    I was up in June, not in my RV7 this time, and took an air tour out of Talkeetna. It was an experience as epic and life-altering as that shown in Vic's video. Definitely pay attention to the ADS-B picture and self-announce as required. I flew with Talkeetna Air and as a retired DPE can report that I found no faults with the pilot's professional mountain flying. I recommend spending the extra bucks for landing on the glacier and landing at Talkeetna to spend a full day in that fabulous town.

    Boy that's a lot of water to fly over in a single engine. Most of us fly down cook inlet further before crossing. Also, Skilak is Ski-Lac. So interesting seeing this from a non-local perspective. The route you took would be very uncommon for a local.

    • @baselegaviation1614
      @baselegaviation1614 26 дней назад

      Thanks for the local color. I do ask for local information when we are there. in this case FSS recommended this route as the coastal route had low ceilings, and so we went IFR. I had flown this route many times on previous trips and was familiar with it. I hear you on the overwater section of the Cook Inlet, but that routing was not going to happen IFR. Plus, it seemed so little of an exposure after all of the other ground and isolated territory we had already covered.

    • @baselegaviation1614
      @baselegaviation1614 27 дней назад

      survival gear is an absolute requirement. we carry two weeks worth of food and shelter, along with a SPOT beacon. There are many stretches where we “joke” that if we were to go down we would be another Amelia Earhart story except no one would care. sometimes life is not without some risks. LOTS of maintenance was done on the aircraft prior to the trip with no expense spared.

    I installed an Electroair ignition in place of my right slick mag on my IO390. The right mag had the tach sensor so I have to use the Electroair tach signal from the control module. My left slick mag uses the slickStart and cannot have the tach sensor from the right installed due to the incompatibility with the slickStart system. So now when I perform a mag check I lose tack signal from my EIS and have to use my cable driven tach to check rpm drop. Not a huge issue since the cable driven is technically the primary instrument for RPM. Just wondering if your resistor method from the P-lead to the surefly module has an equivalent I could use to get a tach signal to my JPI 830 when the right EIS is off? I already mentioned to Electroair that it would have been helpful if they allowed the system to keep the tach signal active even when the Electroair was deactivated during the mag check. I use the Electroair mag switch which uses the individual rocker switches and push button from start. (Very convenient for preoiling engine).

    About to do this on my RV14A & I am now puzzled about bleeding the "master cylinders". I thought the process was to simply start at the caliper of each wheel, fill that line to the single firewall reservoir & only fill the reservoir slightly less than halfway. That leaves room to bleed the second brake. In the end with both lines filled & bled the reservoir should be about 2/3 to 7/8 full. I'm I on the right track..?

    A couple comments... The real reason helicopter pilots practice autorotations is because they're so much fun!!! A couple people commented about the amount of ground slide... Without knowing anything about this particular helicopter, I can call out two criticisms of that auto... First, it looks like he entered the flare going too fast... You can see how long he floated before touchdown. The other was the minimal flare. It really looked like he just leveled the aircraft rather than flare it. The result is exactly what you see here, a fairly fast touchdown and a long slide. Given that he was landing on a runway, not a huge deal, but off airport where things are often pretty rough, it increases the chances of tipping over. Someone asked about coming back on the stick after touchdown to decrease the slide. That's not a good idea, because as the rotor rpm decreases, blade flapping increases. Tilting the disk back at that point often causes you to chop off the tailboom. Generally you want to do your slowing down while you're in the air. Once you touch down, you don't generally want to move the stick forward or backwards...

    • @baselegaviation1614
      @baselegaviation1614 2 месяца назад

      I think I mentioned this but the POH (pilots operating handbook) calls for the autorotation to be performed with a 25 knot forward airspeed, rolling it into the runway, which is what I did. It looks faster on the video. Yes, on an unimproved surface the procedure is to flare and land with no forward speed, which is exactly what I do in fields.
