2017 RAM 1500 gas cap light on and possible fixes.
New gas cap 25.00, Vapor leak detector 75.00, Disconnected vapor tube 0.00. Check all tubing from fuel tank and filler neck before buying other items.

Oem gas cap went bad on me. Put an aftermarket one and the light didnt go away. Finally put the new seal from the aftermarket cap on my oem cap and the light went away.
@pzpinkslip123 Hey thanks, that's good to know.
Great video! So I have a 2016 ram 1500 with a po456 code. When I go to start it there is a very high rev then idles down with no fuel smell So I scanned the code with a small scanner from autozone that suggest the canister purge valve im not sure how accurate this is. Before changing it what are the chances that it is the leak detection pump?
It's possible I suppose. It does sound like more of an actual vac leak. Have you check your vac lines? I suppose a bad gas cap could cause this issue as well especially if you are noticing the issue mostly after filling up.
And what was the name of that sensor calledon the rear of your fuel tank?
fuel vapor leak detection pump
Clip likely came off at dealership or inspection or brake installer...someone did it to get you back in shop to charge you for a easy fix. Setups...I don't trust any of them anymore...gaming us at every chance.
Thank you. I will check on my 2015 and see.
I got 18 dodge Rebel. Mine just came on to I will try that hope it works
I had a 2017 not one poem other than that after putting 153,000 miles on it. Just bought a 2021, I'm sure I'll run into this again. Hope it works for you.
You’re not a moron ! A moron is the person that doesn’t at least try to figure it out and end up paying the dealer hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a 25+ dollar part and 30 min of his day !!😡👍good job!
Good point, Thanks.
That’s not the only Chrysler problem that has that gas cap light issue. Chrysler is a pain in the ass.
I have had the small evap leak code for a little bit. I did the new gas cap from dealer (rip off price) and pulled the battery cable for a few minutes. That removed the cel but on my scanner it still shows as permanent code po456 even though I have cleared codes from my scanner and pulled battery and my cel has not come back on yet. I might be going under to check these two items now
I replaced mine and the dash lights are still on, I'll give it a week of driving b4 I unplug the battery.
Yea, if that was the problem it should reset itself after 50 miles or so.
Second time it comes on when replaced
Hey Norma, this can be a frustrating chase for sure. Have you checked your lines underneath, replaced your fuel cap with a new oem fuel cap. Also, topping off your fuel tank can cause that sensor to fail again and again.
Much appreciated 👍
Same thing with my 2017 Dodge Ram so I'll be troubleshooting underneath the truck because the dealership wants to charge $300+ without really knowing what thr problem is... they just took a wild guess.
Bro I did same thing on my 09 charger light back on 😡
Did you already try a new oem gas cap
@@thewiz8073 no that’s my next move
I have been smelling fuel and bought the new valve and the light still comes on. I am out to go look at mine, I bet it is the same issue. Thank you very much.
You're welcome, Just curious if that was the issue.
Thanks broski
Recently had my fuel pump replaced on my 2011 1500, and in the process this happened. Was under my truck for all of three seconds. Thanks!
8/22 - This was the remedy for my '15 Ram 1500, $24 fix, took 15 minutes. Cleared 6 evap codes and that annoying azz "check fuel cap" message. Liked & subscribed, ty much!
What was the name of the part please?
Thanks for the video 🙏
You're welcome
Do you have to clear the code for the gas cap light to go off? or will it go off on its own?
If you disconnect the negative battery cable for 20 minutes it should clear the code. If the code comes back after roughly 50 to 100 miles of driving then that wasn't the issue. If you don't clear the code it will just take time for the computer to realize the issue is no longer and should clear on its own.
Wanted to like your video but I wasn’t going to make it 665+ 1 likes. Thanks for the info
Agreed, I still hope it helped you out!
Bro thank u for this video!! I have a 2017 ram and i have checked this i sure as hell will now lol
You're welcome!
Any idea of what it could be if this wasn’t the issue? I checked and mine is clipped on correctly
Hello, Have you already replaced the sensor and gas cap as well?
@@thewiz8073 I’ve tried replacing the gas cap but the light didn’t go away, haven’t replaced sensor. What is it called?
@@jessrodzz It's called a Fuel Vapor leak detection pump. You may also want to change the purge solenoid which is at the other end of the system under the hood. Both very simple if you are mechanically inclined. It is advised to always disconnect the negative side of the battery cable prior to doing work on the fuel system and always wear standard protective gear. One reason the leak detection pum can fail is from topping off while fueling. Don't top off if you have been, it puts pressure on the valve according to the mechanic at my local dealer.
Had mine smoke tested. Found small leak in hose and fixed it. Still have the issue so I’ll be looking at parts now.
The problem may not go away instantly after repair because the computer will need time to decide that there us no longer a problem. The way around it is to disconnect the battery for 20 mins and then reconnect. If the problem is truly gone the light won't come back on. Do you know if it's had to to reset, or if they disconnected the battery. Just a thought.
