I don't know, everything will eventually FAIL. I've seen good gate valves, I've seen crappy ones. Gate valves are not meant to be opened and closed repeatedly, whereas ball valves are. Seems a waste of money to use a ball valve for a house main. Ball valves have seals on the the fore and aft side of the ball. These seals can fail too, especially when a large piece of debris gets in there (think about washer less faucets, can't tolerate debris).
