Make with Notion - my thoughts on the future of Notion
I'm Russian and after blocking access to notion from it's side this September I really tried to find something that will have at least minimum of necessary for me. Actually, I'm not a Notion geek and I mostly need database in calenar mode, some tables, some text editing. I almost don't use advanced stuff, just lot, lot of basics. But it turned out that the only good alternative to notion is a good vpn. There are alternatives in the world (coda is pretty good, by the way), many copies, clones and other stupp popped like a pimples in puberty here in Russia, but none of them is near as good as notion. Unfortunately
As always, great video. Thank you for all the thoughtful analysis you put into all of these videos. They really help me. The mobile Tana app for iOS was released on TestFlight so it's still in beta. I believe they are planning to launch publicly around January or so. Tana works really well but it does still have some issues to work through, as you mentioned. I subscribed for an annual plan with the early pricing of $10/month ($120/year) so I think it's worth it. I am really excited to see how this continues to evolve.
Thank you. First search came up your suggests and ideas. Gave me some valuable information
I’m glad I could help!
What's absolutely annoying with Trello IMHO is that to do do anything (exept for stupidly dragging the 'card' around), you have to 'flip' it first. This is especially aggravating when using Trello for to-do/project management where you can't just click a checkbox to mark a card as 'done'. But I also imagine it a nuisance for note taking. And no Power-up will fix that. Note to Trello's developers: Forced context switching is BAD.
What Types of Games Do You Prefer?
Really into mmo video games 🎮
What program do you use to record your screen? Great video
Thank you! I am using obs both on my mac and on my windows pc :)
Clickup: Their subreddit is flooded with complaints about unexpected charges.
I have seen a few complaints. This video is getting old so I should probably do an updated video on it.
Failers are not failures!
I also used Day One for a long time until I found Diarly, which is very similar and has more options. I like that I have a wider variety of themes and fonts to choose from - I really like the sepia theme and the Lora font, neither of which are available in Day One. I don't do bullet journaling but more of a literary reflective journaling. Also, Diarly is included in Setapp.
I will dive deeper into Diarly. I recently tried out journalistic and I really love it for more reflective journaling. I have been using it every single day since I got it and I am also still using twos as my bullet journal.
I've been very impressed with Capacities. The free version does about anything a person would need. I like Keep for quick lists (like shopping lists), but Capacities has a really nice phone app too. Obsidian felt too complex for me, but I love the mind mapping Canvas built into it and still use it because I haven't found anything better. Great list and good content. Subbed!
thank you so much! Capacities is an amazing application and it is just getting better and better!
For me it isn't worth the price with its zero tolerance, always-on internet connection requirement. If your internet connection drops for a second (literally!) the program locks you out... You can't do anything - at all - until the connection is restored. It's useless when traveling long distances by train or plane and having your laptop to work on. And, even if your connection is unstable with bad WIFI in a school or office building, it is still annoying to work with. The mobile app has just been launched, I think, but on iOS only - and Android is still being processed. It looks good, but still not worth the price with such an aggressive internet connection requirement. Having said that, I do use it a lot! It's great for what it is, but it isn't ready for "prime time" yet.
I remember they did admin early on that in Norway they have internet connection in most places. However, that is not the same for other folks and they said they underestimated how much that would affect user satisfaction. Hoping they can figure out some offline solution in the next 2 years.
It still has a lot of work to do. But it also just got out of the alpha faze this year so I think it will be much better. When it comes to the the fact that you always have to be online I heard that they are working on something. So in a year or two they should have some offline functionality. They did not think about the offline connection because in Norway we are almost always connected. There is WIFI in cabins on top of mountains. I guess they forgot to think about the fact that it is not like that anywhere else. I think it is expensive, but with all the AI you are getting I still think it is worth it at least on the yearly plan. But I do agree with your points though.
@@danielpourasg Yep, I totally agree with your reply. The offline mode is the most requested feature on their website too. And in The Netherlands we have 4G coverage across the entire country, and Wifi in most places. But 4G can be unreliable indoors - and WiFi to, with too many routers in a small area for instance, as is the case often here. I do use it a lot, and I fully agree that it will be absolutely amazing in a years time!
Thank you for continuously providing us with new knowledge, I am forever grateful for your sharing
Thank you so much!
I’ve been waiting for this! I just paid for the 50% off life-time subscription.
I did exactly the same!
