Ask long time residents, we will tell you it is nothing like it use to be, there is no community anymore, it's nothing more than a relative of Avalon just like Jay always wanted it. After nearly 40 years of living on the island, I moved over the bridge to Somers Point and love it, and now that Wonderland is gone, expect more traffic and parking nightmares when they tear it down and put up a condo monstrosity.

Spent Summers on Park Place from 1964-2006. Tom Oves (passed away Feb. 2022) used to rent his bikes from The Delaware Hotel parking lot (until he opened his own "hamburger stand" on the 4th St. beachfront.) At night he would chain the bikes then cover them with old awnings. He also ran the Snack Bar and gave Swimming Lessons at The Delaware. Old Bdwlk. at 4th St. had 2 "hamburger stands"-"The Sun Spot" (North side) & "The Tiki" (South side.) "Oves" was WAAAAYY at the back of the beach. (When they moved the bdwlk. back, it's now right on the Bdwlk.) Larzalere"s was the first store from Park Pl. Ah yes, the penny candy. You would get a little plastic bowl (they were assorted colors) and walk down the counter and fill with your favorite "Penny Candies" (Bazooka Bubble Gum, Tootsie Rolls, Mary Janes, BB Batts, Red Hot Dollars, Dots, etc.) On the right side (in front of the windows) were shelves with the "small" beach toys that were "roped off" and not allowed to be sold on Sunday due to "The Blue Laws" (repealed in 1986 well after Larzalere's was torn down.) Johnson's Ice Cream at Brighton Pl. & Bdwlk where ice cream cones were served in "Sugar Cones" with a "Sour Ball" at the bottom. I remember seeing movies at all 4 theaters. Saw many Disney movies at "The Surf", "The Sting" was at "The Strand", "The Poseidon Adventure" at "The Moorlyn" and "Jaws" played at "The Village." I learned to Swim at "Flanders" pool. Many more memories for another day.

Our family had a parking lot and snack bar on eighth and boardwalk in 1976. We painted it red white and blue and honor of the bicentennial. Ocean City is a wonderful town growing up in Ocean City was special but a bit different of an experience from just taking a vacation there, we had to work hard in the summer and the winter . The place was a ghost town.

Ocean City gets most of their tourists from the metropolitan Philadelphia area and it’s funny when you watched the news from Philadelphia a major city of I think the metro area has like eight 10 million people. They pay an awful lot attention to the Jersey shore and area that has a population of about 60,000. It’s like that little sliver of land on the Cape May. Peninsula gets more attention in some of the bigger metropolitan areas in the city.

I remember when it would get snow in Ocean City it would be so weird to see snow on the beach and people that I know that would come there just for some vacations would freak out when I would show them pictures of it. Snowing in Ocean City and Ocean City.

When you lived in Ocean City and it had a population of about 12,000 it was different than people say that just come down there in the summer or take a vacation much different experience. We had a great high school great teachers, but I just remember it being a very desolate place I mean, think about it hundred thousand in the summer 12,000 in the winter blocks and blocks of empty houses. You can go on the boardwalk and start a bonfire. Nobody would see you, remember that wind blowing off the Atlantic in December and January it go right through you but like I said there were two seasons summer when you lived there you were real busy because everybody had a job and everybody worked like crazy to make money so then when the winter came, you could survive on the money you made in the summer

There was always a big push to try to temper the blue laws of Ocean City, which really restricted what you could sell and do on Sundays some of the merchants on the boardwalk managed to get city castle to look at reversing some of them, but there was a big department store in downtown. Ocean City called Stans. Mr. Staton was a short little man that could move awful fast, when this was coming about, he put a full page in the Ocean City Sun Sentinel and in big letters he said Mr. Staton says no Sunday sales and that was the end of that. I understand by the mid 80s they changed it, but Mr. state was probably gone by then.

Bob’s Grill was owned by a gentleman named Bob hardball. He got a little trouble back in the 70s because if you wanted to work there, you need to send a picture of yourself and course he would only hire the prettiest girls he could get a hold of I think there was a discrimination lawsuit, processed against them all. Remember that you paid a lot of money for a very small cup of Coke.

Funny thing is when I bring people like my wife to Ocean City. They don’t get it. They see overpriced, hotels, motel rooms with bad electric and air conditioning but if you grew up going there, it was more of a connection and more of something you were really looked forward to, it was the memories of your childhood that may going there so special even with diminished facilities but when we live there, you could get a nice house for about $40,000. Everything’s in the millions now and they’ve priced it out for people that actually want to live there.

Ocean City was my home. It’s where I grew up learn how to ride a bike. It was a great city to grow up in lots of churches you had two seasons in Ocean City summer and the rest of the year summer you were busy trying to make money so you could survive the rest of the year, that will what life was like living in a resort like Ocean City had really good schools. You had a lot of vacant buildings paying property tax school. Teachers would line up to get a job at Ocean City high school they paid the best.

Sand, surf, families, and pretty women: good times! Who else recalls AM radio from that time period, featuring Yankee Maid hot dogs, Copper Kettle Fudge, and Captain Starn's restaurant? Meanwhile, down in Sea Isle City, there was a hearse with a sign that read, "The Captain Chum Is Alive!"

2 of these commercial jingles I remember vividly + 2 others. "The good treats from the happy kitchen of (clap clap) Yankee Maid." "For the best in fudge, you be the judge, try Copper Kettle Fudge..." "If you've got a passion for fashion, and you've got a craving for saving, take the wheel of your automobile, and swing on down to Ideal" (Ideal woman's clothing store in Hammonton.) And "Fralinger's Original Salt Water Taffy, on the boardwalk in Atlantic City over 80 years, salt water taffy is a treat, for old or young it can't be beat..."

Thank you for sharing this. I stumbled over it looking for some old info about OCNJ. My grandparents bought a condo up there back when I was in the single digits, and my father used to drag the family up there every summer for 2 weeks. I have very foggy idealized memories of the old boardwalk, back before my folks split. So for me, it was the late 70s and early 80s when I walked the boardwalk. It's amazing to me how many memories this video brought up. I think the only thing I didn't see was the change when Simms stopped being a restaurant and became an arcade (I think in the early 80s? Around the time Pac-man fever hit... I think). Thank you for that trip down memory lane.

The man who built our house (around 1835) was named Drake. He made the bricks from the clay in the field. It is in the watershed for the Springfield Falls in a village originally called Drake, but now called #2 Mine. I was told he also built a brick church in Leesburg. I am wondering if he was Eleanor Drake’s father.
