Rock Cairn Cancer Memorial
Yesterday we completed this memorial cairn for cancer victims and their families.
Survivors will be able to write the name of their departed loved one upon a river rock and place it unto the cairn. I hope it can provide them some comfort. And strength. Commissioned by EMD Serono and installed at their location at Boston Seaport.
In the words of EMD “We are looking for someone to help us build a "rock cairn" in the office representing our journey and commitment to stay true to our purpose for patients living with cancer, multiple sclerosis and other serious diseases.”
I am deeply honored that they chose my work to serve this purpose.

I search the earth....I keep my eyes peeled looking for the perfect stones, of course. I find them in the wild. I source them from my customer's properties. If something lives under that stone leave it alone. If ants live there turn the stone over, they'll evacuate with admirable efficiency. I find them in quarries and excavation sites. They're everywhere it seems. Each stone has a way that it ...

I purchased this book a year or two after starting my own business, when I was figuring out what I wanted to do...I'd never known any artist stone masons in person so it was cool to find someone on a similar path. I never sought to copy his designs.....or methods.....and my approach is different from his but I admire his work and his writing style. Great book by a fine craftsman and artist. Thank you

    How much in consumable blades do you need for one of those? Are the ones you were working on limestone or granite?

    • @DevineEscapes
      @DevineEscapes 2 месяца назад

      You mean the stone that I was striking with hammer and chisel--that was Pennsylvania Bluestone, a type of sandstone. IDK, I don't go through too many blades, other guys say they buy blades every week. I always cut wet and also use the chisels a lot.

  • @MrTonyaug

    Good stuff Devin.. in New Jersey having trouble finding 1/8” or 3/8”screenings to use for leveling and joints. Most local places have concrete sand. Is this okay to use for leveling and joints?

    • @DevineEscapes
      @DevineEscapes 2 месяца назад

      The problem is that ants love sand. They tend to build their colonies in it and end up undermining the flagstones. Also, if the joints are sand the sand will wash away easier, whereas screenings tend to stay in place better. You must be going to the wrong places--try masonry supply places, not landscape supply places. Quarries will have it too--any quarry that makes gravel, makes screenings, though they may call it grit, stone dust, quarry dust, pathway fines, etc etc.

    Very cool! Every single stone that is loose.. not just a few, but every single one.. was created by the ancient people. There’s a complicated multifaceted style of art that goes unrecognized until we study for several weeks. People from all over the country are discovering ceremonial sites (often during construction) and learning how to see the stone art of our ancestors. Hope you get a minute to check it out.

    All the old timers used stone dust where I’m from. The new method with chip gravel doesn’t make as much sense to me, it seems like it would slide around too much, especially with the irregular bottoms of natural cleft stone. I’m curious what are your reasons for not liking chip stone with normal 1.5” natural cleft stone?

    • @DevineEscapes
      @DevineEscapes 6 месяцев назад

      The gravel they used for the foundation was 1.5" clean gravel--I never said anything about 1.5" natural cleft. But I don't like chip stone at all-- I use stone dust for the bedding and joint material.

      My work from when Devine Escapes started 17 years ago--still looks good. Grade level cement in a northern climate is one of the things I never do. But if you are using clean gravel as your foundation--then mortar makes more sense than using chip gravel.