I tried to, but their billing website billed me > $90. Didn’t give me the opportunity to insert their promo code.
I have been a Craft enthusiast since I started using it a year and a half ago. But over time I've realized that I was basically just using it as a fancy and feel-good word processor. I never used backlinking in Craft - I don't know why - but now, with all these new features, I'm going to make the most of it. Its "databases" or collections look appealing and easy to use, nothing like the infinite complexity of Notion. Since I have a Setapp subscription, I can enjoy Craft for "free". Thanks for the video, I was waiting for it! [add-on: Craft v3 has AI powered by Chat GPT 4.0, just as Reflect!]
Maybe we are failures. Just have to accept and try to improve than reassuring ourselves that we are not!
I agree that we should work on improving ourselves. But I think that believing you are a failure when in most cases you are not does not help with improving yourself. I also don’t believe in being a failure. We can fail at things and we will because that is a huge part of life but that does not make us failures.
@danielpourasg indeed, but for some, it turns into a compulsive behavior (reassurance, constant checking, challenging internally, back to reassurance), which becomes a cycle. Acceptance and mindfulness approach can be beneficial for such people. Each failure is a stepping stone, a lesson learnt, a new possibility awaits us. 🙏🏻
Found you recently and enjoying your videos! Have you reviewed Treesheets and Zim wiki? Two of my favourites.
All of these are really nice apps. I would love to use craft, but without the object based system I can't really stick to it... That said, capacities is the app I'm looking forward the most! Great list
Thank you! I think capacities will do really well. I tested out the new craft and I have been in love. Amazing update. But I understand the preference towards object based note taking!
@ I have to say that after that comment, I started reflecting how much I needed the object based notes. And I figured that I could just use databases for making some “objects”. Soooo… I signed the plus plan, and your video was the biggest point to make me reflect about it. Thanks for that! (Also, as a Brazilian, the 50% discount for life was a big thing for me)
This year I fell in love with Twos and RemNote again. In a video by Parker, the creator of Twos, he said that this bunch of fancy note-taking apps that are so cool these days actually have a lot of features that most people don't need. That's my case. I now use Twos as a capture tool, especially on my iPhone, and RemNote comes in very handy as I am learning German, but it's a fantastic note-taking app as well. I tried Anytype some time ago and found it to be a nightmare. I don't have enough patience or interest to figure out how it works. Do you live in Alesund? I was there when I visited Norway!
Twos has been so good this year.
They have done an amazing job!
Well, these are nice but I personally am looking forward to Heptbase 2025.
Heptabase is great! Probably the best visual note taking app.
just started using anytype and will be my main note taking app from now on, I hope I made the right choice.
It is a great app!
Can't download the app on windows it says "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. <Error> <Code>AccessDenied</Code> <Message/> <BucketName>anytype-release</BucketName> <RequestId>tx0000076023d2cc1f5774c-006745ad9a-119076a0d-fra1b</RequestId> <HostId>119076a0d-fra1b-fra1-zg02</HostId> </Error>" when clicking download button on website
My favourite PKM app (local, secured, mains fonctions are free...). Easier to use than Obsidian for my job usages (capturing, research and link informations). I still struggle to handle Obsidian and use Notion for the databases.
So in heptabase you gather cards together and link them in a whiteboard, in affine where do you gather docs and link them, in an another bigger doc or what? And how does doc transclusion work in an another doc if you use edgeless mode?
I would say that you put blocks on the whiteboard instead of cards.
Do you still recommend this a year later? Also, is there a way to create template of documents I want to reuse over and over again? Eg a weekly planner template.
I still think it is really good and I recommend it if you are a very technical person. I have not figured out the templates yet.
Looks great! Is it only an Apple application ?
No android or desktop app yet but it is coming soon
From what I've seen so far, I'm looking forward to using Reflect, but there's one other thing that struck me about what you said. You say that Reflect's AI helps you improve your English writing. Do you think Reflect's AI works on the same level as a dedicated grammar checker like Grammarly or ProWriting Aid?
So I’m using more as an editor after I have finished my writing. I think it is really good, but for now I think grammarly and prowriting aid are better. Simply because you have much more control. But honestly the differences aren’t too big. So it depends on what kind of user interface you like.
This app looks great. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks a lot for these details, but I’m going with Brite. It’s easier and more understandable with a clear and clean menu.
The most important thing is to pick an app that works for you and you enjoy using.
