Wonderful instructions. Thanks for doing these. I've had my Elna Expressive 830 for a while and have only used it sporadically but purchased it with a specific project in mind. Can't wait to follow along with you and learn.
@alpacamomdotcom Thank you. You are exactly the kind of person I want to help. Hopefully, you will become good friends with your machine and get plenty of use out of it.
Great video thankyou.
I didn't break a needle, But I was pulling on the fabric this week
@Barbara-iz7bp There is a balance, and getting too helpful with lumps and stretching can cause problems.
Great info! I have a sort of thick flattish "fork" to put under the back of the foot. It was in the tool kit when I bought my sewing machine 😊 It works just like using many layers of fabric. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
@@TravellingTorunn Anything of an appropriate height can work. Even a packet of needles 🪡 😉
@SharynsSewingSchool that is very true 😊
There are things you don't need to learn from experience! Learn from my experience!
Please check out the playlist relating to this machine!
Hi Sharyn, I tried your suggestion and it worked for long enough to do my mending job but it keeps breaking. I'm using white but I swapped the spool in case and it's still happening. Any thoughts, please?
If it consistently breaking the lower looper thread at around the same distance, it is generally a threading issue. Unthread the machine completely and rethread from scratch, working from right to left. If it is breaking at random distances, you are looking at: 1. Lower looper tension being too tight for the thread, in which case changing the thread cones may sort it out. 2. Damage to the needles. If the left needle has damage it may cause a problem for the lower looper thread, if the right needle has damage it may cause a problem with the upper looper thread. 3. Damage to loopers. If the loopers get scratched the thread will catch on them. Sometimes you can feel the scratch with your fingernail. This will need a technician to sort out. They can sometimes brush out this sort of damage and sometimes the looper needs to be replaced. Hope this helps! 😃
U r great- calm- slow pace THNX million
@@SukhyDhillon Thank you 😊
I hope you feel more comfortable about loading designs onto your USB after watching this video. I learned how to make videos from my computer!
Putting foot back
@@katecourtney7358 did you need to know how to re attach a foot to the machine?
I absolutely love your instructive videos! You have taught me so much about my 550e machine! I would love it if you could do some on the M7😁🙏🙏
@maryannwomack532 Thank you. 😁 Whilst I really enjoyed using the M7, I don't have access to one at the moment. I am filming a CM17 now, and there will be some overlap with the M7.
Love this thank you!!!
These "fonts" are very useful!
Really great video and fantastic information ! Thank you!
@@papercents you are welcome.
Thank you. I have never made a good buttonhole on my Janome 5027 MyStyle. Thanks to you, I can now say I have.
@@kaydalby5125 I am very glad to hear that. The 5027 is a great manual machine. Cheers Sharyn
Hope you are getting lots of new information from the tutorials!
Without knowing how to put designs together you are really not getting the most out of your machine. I will be showing in a future video how to get designs onto the USB.
Thank you so much for this video! I wish I had searched for it half an hour ago, it has been a huge help
Glad to be of assistance!
Very informative, this is great. I'll be checking all those cotton threads I have been given just in case. Thanks heaps, your channel is great, you have a couple of machines I own. Thanks again from Melbourne
Glad I could help. The hand quilting threads are a real trap!
I always find it hard to get proper spacing under each other
@brendapp64 If you mean spacing between rows of letters, I can do a video on that! I arrange rows of text in the edit screen. Thanks
@ that would be great
Please remember this is NOT the thing to do on Air Threading machines. It may damage them.
Sharon thank you thank you thank you. I was struggling with the threads not making loops on my overlocker for hours yesterday and I watched your very very helpful video and voila this morning I did what you suggested with winding the wheel back a couple of stitches and oh my god it worked. I can't thank you enough. Have a wonderful day x
@solefertilityreflexology4529 glad you found the solution!
Thanks i used the edit screen and an awesome helpful video
@maxineiles6806 There are many fun things in the machines if you know where to look.
Awesome video!! Thank you so very much!!
@blueeyes4071 glad you liked it!
Thank you very good tips!
@@trinathrower8356 Thank you 😊
Hadn't thought about laying the machine down. 😂
These fonts really extend what you can do with your machine. Did you know they were there?
Hope a few Elna people find this!
Outstanding!!! again, I am learning more from your videos than anywhere else, thank you so much Sharon. Can I ask, is it possible to ADD different size hoops to these machines? if perhaps I wanted something in a larger square than the SQ20b.
@KeithLeggett-k6e Hi, the only hoops that your machine can operate are the ones in the hoop list in the edit screen. The limit is 20 cm wide because that is how much distance there is between the needle and the body of the machine. The only way to do bigger in Janome is to get an MC15000 or a CM17. The 15k will do 23 cm, and the CM17 will do 28 cm.
I love these videos, I am a visual learner. Thank you for taking the time to teach us.
Thank you for the comment. The Edit screen is one of the most important features of these machines. New video in about six hours!
Thank you so much for a thorough explanation and it was lovely to see how creative you got with the pin tucks! 😊
@@radhapwr there are so many fun things to play with on sewing machines.
Very glad people are getting value from this series. If you know anyone with a 400E, 500E or 550E, please share with them!
This has been awesome
@@maxineiles6806 Thank you.
Brilliant video! Thank you Sharyn, I really was considering throwing my overlocker out the window but thanks to your video I found that the switch had been set to 2 and I have been able to thread my machine correctly and love using it now. Very clear and valuable tutorial. I’ve saved it for easy access if I need to refer to it in future!
