of physics and quantum causal models with applied work at Spotify, solving complex problems in innovative ways.

Very good!
I think this is the best interview of the series. Would appreciate more interviews with seasoned scientists like Stephen!
Thank you for your time to put this interview together! At 12:34, a crucial question is discussed in regards to if causal analysis without interventional/experimental data is defensible/reliably actionable in real-world settings, e.g. for industry problems. For the two examples mentioned (a news magazine and the ABB study), which causal inference methods were applied specifically? Are these case studies available online? I was not able to guess from Stefan's explanation whether there was a observational study being applied or not to either. Thanks!
Hi @JakobZeitler Very good questions! As far as I know, the details of these projects were not publicly available at the time of recording. Regarding the methodology, I think asking Stefan directly would be the best. You can find his contact information in the description. I hope this helps!
Great to hear a leader crediting his team over and over. I relate Stefan's call to "simplify how we explain Causal ML" to the Bob Coecke's work with Quantum Computing in Pictures, he was able to (effectively) teach it to 15 year olds, and more than half of them passed (what used to be) post doc exams. There aren't bad students, just bad teachers. It's a teacher's job to find ways to make the complicated, simple.
😍😍😍 thanks for this!
Thanks for a great interview!
Thank you!
😅😅😅😅
Great one 😅😅😅😊
A statistic you'll remember forever. Makes writing a book worth it :)
Convo only got slightly interesting at end
Thanks for sharing Sorry to hear that you found it not engaging. Which topics would you like to hear more about in the future @DistortedV12 ?
@@CausalPython Yeah, i thought you guys were going to talk about causal methods for* dynamical systems instead of more speculative high-level stuff, specifically: cyclic directed graphs, discovery/inference methods and their tradeoffs/generality etc. etc.

He is so insightful 😮
I very much agree 👋🏼
Scott is such a humble, hard-working guy and he has done a lot for causal inference. Most fields haven't even begun to tap into the methods he is describing and I think they have true innovative potential.
I very much agree. Scott is a blessing for the causal community and his story is incredibly inspiring.
Really great interview on many levels. I especially liked the singing of מלאכי השלום towards the end. Many great work and life lessons. Alex, you are a great interviewer and very creative making is all better from this sort of knowledge mining.
Thank you, @eyalkazin, appreciate it. I am glad you found it insightful. I love the quote from the episode you picked for your presentation ❤️
Great video. Love the content.
I love this style.
yes I know
Thank you 👍

The catch is that now AI will scrape that video and it will become part of AI's new reality.

Madness
Such an inspiring interview! I really loved the musical ending: what song was that? Also, who is the person mentioned by Judea who said that causality is ascientific, as you can follow the chain of causal links down to the big bang? Thanks!
Hi Carlo, I am glad you liked it! Thank you for sharing. The song is "Shalom Aleichem" -- a traditional 16th/17th century Jewish song that is traditionally sung on Shabbat evening. The person that called finding causes of effects the "cocktail party chatter" was Donald Rubin. Here's Alex Vasilescu's blog post that briefly discusses this story: www.aiacceleratorinstitute.com/causal-explanations-in-computer-graphics-computer-vision-and-machine-learning/
@@CausalPython thank you Aleksander for your reply!
Best episode ever!👍
Thank you so much for putting this together. May we finally put the LLM discussion to rest 🙏

An awesome interview, thanks!
I think you'll really like Ben Recht on the podcast. He's also interested in indidualized treatment effects (n of 1)
Thanks for the recommendation @DistortedV12 appreciate it!
Can you share a link to his profile/webpage?
I read scott's papers, I'm really excited about this episode!
Can you please share links to his papers?
Scott is an amazing guy!
Interesting interview.
Great conversation :)
Thank you for democratizing causality!