Thanks for featuring Noteey! hopefully noteey will rank higher in your 2026 tier list~ we will launch a new massive milestone version V1.10.0 next week, please stay tuned😀: Ten new features in V1.10.0: 1. Homepage improvements 2. Data syncing with third-party cloud storage (like Google drive, onedrive, iCloud, etc) 3. Mention cards/whiteboards/journals within cards 4.Global right sidebar(including Library/Journal/Highlights) that can be opened from cards, journals, and whiteboard 5. Version history (supports whiteboards and cards) 6. PDF annotation notes can be edited on whiteboard 7. Whiteboard can now be linked to each other 8. New "link mode" for importing local files (reads original file location without creating copies, saves space) 9. Improved image loading speed - whiteboards with hundreds of images open instantly 10. Connection line improvements - related lines automatically delete when removing cards Btw, though i don't agree with the definition of "noteey is offline heptabase". but we will spend more time to make some similiar page more different.😃
What is your difference from Heptabase?
I’m really excited to see what you come up with the next year.
@@NS-kg9rp Noteey Compared to Heptabase: Pros and Cons Pros: 1) Noteey has a complete offline mode and doesn't require account registration, while Heptabase does not. 2) Noteey has a feature-rich whiteboard (supporting hand drawing, shapes, etc.), which Heptabase lacks. 3) Noteey's whiteboard can be exported as a local copy that others can open and edit, unlike Heptabase. 4) Noteey supports deep links and can connect locally with apps like Obsidian/Devonthink, which Heptabase cannot do. 5) Noteey has full local capabilities, allowing you to import local files directly onto the whiteboard, unlike Heptabase. 6) Noteey has video annotation features, while Heptabase does not. 7) Noteey supports data synchronization through third-party cloud services(like Google drive, iCloud, etc), which Heptabase does not offer. 8) Noteey has a purchasable standalone version, while Heptabase does not. Cons: 1) Heptabase has a mobile app, while Noteey does not. 2) Heptabase has a web version, but Noteey currently does not (expected to support it in Q1 2025). 3) Heptabase has Readwise integration, while Noteey does not.
I appreciate this video. I do consider myself as a little bit of a PKM nerd, and I struggle with object-based note taking. It makes sense -- in theory. In practice, however, I can't get started. My problem is that whenever I open Anytype or Capacities, I feel like I have to create the object categories themselves *before* I can create the objects. That creates a barrier of entry. With even the most basic note-taking app, I can get straight into creating the note, and *afterwards* I can decide if the note is this or that. I can create the "object type" through tagging it and then just searching or filtering for the tag. That works much better for me. Like imagine if you had to have all of your tags already fleshed out in the app before you could start writing stuff?? I went in and double checked; Capacities literally asks me to select an object type when I click CMD + N. In Anytype, it automatically sets to object type Page. It feels very clunky. It gets in the way. I usually create a new note because I have a thought or idea or something that I need WRITTEN DOWN NOW, there is a sense of urgency, and having to stop and make a decision while I'm also trying very hard to not forget the thing I want to write down...?! No, thanks. I think an approach to objects like (super)tags in Logseq or Tana would work better for me, and not get in the way.
When I first learned Anytype I just used the page object. But I definitely agree with you. If I could write something then giving it an object that would be much better. Sometimes object based note taking feels like deciding on your folders before writing a note. I don’t need organisation until i have a few notes. That is why I don’t think these apps will become mainstream in a while. They are hard to learn and feel weird even for people in the note taking space. There is too much friction. With that said I think the apps will become easier to use with time. I also think object based note taking is great when you have started building a system, but it is just too hard to get started with.
helpful
Glad it helped!
Which visual note taking app might be useful for a bachelor (eng) student
You need something that has bi-directional links so you can create connections. If you don’t require collaboration tools and want to access it across devices, Heptabase is a good option. If you need collab, then Scrintal is probably the best choice. You can also take advantage of their student discount.
I personally would prefer Heptabase but when I studied I mainly did it by myself. I would probably look into Heptabase and scrintal.
Thanks. At 11:00, in the Date property, you can enter an end date too, to create a time period. I don't find this possibility in my Siyuan. Is this something that has been removed of new versions?
Forget it, find it!
