Welcome to my RUclips Channel! I'm a church music professional based just outside of Chicago, Illinois. I teach classes in Gospel music as an assistant professor of instruction in the department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University, Evanston. I'm originally from the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina, but prior to Chicago, I taught music at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio for 10 years. I'm a BMI-affiliated composer & arranger, choral workshop clinician & instrumentalist with 44 years of church music experience. I'm a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Tar Heels), where I studied music composition & theory. I also transcribe and arrange music for the Gospel Music Workshop of America, and through my publishing, Kent R. Brooks Music (BMI).

This performance on Nov. 24, 2024 was part of a culmination of a 3-day celebration of author, poet, and social thinker James Baldwin's 100th birthday. At Northwestern University, I am a member of the Black Arts Consortium (BAC), a group of faculty members championing the creation, display, and performances of Black artistic expression. The BAC asked me to assemble some of our students from all ...

This is a combination of two songs that I like a lot. The first is a southern gospel hymn composed by Ira Stanphill when he was inspired by a revival sermon entitled "Room At The Cross." He wrote the lyrics on a piece of scrap paper. Later, he found the lyrics, composed the music and published "There's Room At the Cross for You" I paired this song with African-American spiritual "Plenty Good Ro...

In this video, the choir is delivering a concert at my church, High Street United Methodist, where I serve as minister of music. Here we are performing a gospel classic "All In His Hands" by V. Michael McKay. Kudos to conductor, Valerie Banks, in addition to chapter minister of music, Elder Kevan B...

After class, a few of my students stuck around and wanted to sing this classic made popular by the late, great Thomas Whitfield, but written by Roscoe Corner. I taught it as I had performed it as a student at UNC-Chapel Hill back in the 80s. It's a favorite, and there has not been a semester when my students haven't asked for it. Enjoy!

Hello Maestro Kent. Congratulations on your new Assignment.. I enjoy your music. If I may ask will sing Psalm 117 for the FCBC Family. you are missed. I know you are busy, but will you be visiting Durham or performing here in the future? Sis. Little
That’s nice. First time hearing this song. Tommy Dorsey was really wonderful with his songs. For an upcoming black history program I’m going to sing this. Wish I could play this as well as you sir.
Hi Kent!!! Johnny Price and i have been looking for you! Lol! You played at our Wedding over 32 years ago and we are watching our video, just like it's our first time listening to you play so eloquently..😊 I read your biography and you are have achieved some marvelous accomplishments! Congratulations 🎉on Everything and I'm honored to say we got to experience your talents many years ago, and we are thankful to you for making our Wedding Memories so special.❤
Oh goodness! Sheila, it is so good to hear from you. I hate that I saw this only now, but for whatever reason, I didn't get an alert saying that I got a message from you. It's hard to believe that it has been 32 years since I played for your wedding. I do remember it being a beautiful, joyous day. Please give Johnny my best and drop me an email. I'll send you my number and we can talk and catch up. Much love!!!!
Hi Kent I pray all is well you look great hope you have a blessed holiday . So proud of you.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! Hannah, what an amazing surprise! I apologize for just seeing your response. The RUclips message alert isn't always reliable. Please reach out again so we can connect and catch up. Love you, cousin!
Beautiful. Majestic!!
Sister Jones!!!! What a wonderful surprise to read your kind comment! Arranging that worship medley was one of my favorite things I did during my time at First Calvary. I miss you all very much!

