Lived their most of my life, then we moved to 1015 n pelham street That is where the school james k polk elementary was. I went to mount vernon elementary school when we lived on uhler terrace. my sister and daddy graduated at gw high school. Then we moved out to west springfield, i went to westspringfield high. Graduated 1978. I remember hot shoppes, dixie pig barbeque, so good. Buckaroo. I used to play at the del ray baptist church parking lot. I remember the canyon down by the masonic temple. Me and my friends used to bike ride down arlandria, and go to st ritas church, i remember presidential gardens apts. We used to get the bus there and would go home on the ab and w bus. We used to take alot of cabs my daddy knew everyone in alexandria. I remember .The cab drivers they would say uptown, downtown. Got married at christ church. Used to go to old town, remember the torpedo factory. Also who remembers s and w cafeteria at landmark shopping center. My parents ended up living at watergate and landmark in their retirement This is dixie from texas. My daddy was robert h fischman. They would call him bobby.
I am so proud to work for this organization!
We got to ride the U.S.S. Peoria (LST 1183) from Okinawa to Korea so we could hit the beach as part of Team Spirit '81. Great mess deck for the Marines.
Mosby came to get James Sherman who was visiting his parents at Ash Grove in Fairfax. James was notified and left for D.C. Mosby took the elder Sherman but later released him because of the request of the citizens. James was a part of what was to become the"secret service" guarding the President.
I did a few cruise's on LST 1188 USS Snelling; while with 10th MarRegt, seen USS Fairfax a few times.
Made a couple med cruises and a North Atlantic cruise aboard the USS GUADALCANAL from 1979 to 1983 and the Fairfax County or Barnstable County and lemor County and other LST'S out of little creek along with the LPD'S LSD'S on our trip above the artic circle we pulled into narvic Norway and king Olaf 5th came aboard as well as prince Andrew landed aboard in his helicopter, the British were training getting ready to sail to the Falkland Islands
When they demolished this sight, they used it to train disaster relief teams.
My dad was on the USS Frederick 1184., 1984-86, San Diego, CA
Good reading
Large Slow Target ...... was a detached hospital corpsman with Amtracs aboard the USS Sumter LST 1181....................
Always wanted to do a gator freighter
I grew up in annandale in the 1990s as a korean (attended annandale terrace elementry and poe middle). I remember the first time I shot a gun was at a run down gun range in an old house in annadale on the same parking lot as the giant on littleriver trnpk. Down stairs, there were lanes people brought their own guns and shoot paper targets. Back then the only korean grocery stores were lotte in Fairfax off rt50 and lucky world on loemanns plaza in falls church. There were korean businesses in annandale since before I lived there but it wasn't dominated by korean bussiness like it is now, Centerville was not koreantown like annandale was back then. In middle school, I would get picked up with other korean kids to go to kendo academy after school. The wife of the master was the driver. Annandale high school won 2 state championships back to back in the 1990s, so football was big back then. The Halloween parade was the best in the early 90s, they used to give out lots of gifts, I participated in it once as a boys scout. The first apartment I lived in was Fairmount gardens, it was a lot of crime going on there. Once in Wedgewood west, where we lived later a man pointed a pistol through the window at us kids. About 10 years ago I worked as a substitute teacher for fcps. Got a chance to see my old schools, demographics has changed. When I was a student, more than half the students were white and plenty of korean students. When I was a sub, I saw mostly Hispanics and almost no asian students in annandale terrace and nearby schools. When I tell newer nova residents Arlington used to be the hood, for instance Clarendon was "little saigon", roslyn was full of pawn shops and sketchy used car dealerships... they can hardly believe it. I think the annandale I knew growing up will also eventually turn into Loudon County with sterile cookie cutter businesses and homes.
Hooray for the NEWPORT Class. FAIRFAX COUNTY was good ship and served our Nation well.
Rangers lead the way.
Served on USS Tuscaloosa LST-1187. Best crew I ever served with.
Roll Tide !!!!
We went to Operation Desert Stroke on an LST and thanks to this video I now know what the bow is for (we never used it and even after all this time I really had no idea--AAV's came out the back like it was the Batcave--well, okay, it wasn't that dramatic).
U.S.S. CAYUGA (LST-1186). NOV/86 to DEC 90.
USS CAYUGA starred in the movie AIRPORT’77. Acted as the primary recovery ship for the Navy team trying to rescue survivors of a ditching.
Yeah thats true i,m from ANNAN IN DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY i looked into the old history of annan and saw several old photos of shop owners who soldup to emigratecto ANNANDALE we have a parade on the 1st saturday in july called RIDING OF THE MARCHES .