That was a beautiful video. I don't usually like authors talking about their personal lives, but in your case it's different. It's only been a short time since I discovered your channel, but it's been so useful to me that it's become my go-to channel when I want to get deep into a note-taking app. But I also enjoy the way you say things and even your natural tone of voice. Nothing overproduced, everything flows naturally. I loved when you said "achievement is not getting X number of subscribers; achievement is doing it every day and enjoying it". That's an illuminating truth for me. Keep it up Daniel, you are a fantastic youtuber and your videos always bring me knowledge and joy.
Thank you so much for this very thoughtful comment! It makes me really happy that you enjoy my videos and I am able to provide some value. When I make personal videos I try to make it as simple as possible. Just talking about how things feel and hopefully someone can find some value in that. I’m glad that it comes across in that way. I am a really big believer in the idea of “the journey is the destination.” If I am happening doing something. I don’t need to be good at that thing. I just have to do it. Success should be finding your happiness and staying happy. Hopefully that will be the definition of success in the future. Once again thank you so much for your comment!
Another wonderful video Daniel. Ive said it before and I'll say it again, your videos are refreshing exactly because they're not overproduced. They're real, honest and that comes across in spades. I hope you continue to make many many more and enjoy each journey in the process.... 🤗👍
Thank you so much! And thank you for always being so supportive! There will be many more! 😊
I've been using workflowy basically everyday for the past 2 years it's the only app that has stood with me even through my PKM phase of trying every single app. It has replaced the need for me having a full blown overly complicated Knowledge management system.
You should definitely look into Morgen. Having used Akiflow, Motion, Sunsama...Comparatively (especially with the price) - Morgen does more...and is like half the price! Also - the developers and team at Morgen is SUPER hungry and very active with development.
If Craft has the same learning curve as Obsidian, I must have missed something because I found it so easy and intuitive to use from the start. I'm absolutely in love with it. You forgot xTiles! By the way, I am addicted to your videos.
I was a bit unclear in the video! I said that craft does not seem to be having the same learning curve as obsidian. It is easier to learn, but the whiteboards are at the same level as obsidian. Sorry for being unclear! Craft is an amazing app, easy to use and intuitive. I’m excited to see where it goes in 2025. I’m glad you are enjoying the videos. I’m doing an end of year tier list soon and I will make sure to include Xtiles! Thank you so much for your comment!
I'm just getting used to feeling comfortable with outliners. The idea that a "simple" bullet can contain bullets packed with new information ad infinitum is revolutionary to me. I'm still getting to grips with Tana, but comparing Logseq and Roam, I don't see why I should pay $15 a month for what another app offers for free. Also, Logseq has flashcards, something that's become a necessity for me.
you can join the mem 2.0 alpha and make a video about it. looks promising, but pretty early yet.
I have signed up. Hopefully I will be able to check it out soon
Very nice to see Kylo Ren help us organize ourselves. Didn't expect him to be so kind.
😂😂😂
Best ever
Really good!
Great video again, thank you. Looks like a good app vut the flaws (and the price) make it a definite NO for me. Shame, because irs got so much potential. Daniel, if you get time and feel like it, try out Zettel Notes... Its a Zettelkasten kind of system but uses Markdown and is really really good. 👍🙏
It's a very nice app. Cool tip. I wish I could afford the subscription tho
Thank you! Me too 😂
Pros: It has some interesting features. It has a pretty UI, and the app is smooth and feels nice. Cons: The list of links is too large! You should try Linkman Pro it's absolutly beast.
Okay, this was both useful and interesting. 👏Buuut I'd love to see a video about Collabwriting. I don't understand why more people aren't talking about this tool??! 😭 I use it for my everyday research. I'd even say that Collabwriting is an alternative to Evernote Web Clipper.
why dont i see the boards like you have on mine. i am missing the ones that is shown.
Do you have the ability to add them? Like pressing the add button?
I apologize. I do see them and have the ability to add them. I was looking under featured and chose all thinking that's all there is.
@ no worries at all!
Most underrated is Noto - Elegant Note.
Was my FAVORITE app.... but then the little niggles began to show up.... the one that moved me away was this... you hit on it.... sort of.... Simple take a bullet list and try to turn it back to normal text. You can't! I first found out when I copied and pasted a bulleted list into a card, and I couldn't change it to normal text. Bye Bye... And what a shame... I love this concept and want to use it but...
I had some of the same issues yesterday! I can’t copy and paste text. It pastes the block ins randomly. It is so annoying but I still have a dream of the new ceo fixing the app but I’m not sure that he will