@@kentbrooks3227 yes sir, you're welcome.
Oh yes!! I put it all in His hands!! I would have been absolutely no good!!! I'm quite sure I would have been doing the Holy dance!! They sound awesome!!
Hello Kent, are you the composer of "Finally" sang by the Bethel Male Chorus?
Please forgive my tardiness responding to you. I wish I were the composer of this that amazing song. The composer is Jeffrey Parker. He wrote it for Kathy Taylor's 1988 album, "He's Worthy" (which most people know as "I Must Tell of the Goodness of the Lord"). Another early hit for Kathy from that same album was "Joy Cometh in the Morning" which I did a lot with the Bethel Male Chorus when I was in college. Kathy was a good friend to the group and would come visit us often during the summer. My friend Kendal Brown published a RUclips video of Kathy singing "Joy Cometh in the Morning" with us back in the day from a local gospel music TV show that used to air. Here's a RUclips link to original recorded version of "Finally." ruclips.net/video/AWNqtUZ4MnI/видео.html
@@kentbrooks3227 thank you for replying. I enjoy hearing you sing it in the video with Bethel, I want it try it as a sermonic solo. Your cording is awesome, we have a few similar techniques. I'm an organist in SC, I do a lot of vocal solos, so I'm always looking for different selections. Now I must say when I heard Bethel open their mouths, I was astonished by the harmony that I heard. I'm used to hearing the all males that sing in the same key, no rhythm, singing quartet music. Are any of the members still living that you know of?
@@kentbrooks3227 and to add, I did find "Joy Cometh", I like Kathy Taylor's version, but you all rocked it!!
@@OneWayDesigns I appreciate that. I would absolutely love to hear you play and sing! I love playing a Hammond B-3! There's absolutely NO other sound like it for Black church The first time I saw the Bethel Male Chorus, I was a freshman in college playing for another choir's anniversary. Bethel were invited guests. They came walking in wearing these burgundy, monastic robes. Like you, I was expecting to hear the usual male chorus quartet singing that was typical of my youth growing up in small town Oxford, NC. Then these brothers broke out on a Walter Hawkins jam! My mouth dropped! Little diid I know their pianist was leaving the group. Some months later, I heard a knock on my apartment door back in Chapel Hill. When I opened the door, three of Bethel's senior members were their extending an invitation for me to become their new pianist/arranger. After Leon (the director) passed away, I became the director. I was with them for almost 20 years. Because of them, I was introduced to gospel royalty over the years as we traveled nationwide. I wouldn't have a career or a ministry if it weren't for them. To answer your question, many of the guys have passed on, and the group stopped singing many years ago, although we did do a few reunions. I still keep in touch with the remaining members. They became family to me. By the way, you have an AMAZING channel! What a unique and creative way to connect with people and build community! Keep up the great work!
GREAT SONG AND GREAT JOB.
Thanks so much for visiting my channel. All the best to you!
Thank you for coming back home. The workshop was amazing👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I have not heard this beautiful song on radio why? if it's not on the stations; it should be playing on all networks!
Russell, I appreciate the sentiment. I did this song years ago with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and again with the Gospel Music Workshop of America. I also did it with my ensemble and at First Calvary before I moved away. Please feel free to teach it whenever you’d like. I also have sheet music available.

Hello Mastro Kent Beautiful !! Glad hear from you ☺️
I need IMANI at First UCC Springfield
Hey there, Rusty! It's good to hear from you. I'd love to bring the choir to First UCC again. Unfortunately, we're not allowed to have ensembles perform off campus because of COVID. This recording was from a class rehearsal last year. I'm looking forward to the day when we can have the students travel again.
AMAZING!!!
That's very kind of you, sweetheart! ❤️
At the end where it sings “Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart. And you'll never walk alone...” that’s the part that requires some serious concentration. This song is so special to me, I first heard it sung by Wintley Phipps. As a soprano, I struggle with that last line, and because I enjoy singing high, I have to remind myself to stay in chest voice until I’m reach to transition. I don’t know notes, but I have an ear and joy for music. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏾
I hope you are doing well and safe

Listening to your music as always it's beautiful. Q: are you alright? Just miss your smile.. Concerned
Hey there, Sis. Willie. I appreciate all your encouragement, and I miss all of you in North Carolina, too. And don't worry. I guess that expression was one of me concentrating on the sheet music, that's all. I was also thinking about what I was going to play that wasn't written on the page. All is well! 😊
You just took me back to Granville County with this one!! The last night of revival at Mountain Creek, with Mr. Sanford leading the congregation.