Annandale in Dumfries, Scotland is a lowlands town named after the valley and the river Annan that runs through it. King Robert the Bruce of Annandale. The Johnstones are the hereditary pipers of Annandale. My ancestors emigrated from the town from which their name comes from, Annandale, to England in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Their oldest son George Annandale emigrated to South Africa with the 1820 Settlers. He married a Boer woman, Johanna de Beer, and the descendants fought against the British in both Anglo-Boer Wars.
I served on board this ship as part of a Marine Corps detachment in the fall of 1976. We crossed the North Atlantic in some of the worst weather I have ever seen. The USS Kennedy lost an F14 when we got close to Scotland.
I saw this when it ran - it was so well produced! Songs are very clever and the actors sis amazing job. My wife and I still talk about it. Thanks for posting the video!
It has everything including the railway
I've been in Annandale since I was born in 1989, and I've watched it slowly change from the quiet town it was in the 90's to the Korea-town it is today.
Lord I wish we had more Mosleys ! Catch um with their pants down and those repeating rifles out of their reach We could have ended the whole horrible invasion of our lands in raids just like this ! Superb ! God Bless um and God love our Confederates ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻Thank you for brief video !
❤️❤️
1980-84. RM3 Blakeslee.
Good video not enough time to make all of the event. Col. Mosby also took a large amount of donkeys.President Lincoln said it best after how he could make generals but horses and mules are expensive
WASTED TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS... GOING DOWN POVERTY ROAD, IN A V8 FORD...
Jan 73 to Oct 75 the Fairfax was my home. For those who don't know LST also stands for large, slow, target.
Lol, was on a float to Vieagus PR on USS Ft. Snelling (LST 1188) and we were in a bad storm. The ship was rolling all over the place! Luckily I didn't get sea sick but alot of my fellow Cannoncocker's did....
Excellent little video. I love the history of the Civil War. I've studied since I was about 9 years old I am now 59. Thank you for the lesson.
Great video… very informative
Very interesting. She is truly a great and captivating storyteller. I enjoyed listening to her give them history of such a mundane place.
I served as the Weapons Engineer on HMAS Manoora - in its next life in Australia.!
I know it had been a year but I served on a sister ship. What happened that they were scrapped early ? You fixed all the bad parts of the ship The awful bow ramp and the engine controls !
I grew up watching a Mosby TV show, and I just saw a 1963 Disney movie about the Fairfax Courtyard raid,
The Gray Ghost Mosby's Rangers
@@aubreymoates582 Thanks! At one time I reenacted as 2nd KY Cavalry CSA in CA. Had a lot of fun and gained much respect for CW soldering.
Yes those were the days when Disney had shows that were good to watch when Walt was running the place. Not like today where Disney insults you and you kids.
MY GREAT AUNT FLORENCE ❤️
There should be a film of Mosbys life ! What a great story! I’ve read his memoirs twice over and could read them again!!
I was in the Marine Corps from '87-'93. I lived on this ship for six months during a Med float in '88.
Hey, I was in the Corps from '88 to '93. I was aboard the Coral Sea in '89, in the Med.
@@tommyzDad Semper Fi
The Iwo Jima (LPH-2) was making the rounds about the same time; we would upgrade later to the USS Nassau (LHA-4) to party some more: Better, stronger, faster.
Same here during the mid 80's had the pleasure of being on board her three times 2 for a Med Floats and also for a exercise down in Puerto Rico, I enjoyed that boat !!! Nothing more fun than being in middle of the ocean with 30 ft + swells in a flat bottom in the middle of the Atlantic ocean !
@@MichaelSmith-kr9qw Yep! When we hit rough seas, it rolled so much I thought it might tip over. lol
A beautiful history of the place we call home--No place like home!
The story of this community seems really interesting. I've read about it the "The New Yorker" article that talks about it and West Ford
I got a few rides on that ship
Is that the real Martha washingston
No, it’s a recreation
My favorite story of the brave sons of the south !
As a child living in Benidorm Spain, I was lucky enough to go on board with my parents….I would love to know what year this was….my father who sadly passed asked a sailor for a hat which he gave me but unfortunately I lost it.
Benidorm is the time we went for a swim drunk and fully-clothed, then walked around soaking wet, probably to go get drunk again.
Wow, this was cool! I was an EM3. Then, I made E5 shortly after I was transferred to commission the USS Spruance in 1975. I served on the Fairfax County from 1973 to 1975.
The only thing historic for me about Annandale is the bitter depression I felt living there.
i love your videos and i love how you probably youtubed annandale to shit on this video
Bro what about the korean bbq
Lol .. it was kinda depressing for me to. But I have some good memories there back down Americana Dr and heritage shopping center used to have a dollar movie theater along with being AAA State Football Champions back in 91 and 92 back to back .. Which is pretty impressive cuz it's small
Mosby has been a hero of mine since I was a kid. I was looking for a used car a few years ago when I spotted a 2003 Grand Marquis. It was gray and the first thought in my mind was: this is my Gray Ghost. The front plate on the car is of his Divisional Flag.
