W Spur Horsemanship
Добавлен 9 окт 2020
It’s more than training, it’s horsemanship.
Proper lunging and warm up techniques.
Lunging isn’t about chasing a horse in a circle until they are too physically tired to buck you off when you ride. Lunging is not only to physically warm your horse up but it’s also about mentally warming your horse up. You should be able to control your horse through every step and get them in tune with you and mentally prepared for the job ahead.

Biggest mistake riders make when coming across a “scary obstacle”
Просмотров 62110 месяцев назад
Biggest mistake riders do when coming across a scary obstacle with their horses is to try and force the horse across the obstacle by binding the horse up and pressuring the horse forward. What you want to do with your horses is not to draw their attention to what they are scared of and loose attention to you, but to draw attention back to you so that they forget about the scary things. If you want to give “training advice” from clips out of a over hour long session feel free to watch the entire series on RUclips first to make sure you give accurate “advice” Reba at the last branding we were at had someone rim fire her multiple times and she ended up with rope burn from it. The branding pen was hectic with very little room with a handful of people that probably shouldn’t have ...

Found this from a post on Facebook. Much appreciated
Hi Sara, my trainer took my horse out on a trail ride today by the new facility that I moved him to a week ago. I asked her if she was going to lunge him prior to the ride because he is not been ridden in over a week and again this was A whole new area. She said she was just gonna go get on him and take him on a trail ride. I wasn’t opposed to it but my gut felt otherwise. She told me that during the ride he was very forward and at one point he did rear. He has never reared before. I am planning on taking him back out tomorrow and I’m going to use this method of lunging so he doesn’t get keyed up. I am hoping that by incorporating lunging like this, will help establish better communication. I don’t know if I had a question, but if you have any comment, I certainly welcome it
Let me know how it goes! If he’s still pretty fresh send me a message and see if we can get it sorted out for you!
@@wspurhorsemanship2287 he was nice and relaxed lunging, trail was fine except for a few spooks but I can see where the issue lies. Impulsion. He tends to speed up a lot where i feel i have to micro manage it. I’m not gonna worry about collection until I get that under control on a loose rein. Do u have any vids on that? Thanks again!
So, I'm curious.. Have you ever tried doing liberty with her? You speak about doing things at the end of a lung line - but does that hold true off of the line and free to do what she wants? Also, are you able to do all that without moving from one spot - just rotating round a foot that's planted? Can you get her to move towards you without any tack or pressure? Can you lunge her without a halter? I have nothing against tack - you just speak highly of your ability to maneuver your horse with distance and body language (which is awesome). However, I feel like her body language communicates a different intent. I see her as being disinterested, bored, and frustrated. I saw her stomping her foot out of frustration, I saw her with her head to the outside of the circle, I saw her flipping her nose to the outside of the circle, I saw her shoulder caving into the circle almost the entire time, I also saw her, in general, flip her head a decent amount. How far can you take what you've taught her? How often do you push her and try doing different things on the ground with her? Can she move off you with her nose tipped into you? Will she walk/trot/lope with her body shaped into you? Will she relax into her gaits to the point where she's not flipping her head a bunch?
I’m not well versed enough in liberty training to try it on my own. I’m not one to practice a means of training without having proper training myself as I want to do things properly with my horses with no guessing games. She’s stomping and swishing her tail do to gnats being out now now out of frustration. As far as her nose being out that’s something we’ve worked on a lot. She’s a mustang and has always looked and checked out her surroundings as her instinct from being on range for 7 years of her life prior to being gathered. She is bored as basic groundwork is not really her favorite thing in the world. She’s been a ranch horse the past 5 years since I’ve had her and she’s used to covering a lot of country pushing cattle, branding, roping and much more. Groundwork for her is boring compared to the job she loves.
NO, NO ,NO. bit fitter here. Get the bit fitted correctly! Jeez. This is the 21st century, not the 1200s!!
This is fitted correctly for a western horse.
Get a proper bit lifter geez

