Another very good informative video!! Now i know the continental has the correct distributor
Your videos will be handy when I'm doing my tef 20
That's the idea! Hopefully they'll help!
You have inspired me…. I have brought an upright exhaust (having converted from the low slung exhaust!!!) from Old 20 and it looks brand new black. Im going to rub it down and dirty it up. Like you did on your new grill. Soon as i get a monent i will post a walkround of my tef20 for you to see. I havent forgotton.
That's a real beauty Your right the points when the get pitted will tend to arc on contact and weld themselves to death Ps that's a bad habit starting the tractor with the clutch not pressed especially the 20 because they can be in gear and look like neural I've had a bad experience with mine
@@gearsandtears7643 yeah I kind of knew it was time to change them! She won't start unless the high-low gear lever is in neutral! But I get ya, always best to be sitting on it.
Just out of curiosity how did you put the grace into the steering box as i opened my own and it seems to hve air and thats all in it.
@@ilovetractors40 there's a bung on the box. It's facing the gear stick. And 11/16 or 18mm spanner will open it.
@dazsden do you put much greace in or fill it?
@ilovetractors40 you can suck out the oil that's in there and fill it with grease. As the steering is turned the level will drop so put plenty in.
@@dazsden i don't have to worry about sucking any oil out unfortunately as there is no oil in it. I have a slight feeling that there may be a hole in the metal plate between the steering box and the transmission
@ilovetractors40 yeah that does happen! I replaced my steering box with a better one as my original one was fairly badly corroded. Best thing to do is take it off and check it out. You could always patch up any holes with JB Weld, especially of you opt to just put grease in it.
grazie 👍
Give you a call during the week
Goes into negative earth on a 12 v negative earth burns Earth out
Underslung exhaust all I can see as an advantage is low trees in an orchard or loader work in an old cattle shed (I'm sure you have cleaned out a cattle shed with a fork ) a 20 would have been Handy 😂
@@gearsandtears7643 I did indeed. I've cleaned out calf sheds with about 3 foot deep of straw and dung! The vertical exhaust is the most practical option but I have very little work for these, only carting around a bit of stone and that. The home place has land and horses so the 20 at home has the vertical exhaust on it. But it's nice to have the option for the underslung too.
Your tractor's are a credit to you Darren
You that's in Ireland and I'm sure you have come up against the challenge of getting a log book for a 20/anything vintage
@@gearsandtears7643 just spent months getting one for that 35 and it had no serial number plate! Hardship! Got one for the Gold Belly last year too and that took a good bit of work too.
@@dazsden if a 20 has no badge is there anyway to find its cereal no. Early 1955 according to the engine
mine when recovered… had an underslung exhaust whilst it sat in a field for 20yrs. I think this is what saved it from being water damaged. The water could not get in. I adapted it to an overhead exhaust and prefer this. I can see what the engine is doing by looking at the smoke and it looks like the traditional tractor that i remember when i was young.
Ferguson 20 deisel for sure
I'd like a tvo for the choice of fuel factor having everything diesel
@@gearsandtears7643 yeah I get ya! They have a bit of character too. And there's way less parts in and on the engine. 10 cylinder head studs in the tvo. 26 in the diesel!
@dazsden I've played around with the tvo my uncle had a couple of them and a few around I got them running sweet
@gearsandtears7643 fuel and spark! They're not that fussy! That Gold Belly is live drive and the hydraulics are, as you say, far better than the 20. It can also lift a lit more weight!
Have you done much wiring on the 35 or 20? How's your understanding of regulators? Th 35 and 20 here don't charge and both have original Dynamo /regulators I see a full wiring loom for a 35 but no lights circuit and I want to rig up the lights properly on my dad's 35 positive earth tractor
@@gearsandtears7643 yeah I understand the wiring and have stripped and got dynamos, starters and regs working. The best thing to do is to give me a buzz when you're going at it. I've wired up a good few yokes over the years! I've stripped and adjusted regs too.
@dazsden I might take you up on that one Brakes came today for the 35 back plates shoes installed and I've one side stripped The cross shaft was a pig to get apart
@gearsandtears7643 yeah they can be hard going! Cool, add me on FB Darren Mac Uidheas and I'll fire you on my number.
can you do a film on wheels and tyres for the TEF20. If you know anything about tyre makes? Im looking at the Goodyear ones from Agriline. (Diamond sides). I like a big tyre on the rears. My fronts are 16 s. I notice some TEF20 have bigger rims and smaller tyres. What tyres do you prefer? Your opinion on tyres and rim sizes would be awesome.
I found that a lot of the aftermarket or new parts are just not of the quality of the original parts.
Yeah, very true! But we have to make do!
Quick question. For the tef20 what you you reckon be good oil pressure. We have one and when stated from cold its about 40. It drops to aproxamently 15 after 30 to 40 min and has a maximum of 55 once reved up to max. Is that alright
@@ilovetractors40 sounds perfect. You can always try thicker oil like 15w 40 universal mineral oil. Most put in SAE 30 mineral oil and that is thinner. But once she shows any oil pressure after a run when ticking over you won't have any problems.
