It was good to see you gushing over this book. And I totally agree, as it is my second favorite book in the series. Waiting for the spoiler review now.
Love this take!
@@quarksbar3265 thank you!
A favorite part: Fear Sengar was shook by Brys Beddict’s swordsmanship. Also… demons.
@@mathewvance6882 Brys was on demon timing, wish we could’ve seen more of him before he died
@@IzzyZil20 Fear’s reaction seemed like the last (or near to) push towards desertion. And ‘demons’ should be in quotes given the author’s unique take on them. Enjoyed your review for this awesome installment!

Read Kubera one last god Its an epic high fantasy manhwa with great characters, great world building, fantastic plot twists. Its on the same level as one piece and Malazan
It’s one thing to say something on the level of Malazan, but one piece? Very interesting
@@IzzyZil20 I'm a very big one piece fan and believe me when I say I don't joke around with that statement. But kubera earned it. It's not wacky like one piece but it's very well written. You mentioned something about how Erikson writes dialogue between ancient beings and humans kubera has it. The foreshadowing of one piece kubera has it. Its very good man. But it starts slow though and the art isn't bad but gets better and it's superb by the current chapters
@@patrickspencer5033 I’ll check it out
What are your top 5 fantasy
If we’re strictly talking about Fantasy, and if one piece dosent count then. 1. The Wheel of Time 2. A Song of Ice and Fire 3. Malazan 4. First Law 5. Stormlight There’s a two scfi I’d put above Malazan which are Sun Eater and Dune.
@@IzzyZil20 wow nice. Is WOT that good despite the slog
@@patrickspencer5033 absolutely in my opinion
Ah yes. And there is Ian. If we consider his work and you read it in full reading order as some Cosmere fan would? It’s even more easer. He fills in parts. Like now there are two stories before the next book: Night of Knives and Heathy Dead. Then the Bonehunters. Of course only for maximalists.
@@nazimelmardi Yep, the deeper you get into it the more it makes sense
I would have never thought of starting with this book but it makes so much sense. Love the channel! Have you ever/would you ever speak on a panel at a con? Specifically in Seattle next April…
@@JackSamm13 I would if invited lol
I replied with a link so it may have been deleted? I’m on the programming staff for a Seattle con called Norwescon, would l love to talk about an invitation if you’re interested. Cheers!
@@JackSamm13 I would be interested, but yeah RUclips hates links lol
@@JackSamm13 do you have instagram? Perhaps you could DM there
@@IzzyZil20I’m jacksamm13 on there too, couldn’t an izzyzil that seemed a match
It’s not a prequel. Remember the killed Tiste Edur at the end by Bugg (by then old god) who sent it to the depth of the ocean? That was the one found by Quick Ben and Parran in Memories of Ice. ☝️
@@nazimelmardi so it is a prequel because it happens before.
@@IzzyZil20 what’s happening here it’s very much in line with the rest of the world. He kills the Tiste Edur and shows up there. What’s happening there now it’s in parallel with the rest of the empire. Now they start to travel. Convergence incoming meanwhile here they continue with Tehol. Fender is here the war god, disappeared in book2. To here.
@@IzzyZil20it’s parallel. He killed here, appeared there. Fender is here from book 2. The god of war, (retired let’s say). Now they will start to travel in book 6, here they continue with Tehol and the rest and will be in line again when the rest is there.
Your thoughts and opinions on this one really mirrored my own. I'm positive that your feelings about the "climax" of this book and tavore as a character will change significantly the further you get in the series. HoC is one of those books that hit different in retrospect. Great review!
@@justinwilliams2955 yeah I’m hoping that eventually on a reread I’ll feel differently about this book. I know a lot of people have it on their first read and then put it much higher on a second read so I imagine that’ll happen to me too.
The House of Chains might be about House Paran. By now, you may have already noticed how "chains" means a lot of things in this series.
@@dlasis absolutely, the chains can mean a number of things
You are not wrong. Karsa is a Conan type character but done better shown how it would be (not a hero at all but pure disaster for anyone) plus : in a mirror of a “modern” society where we can see, he is not that evil compared what they can do no matter the evolution.
