This is beautiful 😍 i think im going to try to make a fish hat with this pattern 🤔
Thank you so much!!! I think a fish hat would work really well with this pattern!!! 😍
What if the head is larger than normal? How much increase should I do?
It really depends on the head measurements - in general, you want the band portion to be about 1/2 inch smaller than the actual head measurement. But an easy way to make this in a larger size would be to just add 4 extra rows of single crochet rib on the band portion, which should add about an inch! That's basically a size up. :) Hope that helps!
@@craftykittycrochet4270thank you.
Hi can I please ask a favour I live in Australia and I think the ply of the yarn is different here. From the video it looks like 8 ply but that didn’t work so bought 10 ply which seems so much thicker. Can you measure from the cuff to the end of the repeat rows of the pattern. I repeated it just once and it already looks long enough to be slouchy at the back. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for reaching out! I would recommend going with the amount of rows that gives you the right measurement with the yarn you're using, regardless of how many rows are stated in the pattern. Since you're using a slightly different yarn, it could affect the size compared to the yarn I used/how many rows I did. Hope that helps!
As there is no measurement stated could you please give me the measurement from the start of the pattern to your row 27. Thank you so much for responding it’s a cute pattern that my daughter is going to love 😀
@@LeilaStJ Oh sorry, I thought you were referring to the cuff when you were asking about measurements! Since the hat including the fin measures about 11 inches in length total, you'd probably want to make sure that your hat up to Rnd 27 measures about 9.5 inches or so. The fin doesn't add too much length! If it's not exactly 9.5 inches at that point, it should still be fine - as long as it's not too drastic, adding or reducing the length of the hat a bit only makes it slightly more/less slouchy. It's the width you really want to be exact since that determines how the hat will fit on the head! Oh that's awesome, so glad you're enjoying it and hope your daughter loves it!!! 😍
@@craftykittycrochet4270 Thank you for responding but as there are no measurements given could you please measure from the start of the pattern to row 27 which will give me a better indication of whether I have reached the right length or not. Thank you.
@@LeilaStJ Sure, the length from the start of the pattern to Row 27 should be about 9 - 10 inches ☺ Although it's ok if it's a little off as this will only make the hat more/less slouchy. Hope that helps!
It just boggles my mind that music is being played while teaching a tutorial. So many do it. If they were in a classroom teaching, would music be olayed. Music is not necessary. It looks like an easy pattern, but too distracting
Hi Lorraine, sorry to hear the music is distracting for you. It was a big trend to have music overlaying the video at the time I recorded this, and I haven't had a chance to release a new version. If you'd still like to try the pattern, you should be able to mute the audio and turn on captions/subtitles to follow along. Hope that helps 🙂
Beautiful😍✨
Thank you so much!!!! 😍😍😍
Will this fit a child or just adults?
Hi, thanks for asking! The pattern in this video is for teens/adults, but I do have a version that's just for kids sizing, too. The stitches are all the same, just the stitch counts are different, so you could still use this video for reference. Here's the link! www.craftykittycrochet.com/2018/11/23/mermaid-slouchy-hat-crochet-pattern-kids-edition/
Hello, I absolutely love it, but I need this blanket to be less hole-y. Is there a way to fill the space between the petals, to it can be actually used as a blanket without disrupting the beautiful flower?
Hi, thank you so much! That's a great question - the easiest way to do it is probably to make a separate square backing for each square using regular single or double crochet. You could also do a fabric backing too. I'm still working on a way to crochet in between the petals without changing the look of the square! Hope that helps! :)
@@craftykittycrochet4270 you were lightning quick with your reply! 😀 Thank you very much 💕
@@nellynkaqt9467 Aww thanks hehe! I'm glad I could help!!! ^_^

Thank you so much!!!! ^_^
Love this
Thank you so much!! Glad to hear it ^_^
Excelente trabajo. Felicitaciones 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💕
Muchas gracias!!!! ^_^
any tips on how to switch to a different color?
Yes!! I always pull my new color through the last part of a stitch. So when you're down to 2 loops on the hook during a single crochet - that's when I'd pull the new color through. If you're changing colors on the "scales" part of this pattern if might be easier to do it on a single crochet than on one of the scales. Hope that all makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions!! ^_^
I followed instructions but i can’t fit 12 petals but 11…and don’t what I’m doing wrong..any clues?
