    Such a tough one to navigate in a family relationship. How do you handle it when someone in your family is angrily passionate in one direction and you strongly disagree, but they can't not talk politics at a family gathering? My brother and I spent years not speaking due to political differences and our inability to "disagree nicely." We finally got over ourselves and chose to not talk about that. I'm so happy we did - he passed away a couple years later and I cherish the time we got to spend together in those last years.

      Hi @Itchyfootscratch, thank you for sharing your insights. What a testament to the love you had for each other, that you were able to reconcile and overcome the politics! You are correct, it is a very tough thing to navigate when someone is adamant about expressing their political views. I have found myself shutting the conversation down by saying, 'you have given me a lot to think about, let me take some quiet time with it.' I have also chosen to hang with other family. In the end, maintaining mutual respect and focusing on what truly matters-our love and connection-helps us rise above the differences and strengthens our bonds. Even if that means we choose a higher road and just don't engage. Keep sharing, we love to hear from you!

    Glass half full... we just had a big water main break in the house. Thought it was going to be an expensive, long repair. Discovered it was much worse... more leaks and termites! Torally sucks, but so thankful that we found that now, with the walls torn down already, instead of years from now after much more damage!

    i'm telling you - you two are 100% right! (especially about the music!! i also love a variety, as Lani shared, BUT - years ago for some reason i always played the sound track from fiddler on the roof when i did "attack" cleaning! and yes, it put me in the mood. time would go by and i'd think and clean and sing! the satisfaction was tremendous.) i do love the way you talk about baby steps - spend 15 mins, etc. You're both very motivating and inspiring ; ) do keep up the good work because you're doing a great job!

    Really enjoyed this and looking forward to life skills. one of my favorite things to do is discover a better way to do a thing. it never ceases to amaze me when i've done a thing for 5 to 50 years, and up pops an idea i never thought of before!! it happens frequently, and by way of affirmation i tell someone - guess what i invented today? it's more fun to say invented than discovered, so that's how i roll with it! To let you ladies know, my gratitude is kind of a combo of what the two of you do. i do write it down at times, but often it's just thanking God or others throughout the day. Since writing it down makes me more mindful of it, i've taken cards that are throw-aways after use, and written on them. tonight, i paused your vid to write something down, and 3 more things came to mind! Keep up the good work, you ARE inspiring and I AM learning new insights ; )

    "the power is in the space between listening and responding" THAT is a mind-blower to me, never heard it before. i do have trouble reacting & have heard a lot about NOT doing it, but this gives me a HOW & the motivation to start doing it! also silence... i've never been comfortable with that either. these, along with your reversal techniques are great tools! Thank you ladies!

    I'm four minutes in and I can already tell this is going to be a powerful episode. As someone with ADHD, my mind often runs off ahead of me in conversation to my detriment; the ability to stop and think through the reaction you're having is a really important and underrated skill. Again I'll share a sentiment/quote that I find relevant - it's your second thought that defines you. Years ago, I read a post about what is polite to comment on visually about others, and the example was something like: "ew, her dress is so dated." > "why am I being so judgemental? She should wear what makes her happy, and she's killing it!" Thank you both, as ever, for sharing your wisdom with us!

    Good stuff! Fear is a subject for a series all by itself. Learning to recognize and analyze it and then do the thing anyway is so empowering. Doing it successfully in one area can lead to doing it successfully in other areas as well - bust through the fear and go skydiving and the fear of communicating with a coworker may be easier to ignore!

    • @AdultingWithAmyLani
      @AdultingWithAmyLani 7 месяцев назад

      Per Elenor Roosevelt "You must do that thing which you think you cannot"! Thank you for the comment about pushing through your fear because it becomes easier each time you try. You are right; practice is empowering.

    Well I'm late to the table but wow! I'm so excited for you Lani, this sounds like it's right up your alley. You've always been such a great neighbor to Cal and I, it's really due to you reaching out that we've gotten to know each other as well as we have over these long years. I LOVE the fact that you and Amy have different opinions on some things but are able to respect each other and discuss your views. I'm so grateful that my son Bill and I can do that. It's a rare treasure. Too rare! Hopefully you and Amy can encourage others to do the same and discover it's really not that scary at all!! As you say, it's most often a learning experience, even if your views remain the same. Best of luck to you two!

    super wise words from lani about needing to stumble several times before you can start to really grasp why you fell! and amy's follow-up too - one of the best pieces of advice i ever received was to treat your inner monologue like it's coming from your best friend. if you wouldn't stay friends with that person, maybe you're being too hard on yourself! can't wait to hear more :)