@NicoleMillar-p1h That switch is an absolute killer and so easy to overlook!
I'm learning more from watching your videos than anything else! Thank you
Hi Christine, I think this series of videos will be a pretty good resource for anyone who owns one of these machines. Cheers Sharyn
What other things are you interested in finding out about the 550E and siblings?
1 Formating an empty usb stick before downloading designs onto it. 2 Finding the total stitch count for the machine not just a design.
1. I showed formatting in the settings video. It is on page 2 of the common settings. 2. Having spoken to my technician... He wouldn't tell me! Where it is located, there are things that can be done that render your machine inoperable. 😉 Best to leave well enough alone. If you really want to know, ask your Technician to give it to you when they are servicing your machine.
@@SharynsSewingSchool Thanks Sharon. I wasn't overly interested in the stitch count, I just noticed a few "For Sale" ads with the sellers mentioning the stitch count and just wondered....
Thank you very much! This is the best video that I've found that demonstrates how to use this threader accessory. So helpful to know what needle and machine types it will work with. My new machine's "automatic" needle threader has defeated me, but I now feel confident that I can be successful with this tool. Heading off, now, to purchase one! 😀
@fiberjazz glad it helped. Is your new machine a Janome? I have experience with those threaders. Certainly, some have a trick to them.
@@SharynsSewingSchool Thank you, Sharon. I'm a fairly inexperienced sewist and could not justify the cost of a Janome (yet!), so went with an entry-level mechanical machine. That allows a larger budget for fabrics and notions so that I can get more projects under my belt. I'll be looking at the Janome models once I am more experienced and am in a position to upgrade. When searching for machines this time around, I found a few that I liked at a more affordable price point, but they were not available for purchase in the US. I suppose it has something to do with whether a given model is configured for the standard electrical current in, say, the UK vs the US. But one day, I'll have a machine with more capabilities. I especially would like a machine with a lock stitch, automatic cutter, and maybe a built-in laser pointer. One day. 😄
Thank you for sharing that. That is a clever idea to zigzag the blocks first, that way they don't move while you join them up. Thank you again. I am making a quilt as you go log cabin for a queen size bed.So this was very handy.I was very happy to find you on You Tube.😁
@carolinekalokerinos9352 Thank you, I have been concentrating on machine tutorials for a while, but I will be doing more QAYG soon.
That was a great tip. I have had these problems and now I can fix it. Very good to know about the importance of thread quality on the lower looper. Thank you 🎉😊
@@TravellingTorunn thank you!
I enjoyed this technique of sew as u go . I'm getting too old to sandwich & free motion quilt my Queen size quilts . Q: Design wall ... I noticed the tape is only horizontal , you need to tape vertical as well to cover the zig-zag stitch. What is your solution to avoid a thick cross-over ? 😊😊😊
@suzanneritchie7048 you are correct, I have completed the wall hanging now, and the vertical coverings are done too. Surprisingly, the crossovers don't get too thick. They are even less stiff if the squares are cut with just shy of half an inch, and the tape is made one inch. I try to avoid stiff fabric for the tape.
I have the 550E and I have read most of the manual and played with the screen. However, between this and your previous video, I have new insight into some of my settings and changed a few things. Thank you Sharon
@@KeithLeggett-k6e I am glad you have been using the settings. There are lots of people who never realise that they are there!
If you are in the USA let me know if your template has 14 squares in each direction.😃
I wonder what’s the difference between this 744D and the 644D machine?
@artjam259 hi there, the 644D is one of the ones I have, and I will do a series on it eventually. They are very similar except that the 744D has a "free arm." As a result, it is harder to clean and oil, and some of the levers and switches are a bit more complicated to get to.
This was so helpful! Thank you!
@@CandiceMyers-p3l happy to assist!
I’ve been having this problem for awhile now and it has caused so much frustration not understanding why this is happening. Thank you so much for posting this video!!
@@emilyperry521 glad to help.
No questions so far, just a big thank you! And thank you to Velma too :)
@@papercents I will let her know!
I am the Suzie who leant Sharyn the Janome 744D she used for this video. Every time I need to rethread my overlocker I always rewatch this video, because no matter how many times I am shown in person I still screw up the lower looper. I literally have my own personal threading tutorial!
@historical.isolde7918 so glad it is useful for you, Suzie. Once again, big thanks for letting me use your 744D!
Hope you do 1500 horizon I want to save my embroidery from using to the machine. Thanks for helping us all ❤
@maxineiles6806 yes, I will be doing the 15000. I have started a series on the embroidery only machines, and much of that will also be relevant to the combined machines.
Thank you for your video! I have a 550E and it truly is a beautiful stitching embroidering machine. Even the pros at the store couldn't tell the difference between a design stitched on the 550E or a much higher end machine. Still discovering all it can do and looking forward to you showing us more. Thank you! Happy stitching!
@papercents it is a great machine, and I think this will be a lengthy series.
I have only sewn your designs on my 550E but I think now I might try the inbuilt designs. Can the bobbin fill bobbins be used repeatedly or just the once? Regards, Christine
Hi Christine, Your 550e uses standard Janome bobbins. You can refill them from the bobbinfil reels as many times as you like. Janome used to have pre-filled bobbins with bobbinfil already on them. Once used, they are just normal bobbins! Cheers Sharyn
PS I would not try to re use the cardboard bobbins that are available. 😉
I like this new method . I do a lot of quilt as you go so I love this new method thank you
@judyallen6268 glad you like it!