Thanks for the video and the advice.
Dude what a video thanks
You're welcome, hope it helps.
This is for code P1457 ??
P0457 Gas cap light
Thank you
You're welcome
My issue is the gas pump keeps clicking off, when I’m filling my tank, I wonder if it’s all related?
I believe this I a known issue from the filler neck being so steep on those trucks. Do you always fill at the same station?
@@thewiz8073 I have 2 that I use normally, but when this started I tried about 5 different stations to test it out and it did the same thing.
@@jameslittle5139 Gotcha, I have a particular station where that sucker gets stuck down in there and I have to fight like he'll to get it out. People probably think I'm crazy when they watch me.
Great Video and Great Info. Got the same problem. I'll check it before I buy the Evap Valve. BIG THANKS!!
Thank u
You're welcome
Ive tried getting my hand in there how did you do it
Just crawled under from the driver's side and reached up in there. If I remember correctly it's just a quarter turn to the left. What year is your truck?
Also, make sure your truck has had time for the exhaust to cool.
Very helpful thank you
Suspicious
Wow that did it and the dealerships and mechanics have been fooled for years on that!!
Unbelievable, So happy it helped.
Wow that was it!! No engine light, no gas cap light, and got years the dealership and every mechanic shop been saying drop the gas tank and it'll cost hundreds of$$$, THOSE THIEVES
Thanks I have 2008 Dodge Ram 4.7l keep coming back with the same issue but unfortunately still can find the issue
Hey Victor, same issue? Is that the gas cap light issue?
@@thewiz8073 yes at list that is what it keep tell loose fuel cap I replace it with dealer oem unfortunately it keep show up change purge valve and canister leak detector valve I even place a smoke machine but it show no leak am frustrated man thanks for the tip it really help a lot of your videos
It could have been that someone had the same issue but tried to steal yours to fix there's I have the same issue currently
Anything is possible now days, that's for sure.
Kool info to know your video is educational since the dealer missed that they probably Dident put it on a lift
Nailed it!!!
Bought one and installed it. Problem gone! Thank you brother.
You're welcome, glad it helped.
Ram 2014 5.7 1500 gas cap light came on this a.m. really hoping its that little clip...cause im not sure where that white sensor is that you showed at the beginning....and whats the worstcase scenario for driving like this today or next few days with the light on..?
The leak detection pump, also known as the EVAP system integrity module (ESIM) is generally located at the rear of the fuel tank on top of the tank. Not sure if this is the correct model for your year but it will look similar to this. www.summitracing.com/parts/MOP-04861962AB. Is it OK to drive? If this is all it is then yes it's probably fine, but I can't really make that determination for you. You can go to Autozone and have them pull the code that is causing the error and then you'll have a better idea of what the actual problem is. But, being a RAM and the gas cap light, it's likely that it's one or the other. Hope this helps.
@@thewiz8073 huge thnk you for the insight..! Gonna dig in later....thnx again
@@508_Phax You're welcome, keep in mind also it can be something as simple as needing a new gas cap, If you haven't checked that already. I would recommend OEM on the cap, more expensive but worth it in my opinion, but a worn gas cap seal can cause your light to come on as well.
@@thewiz8073 im still using the original gas cap...its still on the little hanging thing lol but im sure it can be worn, so ill def chk that, thnk u again !! How difficult is it to access the gas sensor..(IF one was to attempt to replace it) im def mechanically inclined, but on a 1-10 what are we talkig
@@508_Phax it's super easy at least on the 2017, it's basically a push in and twist. If I remember correctly there was one other electrical type plug in that had to be unplug hust to make it easier to remove the other. literally took me less than 10 minutes.
Thanks for the information. 2014 ram same issue. Unknown reason that hose was unclipped
You bet, glad it helped.
Can’t name the part? Lol
Yes actually I can, just all over in the other comments as well. It's the vapor leak detection sensor. You're Welcome
Before i had this problem my gas nozzle was always clicking off and now it doesnt have any problems pumping fuel just have check engine light
So the dodge dealer mech missed that when they put it on the rack, wow that could be easily seen during the inspection . thanks for posting
You're welcome, glad it helped.
I crawled under my truck to find my leak detection pump just hanging there. Now it looked like it was intact but I moved it around and saw it wasn't. The hose you're talking about was closed, but now you got me wanting to check it again lol
There is an orange that goes on that leak detection pump so make sure thats not missing. Good luck, hopefully this helped.
@@thewiz8073 I went back and checked, everything was good. I tried to remove the pump again, but it didn’t wanna twist counter clockwise. Either way, it’s in there good and the check engine light is off and not throwing codes.
@@PigeonMan5000 OH good, and that was supposed to say o-ring not orange, just caught that. Glad it worked out.
glad I found this..........thanks.
You're welcome, hope it fixes your problem.
What is that white sensor called ? I think that is the issue with my truck
Fuel vapor leak detection pump
Thanks bud same issue