Sheesh dude you have been mowing through these books recently
@@bobbob-cd9yl I’m trying lol
He did the Karsa thing to prove he can. 😂 He was called out for the too many POVs. This book didn’t wrap up the story. It sets up the narrative. Welcome Adjunct Tavore. Let’s see what she can do with the Malazan army… didn’t you notice? The next leader who did not get pov. The next is pushing the bar higher than Memories of Ice.
I think Coltaine’s gravity is larger because we never get to see inside his head. Great review
Honestly, one of the things Erikson does the best is give gravity to characters who never get a pov. Coltaine, Rake etc
You are in for a ride!
sick👍
@@seanorourke1407 thank you!
Great review for a great series 🤌🏼
@@nmal8702 appreciate it!
That was a pretty good review, and you mostly covered all the important bits except maybe Icarium and Mappo's story. Tavore sent Felisin to the mines to save her life. Otherwise she would have been killed along with their parents in the purge. She had put Baudin to get her out of the mines, but the plan didn't work properly due to the rebellion. Felisin was addicted to Durhang, which is really the opioid equivalent in Malazan world. Felisin is not supposed to be likable. Like you said, you understood why she is doing this, and that is all what is needed. We don't need to like what she does or even like her character, to understand her motivations. Her pushing everyone away and lashing out, is basically her defense mechanism to deal with all the trauma. Regarding the Shaik part, like you said, Shaik is a figurehead who has the powers of the Whirlwind goddess. So anyone can be Shaik, and after the old Shaik's death, anyone could take her place, as long as the goddess accepted her. She was just in the right place at the right time. The ship that Felisin's crew encounter in the warren was Silanda, and it contained headless Tiste Andii rowing the boat, while a lot of Tiste Edur dead bodies were strewn about, even the Tiste Edur captain was speared to the wall. This is a mystery for later, just keep this much in mind. Let's go, for Memories of Ice.
Coda- dont feel the need to justify not enjoying Felisins early story, No matter your thoughts on her us fans will get easily triggered in all kinds of ways good and bad. As long as you give her the empathy and sympathy she deserves as a victim, which you do, your fine. Im a super fan and have read the series 4 times and love Felisin, but she is a dick and hard to read.
@@believer773 lots of sympathy for her
Great insightful review, Malazan is very special. It doesnt land for every reader but so far it seems like your hooked. Cant wait to hear more if you continue.
@@believer773 I plan to continue
ok this is good news. first review made me worried i wouldnt like it but im sold
Oh, I didn't know you were Israel from Discord. Loved your GOTM review, and this one too. We had fun banter over in discord regarding the Apsalar Felisin swap part 😂. Memories of Ice will be even better. Can't wait to see your reactions. Also do a spoiler review for this book. Non spoiler just doesn't do it enough justice, as you can't discuss that ending.
@@SouravUldyssian I plan to do a spoiler review because it needs to be talked about in detail
And it’s done. Memories of Ice even better. 😁
Btw, add the word Malazan to your video title. It helpa with RUclips algorithm to recommend to more people and come up in searches.
Excellent review. The difficulty of this book is overrated. The only con you had with the book is mostly for this book only. From the next book onwards the pov shifts are not jarring at all, and done much better. As the first book was written 10 years before all the others. From book 2 you will see his writing level up, and also start delving into more themes and will be more deep. Book 2 is a slow start though and you will be in a totally different continent with almost totally new characters, which take some time to adjust to. But the ending is one of the best. Hope to see your review of book 2, Deadhouse Gates very soon.
It’s a great list considering your current number of books you say. Dune never was alone on the top tier. From Asimov’s robot-empire-foundation series, Banks - Culture, Hyperion, Neuromancer, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (and Kindred), Ursula Le Guin’s work and now Thee-Body Problem… 😉 Well, we know the fantasy is about to change… Malazan is coming up. 😂 And there is the Realm of the Elderlings, Discworld, Dandelion Dynasty, etc…