@dazsden thank you
@ilovetractors40 no hassle! These have a pressure relief valve that opens at 60 psi pressure so that was the max pressure they were ever meant to have. But that goes down as the oil warms.
@@dazsden thats very intresting. i supose as the hours go up on the tractor that valve wouldnt be in use as often, would too much pressure damage the seels
@ilovetractors40 not exactly but it wouldn't help the likes of the rear crank seal!
Beautiful little tractor Dan I like the lower roll bar
The exhaust flap rattling away 😂
@dazsden ye if you add a little weight to the flap it might help or stick a bit of rubber where it touches the pipe
The mudguards have fingers on that one but my dads are original and smooth Is there different ones as standard?
@@gearsandtears7643 well spotted. Some of the aftermarket mudguards have them fingers on them. They wouldn't have been on the original ones. The 35X also gets longer mudguards and wider foot plates too. Those fingers are like the Dexta mudguards. Maybe they wanted to standardise production in the factory!
That exhaust is miles too long and I can't stand the mirror on the exhaust 😂
@@gearsandtears7643 yeah not a fan of the mirror. But he said he wanted one and I didn't want to go drilling bodywork. It's easy to take off anyway!
At 47.07 in your film. Your gearbox oil is draining and the colour can be seen. Mine is this colour after a good run. Is this a normal colour for the gearbox oil? I usually associate this with water in the oil. Ive done two oil changes and ran it today and when i looked in the fill hole with a torch my oil was this same colour.
@@MetamorphicWonders this is a tractor I worked on for about months and the oil turns that milky brown colour when water mixes with it. A certain amount of condensation is unavoidable, especially considering the gearbox does get warm after a bit of driving and when it cools condensation will form on the inside. Water also get in under the draft control spring on the lift top cover where the trinangular metal plates rust away.
That tornado in the background… is it a massive storm?? Sounds like a massive storm!!
@@MetamorphicWonders Storm Darragh. It was a powerful one. I had to put a palet up against the shed door and push the 35 upn against it. No damage done apart from electricity wires.
Interesting film. I am going to make a walkround film of my TEF20 1956. I will point out all the “issues” with it and would be greatfull for any advice. I will tag you into the film when ive done it. I will try and go over the entire unit and film all the gremlins. Overall mine is running perfectly mechanically and is an oily rag restoration. I think the tracking is out. I have that issue with burning a burning wire on activation of the ki gas but have noted your previous coments on maybe a faulty heater. I think the steering rod is bent. … all good stuff, but let me make the film and upload it and we will see what transpires. Great videos on your channel. Wish we were closer (im in South London) id have visited you for a T.
@@MetamorphicWonders I enjoy your videos and you managed to get a real nice example. You're also very lucky with the engine. It sounds exactly as thru should sound! You can tag or mention me/my channel no problem. I can then upload a reply video to you on my channel to help answer any questions.
Yeah. I will try the Bepco ones and see how it goes. Cheers
@@niallrg3708 I use Pat O'Gormon in Wexford and some online places like Vintage Tractor Spares in Longford.
👍 will try them
Great channel 👍 Keep it up. Where do you get your parts from?currently doing inner hub seals on a super dexta and want to buy quality seals but will need other bits too as its a winter project and will be a working tractor. Thanks
@@niallrg3708 I have fitted some axle seals in the past and they leaked again. I find the BEPCO ones are the best. Are you in Ireland?
No 35 built in 1954 😮
I know! That's not the plate for it. It's for the Ferguson 20. I was just using it to see where the new plate would look best!
A quick one for ya, where do you mount the horn hooter on the 35?
@@michaelshiggins3879 you'd have to download the workshop manual for the MF 35 and see. Queensland Tractor Parts have one on their website that's free. I know they used to put them on the left hand side of the timing cover on the Grey Gold FE35 and earlier T20s but that place might not be very suitable on a 3 cylinder 35 engine.
@@dazsden thanks for that I'll have a look for that.
Smashing tractor If you're up around Kildare on your Christmas break call out to castledermot for a cuppa I'm on holiday from college till January
This is actually the first year ever I will be staying in Galway! The daughter will be turning 1 on Xmas Eve and she hates the car seat so not putting her through a 3.5 hour drive home! But I must touch base the next time I'm home!
I enjoy your videos.I have a 20 diesal that has a. Frost plug blown I have tried everything to fit a new one but can not get it started in hole it’s a round disc any ideas. Thanks
@@owenlinnane2170 make sure that the casting in the cylinder head where the plug goes in is cleaned up. A lot of them get a build up of rust. You will see that there's a rim machined around the hole for the plug. Flakes of rust build up here and stop the plug fitting well. Give that a go. Scrape it well with a metal pick and find a wire wheel for a drill or a dremel to clean it up. Hope that helps.
