Unfortunately, I said goodbye to my Duo 1 a while ago. I still have my Duo 2. I didnt have issues with battery on either device at the time. The only hesitation I would have in using the Duo in 2024 would be the lack of OS updates. MS is still issuing the security updates for the Duo 2, but I do not believe they are doing so on the OG Duo. That being said, it's a fun device that still gets app store updates, so it could be useful, but not sure I would rely on it as a daily driver.

@@ReviewsforNerds interesting, I believe that even the duo1 is useful for me because I'm looking for a secondary device to consume media, Internet, read and edit some texts, I don't want a fold as a primary and most tablets have large screens that are impractical for easy transport access

sounds like your device might be locked. this method only works on unlocked devices. If you are following the steps I listed and it is not working, check on Thai Nguyen's github page and see if there is info there. If the device is network locked, I do not believe this will work.

from what I can remember I had no issues with the drivers and the phone ran decent for the age of the device. I would love to find a newer version of the OnePlus I could install linux on and try again.

it was annoying but kinda the norm back then. The idea was to get you on a carriers data plan. I remember when Alltel sold Blackberrys. There was no wifi, no camera, 3g speeds (maybe) and the plan for email and web was 80.00/month

For me it kinda is dead. Mostly due to time constraints in my life which prevent me from sitting down and tinkering. The discord channel is full steam ahead though from the looks of it. All channels are lit up with recent updates.

if you have watched the video and checked the charging port for bent pins, cleaned the ports on the dock and the switch (use something plastic or wood). then I would say try another dock.

unsure. You could search for Surface Duo stock rom. Microsoft has recovery options there which have always helped me.

You can download the recovery rom from Microsoft's website. From there you can follow instructions to refresh back to stock.

Great points and a good idea for future videos. I do not plan on hacking but using this for a portable MP3 player and to play snake have been pretty cool.

There is an update button in the specialized menu, but I was never able to get them to work. There are instructions on the github, but I followed @scaryifliteral 's videos to update.

While I do not have videos, Shane over at @scaryifliteral has videos on updating the Duo ROMS.

I am not sure why that would be the case. I never ran into that issue. Perhaps reflashing the rom or pulling the latest version down would help. I ended up going back to stock rom as I sold my SD1 to make room for another device.

Casing was 3d printed by @nza420. I now have a 3d printer and have printed another case. cost to print the case is almost nothing but time. Beepy with a Raspberry Pi is 80.00 I believe.

@@ReviewsforNerds Considering that this $80 machine runs Linux on a Pi Zero I can use it as a sequencer for my synths. Which is what I do now w/ my Pi Zero. Well, if it runs your average basic Linux distro (read: with ALSA and a command line interface), that is. The price is nice, but I have a sneakin' suspicion that shipping and VAT to Europe is gonna add considerably to the costs. But this is a really nice gadget. When/if they get back in stock I might buy me one. Thanks for the info! 🙂

I wouldn't wish too hard. I think the project has stalled and it wasnt very stable. My Duo2 (sadly the only one I have left) is back to factory.

To my knowledge it will run anything text based a raspberry pi could handle. There are people who are setting it up to run pumpkinOS which is a Palm pilot like software. I have tinkered with it just need to figure out how to install apps

You could add a USB DAC.

While some of that would depend on the network, I have had very little issues with calls (Mint Mobile). The only time I had an issue was in a notoriously bad reception area after a tornado.
