… We are very fortunate in Australia to have an abundance of sunlight and a reasonably mild climate. We took on the indoor-outdoor style of renovation and building through sheer practicality, rather than making any references to mid-century modern design. Though, having said that, back in the 1970s, we had some fabulous “project home” developers, such as Pettit & Sevitt, and Habitat (Michael Dysart), which were based on the themes of the mid-century house: natural exposed beams, flat or gently tilted rooves, walls of glass and big glass sliding doors to the outside, elegant simplicity without “fussy architectural decoration”. Pettit & Sevitt homes included an outdoor patio space connected to the kitchen/family area that was made with cedar uprights and beams and covered in green soft insect screen above and all around instead of solid walls, with bark & wire baskets of hanging g ferns hooked to the beams - this defeated the efforts of our infamous Aussie mozzies for enjoying the outdoor spaces and breezes! Just fabulous spaces. Michael Dysart tried to never cut down a tree, so some of his Habitat houses had thick tree trunks/branches protruding through walls and exiting out the ceilings! My boyfriend and I used to visit these exhibition villages some weekends just to hang out in those spaces.

The reason why Eichler style homes were an extreme minority in acceptance it that even though the man is paying for the home, the woman has the ultimate decision of which home; and the vast majority of women want their homes to be doll house, not like an Eikler.

As an Architect who lives in a MCM home, I can very much vouch for the appreciation of space, air, and light that we benefit from with this home style. I think people will [if not already] have begun the process of critically examining the spaces they spend so much time in. I am always excited to connect with clients who have decided for themselves that their built spaces need to be better and are interested in connecting with designers to help infuse great design principles (many pulled from MCM era design) into their existing homes. I am also a big fan of Eichler designs including many of John's renovation works. Great highlight!

Its futile to correct someone when it is evident the other person simply doesn't have an understanding of the profession of landscape architecture.

What a fabulous interview! These two are excellent benefactors of this home! I hope to stay there at some point. Being from MI, having traveled extensively, being a life-long mid-century AND FLW fan, I was totally pleased that they unfolded their surprise about Michigan's (historical) design prominence, the natural beauty of our state, and the insightful discussion of their home, the restoration, the future project, etc. BTW, I also often tell people that MI could become "Little Scandinavia" if we embraced some higher ideas than we currently do...Maybe I meant to say, "Little Netherlands!" In my travels I had come to notice how delightful design and urban planning are there! I would be so proud for MI to continue to be relevant in design, sustainability, living in harmony with nature, etc.) Best of luck on the next house, and though they are not permanent residents, Welcome to Michigan!
