yes, a great act. saw them many times.
Still listening
Good stuff.
Austin was so nice at this time, miss those days so much
I fucking miss this shit... best years of my life watching Kimberly fuck shit up.
Awesome! I mean Mad Dog & Beans on 24th at Guadelupe. Even a performance at Libert Lunch. Its like watching a snippet of my youthful years in the ATX.
First saw the rivers at a party on the plaza Thursday in downtown Houston, maybe 1986 or 87. Had never heard of the band beforehand. The harmony between Kim and John was off the charts and it was an evening I'll never forget.
I was at UT Austin from 1984-1988 and discovered this awesome band through another student friend in 1986. I lost count of how many times I saw them in Austin and Houston, where I'm from. My good friend and I chatted with John Croslin during an intermission at one of their shows at Fitzgerald's in Houston. I have all their albums.
in Austin 84-87, saw them at the Beach and UT, regret didn't see them more, awesome band
love this...thanks for the memories...
These guys should have been bigger.
Love The Reivers- Zeitgeist! ❤️
A brilliant video and a great song. An interesting atmosphere is created here using simple means.
Such a great band! I saw them half a dozen times at Liberty Lunch back in the late 80s, once at a live radio broadcast on KLBJ FM and then their reunion at the Parish in 2008. Got to speak with them a couple times and they were always very personable. I still play their albums and a lot of the other bands that used to play with them like Last Straw, Doctor’s Mob, Glass Eye, Grains of Faith…so many. I think someone dubbed it the New Sincerity Movement in the Austin Chronicle. It was a pretty cool time. So miss the Austin of that era!
So thankful that this is still available. I remember seeing the original broadcast when MTV was about music. Thank you....
Saw them at Aquafest in Austin in 1987...
Is the album called Slow Sky because the airport code for San Luis Obispo is SLO?
Love , love , the Reivers. "Freight Train Rain" is amazing.
Holy Jesus Fuck this is amazing. And Daniel too!
Always be a classic track and band in my life. Course, it's 'The Reivers', not "There Reviers", but good live stuff.
Superb
Amazing singer and song!
My all-time favorites
If you are old enough to remember when MTV played music videos you might be old enough to remember Jim Crow laws.
I only know of this band from hearing a live show on KCRW in fall 1987. So that makes them special to me, in a strange way.
Dance dance dance dance
Sweet cameo by Daniel Johnston. RIP Mr. Johnston.
Jenny Homer!
Back in that magical slice of time, when 80s alternative bands were touring, they rarely came to where I lived. Ann Arbor and Detroit were my best bets, but, back in those days, it was tough to know when they'd be anywhere close. Thankfully, through news from a local indy record store, I got to see a number of great bands, but Zeitgeist/Reivers are at the absolute top of the "Regret I missed them" list. I did send them a fan letter back in the day and I got a response! I still have it.
they were fool people, REM used to go see them if they could!
This song was in my car cd player for years, 1990 I'm guessing?
I've been a fan of the Reivers for about 10 years now, but I never found this 4th record 'Pop Beloved'. Back in my hometown for a minute, I bought it blind in a huge stack. It was the first thing I put on for the drive home and now I've got a stack of twenty-something records I'm never gonna hear 'cause I can't get past track 5 on this damn disc. That bridge is preposterous- that bass is simply outrageous (the space! Listen to the rests!) That melody line is so rich it could buy the Cowboys *and* the Texans. Perhaps I wish Kim would have sang this one, but John laid down the performance of a career on this track. A masterclass in songwriting. It's been so long since I've played a song over and over like I'm 13 again, but every note of this was penned to push my buttons. I'm so grateful.
Why aren't these people superstars?
I see Kim is playing bass for this song & Cindy the violin. Was this common in their early days? When I saw them in Athens GA in '89 I think they all stuck with their main instrument.
Such a great song, trying to work out the chords. Chorus is Dmaj7 to A (A,Asus4,A, Asus2)..and trying to see/hear what's going on in the verse. Is it Dmaj7 A A F#m A F#m A A? That F#m I think I am seeing at the 36 second mark.
Hey guys, what about "vouyer", "city dreaming", "presence"(one of the best" -> masterpiece..)? Steve Baca, could you talk about 'them, please?
Reivers
This was filmed at the dramatic bridge over thr Rio Grande River near Taos. I believe Michael Stipe produced this vid.
Rock out!
Yesterday, I found a Reviers album and bought it.
Was that in Australia? If so, Wow!
I found it at a used record store in Ceterville, Delaware
I won a trivia contest at a club in SoCal. My prize was a Reivers LP. So grateful that I learned about this great band.
Zeitgeist/The Reivers were a really solid band...deserved bettah
this band was really good and sounds somehow modern/not so dated to my ears
I was at this show! I'm right in front of the stage somewhere.

Miss these days. Great song
What a great, great, great band.
I saw them many times at Liberty Lunch. I was sure that they were going to be Austin's version of R.E.M. I still can't believe that they didn't become a national hit. We were lucky to experience them We're lucky now to have recordings on the Internet. BTW Kimmy, I still have a crush on you!
Saw them about a hundred years ago in Columbia, Mo. I can't say anything other than they had an amazing sound and should have made it big.
I bought Translate Slowly from Shadowplay Records in Norman, OK before I could drive. Knew zero about them or their sound. That LP still sits in the limited collection I've kept across 3 decades, 3 countries, 6 jobs, 6 relationships, and 8 residences. So, yeah. Great post. I enjoy it a lot.
So many great memories of seeing this band in Austin as a teenager and early 20s. Amazing live shows.
RIP Daniel Johnston (local musician briefly introduced in middle of picnic in this video, showing his tape).
A true legend
