Atari VCS Space Invaders on a C64! - Preview 3
Welcome to my third preview of Atari VCS Space Invaders on a C64. A conversion of the classic Atari console game.
The Atari VCS version of Space Invaders is probably the most famous conversion in the world - as it has been dubbed in recent years the first ever 'killer app'.
The cartridge sold millions of copies for Atari and even though it wasn't like the arcade game, it was the favourite of many who played and bought it.
This may seem like a straight-forward conversion to the Commdoore 64, but it isn't as easy as it appears and it's going to take some clever coding to get it looking like the VCS. The C64 has a limited colour palette compared to the Atari and it is also hampered by how close...

Tiki Project - New C64 game - Preview 2
Military experts are baffled, as the once-termed "Invaders from Space" have gone into what appears to be a permanent holding pattern. Two sentry vehicles have been deployed to the scene with an "observe only" directive. Residents are advised *not* to discharge firearms into the sky, as they might inadvertently start an interstellar war. Always erring on the side of caution, the military is working fervently on creating three static shields, possibly consisting of custom-made groups of hires characters. While shots from either side can and will chip away bits of these shields, they will afford us some protection in likely conflict to come.
Great idea!
Nice work!
Wow! It’s looking brilliant, no way did I didn’t think you were doing 112 variations! Amazing, you never do anything by half do you?! Personally I’d get it up and running and get it out, most people won’t notice the 112 variations. It’s going to be an Atari VCS Invaders Emulator!
Thanks. Yes, the plan in my head was to do all 112 variations of the game. I don't think there's much point in putting it out without them. Once I've got all the basic mechanics of the game up and running, it should be quite easy to do them all. But it's all just designed to look like the original, none of it behind the scenes is the same at all and it is quite different - it's just quite subtle.. and to notice the differences you've probably got to have played the original game thousands of times over.
Wow, you've improved this game so much, I half expect it to sprout wings and fly off into the sunset. Hats off to you-this is next-level amazing! Looking forward seeing more on your up coming projects.
Thanks, yes - the game has improved quite a lot over the last few months. I'm still optimising it and reworking things to find more room for additions, so there's likely another release before Christmas Caper 2 makes an appearance in the future.
Well done Robert, very interesting to see how the game has evolved. It still looks great on ver.2! I do appreciate your mention of VCS invaders in the video and I apologise for pestering you! All the best mate.
I had a look at the code for VCS Invaders this morning out of interest. I will probably have to re-write it from scratch to add in the new sprite multiplexor routine, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I think there will still be mostly sprites on-screen for the approach I will take, the bullets may have to be software sprites though, especially if there are two players on-screen and the famous Easter Egg double-bullet bug is being used in addition. Should be a fun project and I wlil base it on my Javascript version I wrote a few years ago. Thanks.
@ oh brilliant! Do you think it would look good with top and bottom borders opened up?
@@anthonybarker3483 I already do that for the score area and the UFO. The limiters for the tank are in the bottom border.
Love the updated look. I've always played this on real C64 hardware and it's one of the few games in which I prefer using the joystick button for jump. I've not actually played this updated version yet, I just hope I don't get the ice cubes confused with the round freeze ones! Great update all round though.
It's personal preference on up to jump or fire to jump. I tend to like up as I'm used to it in games like Rainbow Islands, Bubble Bobble etc.. but as long as it works well for you that's the main thing. I hope you enjoy the updated version. I fixed one of the issues I spotted with the Elves in this video first thing this morning. So, there will be a Release 4.4 in the future - but not for a while I would think. Thanks again.
Absolutely loving the look of this game. Amazing effort & really showcases what the C64 was capable of.
Thanks. I think there's always something new you can do with the C64 even after 40 years.
@@rwxdesigns Yes, it remains an amazing machine.
Ahhh, its looking great. Nice one
Thank you sir!
A very nice looking up date. Still my favourite C64 Christmas game. What are the square ice blocks for?
Thanks. The ice blocks are decorative for the moment, but I had planned to use them as another type of obstacle. Whether they will appear in a future update of this version of the game, or I hold them back for Christmas Caper 2, I've not decided as of yet.
this is really nice
Thanks Colin.. I think it's safe to say, it's probably the best the game has ever looked.
Very nice!
Thank you. Looking forward to more Turrican from you.
@@rwxdesigns just completed the side project that I'll send as entry at MSXdev, so I'll resume Turrican project soon 😸
Wow absolutely amazing! You are a genius mate. Now please get on with Atari VCS Invaders please!
Thanks. I will try and get VCS Invaders progressed this year.
Nice stuff! Do you code on a C64 or use an IDE?
Thanks. I cross-develop on a PC, I use Sublime and KickAssembler for coding and WinVICE for testing, then run the game on an Ultimate 64e and real C64s.
super cool lovely gfx and sound , great too see!!!
Thanks - a few more additions coming in the next release.
Looking Good!!!
Thank you sir!
This looks so good, it deserves a physical release either on Cassette or Cartridge. I hope Psytronik or TFW8b are watching
Thank you, although not sure why your comment has not appeared on the channel, so I missed it originally.
Yay! Love the gfx and also the palette you use, reds look red, not brownish.
Thanks - colour palettes are always different between models of C64, differences in VIC chips and components on the board skewed them slightly. I just went with what was closest to one of my C64s.
@@rwxdesigns the same here, it is very close to what I see when I use my c64c
looks great
Thanks. The game shouldn't be too far away.. look out for more updates!
about time you gave us an update lol. Love the graphics, fantastic. cant wait for it :)
Thanks.. I know, I'm slacking on those updates! LMAO! 🤣 Once I've eliminated the bugs I'm chasing, it should be near enough ready.