Hi, thanks for reaching out! My first thought would be to check that the number of stitches on the previous round is correct...if you come up short on the number of stitches on that round, it could be why there isn't enough space for all 12 petals on the next round! Let me know :)
When I stretch my ribbing section it’s way longer than 21 inches. It’s closer to 25. Should I reduce my rows?
Great job measuring before you went on to the body of the hat! Yes, if it's more than 21 inches when thoroughly stretched, I'd say take out enough rows to get it to 21 inches. Thanks for reaching out! ~ Melissa
I now have seven rows of croc stitches completed but I’m really confused about when to go on to row 7. Can you help please?
@@mulefa480 So if you have 7 rounds of croc stitches completed, it sounds like you might already be well into the repeat that makes up Rnds 7 - 26! Rnds 2 - 5 make 2 croc rounds and Rnd 6 lays the foundation for another round of them. If you already have 7 croc rnds, I estimate you're actually on probably Rnd 15, which means you just need to keep repeating what you've been doing until you have 12 croc rounds. Does that make sense? Let me know! Thanks!
@@craftykittycrochet4270 I’m still confused because round 7 looks like a reduction round. Does it even matter? If I have enough height in the hat can I go on to round 7 the reduction round? Can I add more height? Does it need to be exact? As long as I finish with a row of croc stitches?
@@mulefa480 So when I look for Rnd 7 in the video, at 16:40 it's "repeat Rnds 3 - 6 five more times" - so that would be all your croc rounds, and the decrease round happens at Rnd 28. But like you said, it actually doesn't have to be exact to that, you can make as many croc rnds as you're happy with, make one of the dc rounds on top of your last croc rnd, and then start decreasing!
Is there a way to have no gab between the flower and the boarder?
I haven't found a way to do it directly on the square, but I have attached another plain crochet square to the back and it gives a nice effect! You could also do that with fabric. If you use a smaller hook, it will affect the size of the square but you might also notice that the gap becomes smaller. Hope that helps!
I’m super excited that I found this! I love anything to do with mermaids! I’m working one up in red and green for Christmas! Red cuff, green for the body and fins of the beanie then I’ll make one in purple sparkly yarn! 🥰🧜🏻♀️
That's awesome, I'm so glad to hear it! The Christmas one sounds adorable! I love these beanies in purple too, it feels so mermaid-ish ^_^ Thanks so much!!
Ok, so I’m making a sunflower bag. I was really struggling to find big enough petals for my bag because the circle is so big, so it’s taken me forever to do this. I found your video, and I saw you doing an extra row before your petal, and it absolutely blew my mind! The rim helps make my petals look a little bigger so it fits my bag. So thank you!
Oh, I'm so happy to hear that!!! Thank you for sharing with me, it made my day! So glad it's working out just right for your bag. Happy Crocheting!!!!!!!
So sweet 🤩
Thanks so much!!
Thank you! Awesome pattern.
You are so welcome and thank you! So happy you like it!
Love those sunflowers, they look so real, I’m definitely going to make them, Great job and thank you for sharing
Why thank you, Maria! I am so happy to hear that!!! Thank YOU for using my pattern and watching my video :) I hope you love making your sunflowers!!! ~ Melissa
*tip* if you’re looking to make the petals more pointed after the single crochet at the top do a double crochet then follow with the triple crochets. It gave my petals a bit more of an angle to them.
Oh good tip!!! Thanks!!
What size is the square
Each square is about 10 inches square, or closer to 9 inches square when assembled into the blanket! Hope that helps :) The link to the full pattern is in the description!!!
What size of Hook do you used I want to make circular vest and I want to put the 🌻 on back
Thank you so much to reply to my
@@carmenalvarez5838 You're so welcome!!
@@carmenalvarez5838 That's a great idea, this would look awesome on a vest! I used an H hook. If you're putting it on a circular vest, you probably wouldn't need any of the "square" edging of the later rounds, too!
Exquisite!
Thank you so much!!!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much Mary!!!!!!!!!! I'm happy you like it!
I hate the music so much I can't watch this. It looks like exactly what I'm looking for and I appreciate that you took the time. But the music is so obnoxious I just can't.
Hi Susanne! Sorry to hear that the music is not for you. You might enjoy the video more if the sound was muted, perhaps! There's also a link to the written pattern (free on my blog) if you're interested in making this but do not prefer the video. Thank you! ~ Melissa
I appreciate that. I will give it a try. I am very much a mechanical learner and learn by watching. Maybe I can mute, read the pattern and watch and still learn. Thank you for your kindness.