Was just gonna comment on your FB page that you should do a video on this! 😊
I'm posting this purely out of curiosity... Why do you allow her to toss her head to the outside?
I’m allowing her to check things out and look at the rope so that she gets more confident with it. Letting her curiosity build her confidence
@@wspurhorsemanship2287 To me she doesn't look like she's looking at the rope, if she was I'd see it as a steadier head set and even an ear pointing to the rope, and even looking into where the rope is coming from - not flipping her nose out, yanking on you, caving her shoulder and ribcage into you and looking out. While she's being super aggressive, to me she looks like she's pushing into you with her shoulder. She looks like she's trying to escape or shove her way out of what you're doing. Through the research I've done, horses don't typically root their head towards something they're curious about - normally it's a quiet, look at something, ears forward, head set changing depending on distance from the horse type deal...
@@heyguysitsme.5560 thank you for your input, but I know this horse well as I adopted her when she was 7 from the BLM wild horse corrals and she’s been my go to ranch horse for every job and is in the two rein currently. My focus in this video isn’t looking for correctness while lunging it’s getting over her uneasiness of the rope around her butt.
@@wspurhorsemanship2287 I guess I was making those statements more from the side of trying to understand what you're seeing. I'd love to hear your knowledge... I didn't mean my comment to make it sound like I was telling you that you were wrong or doing something wrong, I made my comment with the intention of comparing views of what's happening which is when people learn. If it didn't come across that way I'm sorry. I've heard your story with Reba more than a few times as I've been following you for a while. I don't doubt you know your horse. I get having a focus - but to me I wouldn't want my horse to push into me no matter what I was focused on. Again I'd love to hear your thoughts and knowledge.
💯 ...same is true for CBD! 👈🐎🧠🐎❤️🐎🤗🐎
Good topic and content.
yes, but when you condition a horse, he comes out of the average. The 20% is a rule for "If anyone gets on any horse, how heavy can that person be to ride that horse, given that I have 0 information on both" It's something to have an average, logically when you condition both the person and the horse, they will have more capabilities, but then they also stop being the average.
Cricket trying so hard to be caught. Bless her!
She really is a thinker and really wants to please. Once she figures things out she really tries so hard.
What a wonderful trait in a horse. I’ve been playing with making my mare easy to catch and it’s so fun. Love building a useful connection.
One of the biggest pet peeves of mine is when someone just walks out the gate and turns the horse loose away from the gate. I have always gone in and had a horse face me before it leaves. If it tries to leave me first, then I hold it there until it relaxes and afterwards I need to be the one to leave it first.
Really good video, but rather redundant. I'll have to try this with two donkeys that are mixed in with 3 young horses. I'm trying to make friends with the donkeys.
Good Video. Dispel the myth.
Excellent, your standards of chiropractic, dental, vet check, SHOULD be the industry standard, across the board.. I think you had a post recently about the best compliment you’ve ever received was from a body worker who came to work on Reba. Thanks for another great video!
Great job. However you're using that bosal like a leverage bit. Try utilizing the principle of bend a little more. Use one rein for a while and let her feel a spur just a touch. By using one rein she will eventually quit bracing when you ask her to stop or turn. Keep up the good work.
I don’t know how I never saw your channel! Been following you and Reba on FB in a mustang group for a long time. Realized it was you as soon as I saw Reba in one of your videos.❤
I just started using RUclips seriously only recently within the last month so don’t feel bad! Lol
@@wspurhorsemanship2287I’m stoked to have more long-form content from you & these horses! Tell me, will there be a Halloween themed video, something along the lines of: How my horses react/respond to the Grinch😂 Seriously, you’re beautiful & I love that you’ve got a good sense of humor☺️
God's blessing that I found you on RUclips :) after so many years of watching videos, No one has explained better how to work with a horse. You made my day and work with horses happy, I'm talking about your channel in general. Big hello from Croatia :)
Very savvy use of communication with the horses. First time I've seen this type of technique being used.
I just subscribed and tried to get notifications but that wasn't allowed. Any idea why?
I’m not entirely sure, but I will try and get that sorted!
Hello from Nova Scotia! I Just found you , Great videos! I hope you continue to put out content
Excellent!
So very helpful and easy to follow. Appreciate you!! ❤
Thank you!
Hi! I’m commenting on this video because your other videos are set for made for kids. Not sure if that is intentional or not. But you can’t comment questions when they are set that way. I think you can change that setting. My question is on you last video talking about transitions. I would love to see you make a video about how to teach your horse to transitions from walk to canter lop. Your videos have really helped me get my older horses moving again!! Thank you for the help!!
Oh! I did not realize I had done that! I’ll get that fixed thank you!