Interesting
This continues to impress, Dude. Looks glorious!
Thanks.. it should only get better once all the basics are included.
@rwxdesigns Looks cracking.
Not only you're obviously a very skilled coder but your skills as a graphician are just super impressive. There's obviously an incredible number of hours spent on this game and sharing with us all these subtle details is really super appreciated ! Thank you so much and keep up doing this super incredible stuff !!!!!
Thank you for the comments. Glad you like the video. Rest assured, there will be a lot more videos to come on this project.
Coming on fantastic! Loving the graphics and the ship looks awesome. Adding the ship inertia makes a huge difference to the overall feel of being in space. I also hope things will explode spectacularly when time comes to code the shooting! Looking forward to this.
Thanks Matt. I do like the hovering effect, but I think it definitely needs to be controllable via an option, so people can decide whether to use it or not. As for explosions, I've got a few ideas - but I think I can make them look quite nice too given the colour palette I'm using.
Love seeing the progress, especially the attention to detail; Looks almost like an early Amiga/ Atari ST game!
Thank you. I always like to see if I can make the graphics look more like you are playing on a different machine to the C64, or that the C64 has had some sort of upgrade. Looking forward to designing the other themed levels in the game and sharing once they are ready.
Looking good! Love the deceleration of the plasma balls before they fizzle out. It's a mechanic you don't often see in C64 games.
Hi, thanks. I did it because I figured eventually, as energy of the plasma depletes, so should its velocity - if that makes sense or not. I will add in the collision routines soon to make the effect look even better. Also didn't realise you had a channel on here, so subbed you now. Thanks again.
@@rwxdesigns Thanks for the sub! Yes, small world... :) Look forward to seeing many more Cyberdroid videos!
Looking very awesome indeed x
Thank you Eleanor.
Ooooh, I like this - how the heack-a-mundo have you got so many hi-res stuffs going on..?
Thanks - it uses a simple sprite multiplexor to get the extra sprites on-screen. It was my first one, so it's quite basic, but works okay. I will improve on this when I get around to writing Christmas Caper 2, but that's not for some time.
rws I love this type of walk through tech explainer video. So nice to learn about different ideas and choices in the design process.
Thanks - glad you like these type of videos. Look out for more of them in the near future.
bloody hell, this looks great. Nice work, its looking polished already.
Cheers.. lots more to add in the coming weeks and months.
What happens if you fire when the ship is facing towards the player?
Nothing bad.. at the start of the game pressing fire will launch the ship, but you won't be able to fire any bullets when facing the player.
Looks great.
thank you kindly.
oh awesomeness
thank you friend. hope you are well!
very awsome so far. - keep it going on!!
Thank you. I will keep going!
I loved those mid sprites you added for the ship's rotation, the spin looks really smooth. I also like that at the beginning of the game, the ship is in front view. The details in the backgrounds like little blinking lights create a nice atmosphere in the game. Congratulations on the work!
Thanks for the comments. Glad you like the changes I've introduced.
This looks fantastic. Hopefully it will get a great background track too, one of the things that made both Cybernoids great!
@Asphodellife I have a tune for the title screen of the game worked out. There may be multiple in-game tunes though for the different levels.
@@rwxdesigns Great! This seems to shape up to become a true 'AAA' title ! 😃
Love it :)
Excellent!! I love how it's turning out!!
Thank you. I'm pleased with how it is progressing.
I appreciate seeing the great work you’ve done and learning the history about Cybernoid as well! I was 12-13 when that game came out and I have to say how jealous I am to learn the programmers were only a few years older than me. ( not that my skills were anywhere near theirs! ) Thank you and good luck in continuing your work!
Thanks, you're welcome. I think I was a similar age to some of the developers, but my coding wasn't at the level of Nick Jones back then. I understand more now, hopefully, I will be able to produce a good game by the end of it.
Great video, Robert, really quite interesting hearing your thoughts and process and referencing and future ideas. Top work!
Thanks, it's progressing quite well. Since this video I've added the code to move through all the screens in the level, which interestingly didn't take that long to do.
Looking very very good. Please keep it up !
Hope it turns out to be not as difficult as Cybernoid is to play 😉
Even though I finished Cybernoid and Cybernoid 2, I don't think I would write a game I could not finish myself, so it won't be overly difficult.
@@rwxdesigns I tried, but I can't imagine that someone really finishes this chaotic mess of a game :)
Yes, this looks cool.
Thank you kind sir.. I'm looking forward to getting more done on this.
Is there no end to this guys talent!? 🙂
Kind of you to say.. I think once I get some more routines into place and a few screens chained together, then I will be able to see if it's going to be a good enough Cybernoid clone. I'm hoping so.
@rwxdesigns hope so, keep up the great work for the old c64! 👍
Wow that's beautiful graphics game preview, i'll wait the release, thank you!
Thanks. It won't be for a while, but keep watching out for more updates.
Another day another game eh? 😄love those hires-overlay sprites! hopefully with 2mb cartridges on the horizon, hi-res and ECM etc will become more frequent.
The main ship is only 2 sprites, so not much of an overhead. The remaining 6 sprites are to be multiplexed for enemies and pickups. This game is using multicolour mode and not EBCM, for a change. 😉
Looks promising!!!
Thank you. It has potential I think.
Nice one !. Came via the link you posted with regards using the sine wave for jump movement. Many thanks :)
I hope it helped.