@@susannedelisle944 Glad to hear it! I totally understand, visual learning is a big part of crochet in general, too. I hope maybe muting the video and following along in the pattern work out for you! This was one of my first videos and in the future I don't plan on using music (or at least lowering the volume) for a better experience!!! You are so welcome and thanks for your understanding! ~ Melissa
Gorgeous, thank you x
You are so welcome and thank YOU!
the music is too loud.
My apologies if the music is bothersome; this was my first crochet pattern tutorial video. Unfortunately, I'd have to re-upload it completely to edit the music out. Thanks for your patience!
I love your mermaid pattern! 🤗 I'm making these for my baby cousins. And I had a question on the video 6:10, if I still needed to make 71 single crochets , because there head size is a little different?
Hi Lilah! I'm so happy to hear you love the pattern and are making some of these hats for your baby cousins!!! So this tutorial is actually for the Teen/Adult size but I do offer a Kids version on my blog and Ravelry/Etsy - the way the croc sts are made is the same as this video, but the stitch counts are adjusted to fit an average 3-10 year old! If that's not small enough, please feel free to email me and I can try to come up with some adjusted sizing as well (craftykittycrochet@gmail.com) !!! Here's the link to the Kids version - thanks again!!! ~ Melissa www.craftykittycrochet.com/2018/11/23/mermaid-slouchy-hat-crochet-pattern-kids-edition/

Warum häkelt jeder nur 12 Blätter bei Sonnenblumen🌻 ?
The most balanced crocheted circle is best done by starting with 12 stitches and increasing by 12 each round in order to keep it perfectly round and flat. The 12 petals helps keep that flat and rounded balance in the project. The number 12 is also divisible by 4, which is necessary to turn the circle into a perfectly symmetrical square. Crocheters love perfect squares because they are the 100% easiest shapes to stitch together. So theoretically you could make one with more petals or fewer petals but that number would have to be divisible by 4. So that means when making a sunflower you'd have to choose between 8, 12, and 16 petals. With 8 petals, they would simply be too few and too big to still look like a sunflower. With 16 petals, they would be too small and too many to look like a sunflower. If you want more numerical options for petals, look up (or create your own!) Hexagonal or Octagonal granny "squares". With a hexagonal "squares" you'd need the number of petals divisible by 6. Likewise the octagonal "square" would need the number of petals to be divisible by 8. All while keeping the flower itself proportional. Hope this helps 🙂
Can you put the background music off
Hi Marina! Unfortunately, I'd have to upload another copy of the video if I removed the music, which I still might do at some point. I apologize if the music is distracting! This was one of my first RUclips videos and I've now learned that no one likes background music :) So my future videos will not have any! Thank you! ~ Melissa

Hi! I absolutely love the sunflower! I was wondering if there was any pattern or anyway to fill in the space between the border and the flower. I have found other videos where the sunflower is smaller, but I like the size and style of this one.
Hi Zoe! I'm so happy to hear you love my sunflower pattern! About the spaces between, they are a bit larger since this is a larger granny square! I'm not sure exactly how to go about crocheting between the spaces since I've never tried that, but if you'd prefer not to have any space there, the simplest way I can think of going about it would be to crochet a "back" piece for the square and sew it on perhaps? That would add some time to the project, but you wouldn't be able to see anything through the spaces, at least! Hope that helps!! ~ Melissa
Crafty Kitty Crochet Thats good advice! I just downloaded a sunflower throw pattern. If I share it with you do you think you could do a square so I have a visual? I’m not good at following a guide as I am watching and learning. Let me know because your videos are so helpful!!

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing this amazing work! I have a silly question... I’m left-handed. Can I do the same thing but with my left hand? I’ve never done this before! I don’t want to make things more difficult than they need to be, so... is it better just learning with the right hand and getting used to it?
Thank you so much Elena!! You are so welcome and I really appreciate your kind compliments! That's a really good question actually, not silly at all! If you're left handed, then I would recommend trying with your left hand first. I know some folks who are left handed who taught themselves how to crochet right handed, but in general I think it's a bit more difficult than just trying with the left! I'm right handed and have tried teaching myself to crochet left handed and it feels very weird lol!!! There are lots of great tutorials for left handed crocheters out there too, that might help and give more info. I hope that helps!! Thanks again!