At 10.19 the spanner with the point at one end… thats an Anderson Air Raid shelter spanner. It could be a “snail” brand, i have a number of them, the point end was so you can line up the panels before the bolt is inserted. I also have the shelter!! ruclips.net/video/CuzBz4J-5JE/видео.htmlsi=8FJrgRRreB1ok3mI (3.45 mins into my film)
@@MetamorphicWonders thanks for letting me know what it is. Very interesting!!
nice set of tools. I have a lot of them scattered about in the workshop , you have made a nice display. I may well do a display myself now.
looking good, I found a company called Welham Diesel that sell the parts for these pumps. I think i was lucky, I managed to strip and rebuild mine with no issues. It was siezed up completely. I did replace the big spring. Heres a link to my pump if you would like a look …. ruclips.net/video/Fz2auPoJzjI/видео.htmlsi=ynE8BnnuqxYUtSi5
Ah brilliant dan it was Nice to actually find a common theory Theres nothing else controlling how that diagram is getting pulled .. one thing i would of done is measure that spring and stretch it a bit at a time till it's longer im going to do the same on mine now after seeing how that small amount made such a difference I didn't realize the handle was as complicated as that i thought it was a straight shaft with a pin to catch the dogs That one looks cast where it engages so impossible to make I wanted to try start mine with a handle on second thought maybe not 80 euro worth of metal
@@gearsandtears7643 I think they end up costing 80 euro posted. And the metal in them isn't great. Mine wore a good bit where it goes into the pulley. Yeah that would be the only other thing I could do - give it a bit of a stretch.
Quick question dan Where can i get a starting handle or would you do a video on measuring the one you have so i can make one
@@gearsandtears7643 of course I will. I will throw it into the next video!
John Connaty in Kells sells them. Check their website or give them a call! Apart from that the original ones are very hard to find!
@@dazsden thank you dan
maybe disconnect the air filter and let it suck in just air rather than via the oil wash?
Did that too! I will try a spare governor spring next in the hope it's a little stronger!
got one the same…. my problem is when i activate the ki gas heater the wiring heats up and smokes and starts to melt!! Brand new regulator and a brand new loom. Cant understand it… all earths clean as well.
@@MetamorphicWonders a bad heater plug by the sounds of it. I fitted a new one and it did the same after a few uses. The brass solder connecting the element to the main shaft bringing power in was dodgy.
ok. thats interesting. I just watched your ki gas video and saw you replied to me on that video four weeks ago!! (only just seen the reply, sorry about that). I didnt film the wires heating up so can not direct you to a film. But.. it did seem to work when i first changed it all with a new heater, even the amp meter dropped when i pulled the heater knob. Then suddenly no amp meter reading at all and a smoking wire. I will remove the heater plug and check it.
@MetamorphicWonders the wire could be too thin. You need a good thick wire to power the heater plug!
Governor spring is weak in the pump slide shaft My tef 20 oil pressure drops to zero when it's hot and I changed the oil filter strainer etc which helped but I think the oil I used was a bit thin Watching your videos makes me want to do a bit on mine I bought a few bits and pieces for it and my dad's 35 so I will be fitting them over the Christmas holiday
@@gearsandtears7643 yeah that spring gets weak in them all. I think I have a spare one. I will compare that one and fit it if it looks like it's a bit stronger. Always worth cleaning out the sump and strainer. It made a big difference on this one!
@dazsden I might buy an oil pump and a set of shells for mine if heavier oil doesn't work
@@gearsandtears7643 try 50 weight oil first!
Will the tractor be painting in the end or are ye keeping the that look?
@@ilovetractors40 it's not mine, I'm only working on it for a man. He just wants it reliable, starting and running well.

@@gearsandtears7643 it's a pity I didn't record a bit of the work done on my own 20 diesel. Spent years working on that! Thanks for the kind words!
@dazsden your welcome You are giving me ideas about my own 20 diesel and useful information such as date stamps and a way to clearly identify which model/year my machine is I have all the k gas system except the tank .. I'm assuming it's diesel in the tank ? @gearsandtears7643 I watched all of your videos on the 20. It sounds very good. I just put diesel in the tank. I have a question how do I take the other side with the spring apart?
I have a 1956 the same.. fitted everything for Ki Gas.. new heater and pipes and new wiring loom.. new regulator.. if i activate the Ki Gas , the wire going to the amp meter heats up and starts to melt!! any idea? (its on my channel if you would like to see it)
@@MetamorphicWonders yeah I watched all of your videos but don't remember seeing that happen. What's the name of the video and I will watch it again. If you turn on the heater plug, does the arrow in the ammeter move?
Input shaft I meant
Just wondering why didn’t you change the flywheel’s pilot bearing? That was an issue with my gray Fergy It was worn out from inside just for a fraction of millimeter and it didn’t hold the main shaft tightly. And that’s why I couldn’t engage and disengage the gear Sorry for my English and it’s just a suggestion of course but after changing that the clutch began to work properly I think it’s very weak point-the bearing is quite small for the pressure it carries out through years…the main shaft and the driven plate are not in line and it courses sticking, no full disengagement of the pressure plate and driven one Can’t explain any better but I think you’ve got the message
@@thebee2059 the pressure plate and pilot bearing were replaced not too long ago. It was just the clutch plate that needed replacing. The pilot bearing was perfect!!
