I suspect some of the motivation for contrafacts came from the producers not wanting to pay royalties. Stuff like "Koko" or "Quasimodo." And of course, the blues and rhythm contrafacts predated that.

Here's one more subscriber towards becoming a YT millionaire! It's not about the drum, but how you play it. I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat based on this video. Based on your description, I won't, because I have too many cymbals already, and don't want to go that way with snares! My Pearl 14x4 can cover most of what I need, and a Supraphonic can do the rest.

This has become an all-time favourite piece of any musician, any genre, since I first heard it a year ago. Perfect timing as I enter my own golden years. There’s a “chicken-skin” moment (as we say in Hawaii) at 6:13ff.

Ok, kudos, it’s a nice exercise. I chuckled a little at this at first, but then attempting to play it on guitar and it kicks my ass way more than it should!

Love the self-sufficiency bit, My guitar teacher has been drilling this into me without saying so overtly! I also really like the nod to backing tracks. I use them all the time but felt that maybe they weren't a good use of my practice time. Glad to hear differently.
