Rock Cairn Cancer Memorial
Yesterday we completed this memorial cairn for cancer victims and their families.
Survivors will be able to write the name of their departed loved one upon a river rock and place it unto the cairn. I hope it can provide them some comfort. And strength. Commissioned by EMD Serono and installed at their location at Boston Seaport.
In the words of EMD “We are looking for someone to help us build a "rock cairn" in the office representing our journey and commitment to stay true to our purpose for patients living with cancer, multiple sclerosis and other serious diseases.”
I am deeply honored that they chose my work to serve this purpose.

I search the earth....I keep my eyes peeled looking for the perfect stones, of course. I find them in the wild. I source them from my customer's properties. If something lives under that stone leave it alone. If ants live there turn the stone over, they'll evacuate with admirable efficiency. I find them in quarries and excavation sites. They're everywhere it seems. Each stone has a way that it ...

Great idea never tried that that’ll be helpful next time 😃
The ology
I believe in all those ologies--and I believe in swordfish!
@DevineEscapes well now I have a Jackson. Thanks to your video, I'm now a proud member of the wheelbarrowologists. Keep keeping the clean work going, bro.
@@frankiefrank4853 Awesome, welcome to the fold.

bats like stairs
your work is verra inspiring. What books do you love? I have seen the Chinese walls in FarNorCal. Parks tried to copy unsuccessfully.
@Mypink11 In the company of stone by Dan Snow. I purchased this book a year or two after starting my own business, when I was figuring out what I wanted to do...I'd never known any artist stone masons in person so it was cool to find someone on a similar path. I never sought to copy his designs.....or methods.....and my approach is different from his but I admire his work and his writing style. Great book by a fine craftsman and artist. Thank you
@@DevineEscapes Thank you. I'm trying to convince my partner to do a stone foundation.
that birdbath is lovely. All of it is lovely, those benches. you are.
Thank you so much :) I love me some stone
This is the first work I’ve come across that inspires in the way Andrew Goldsworthy’s work does. Just gorgeous.
Just stunning!
Thank you
How much in consumable blades do you need for one of those? Are the ones you were working on limestone or granite?
You mean the stone that I was striking with hammer and chisel--that was Pennsylvania Bluestone, a type of sandstone. IDK, I don't go through too many blades, other guys say they buy blades every week. I always cut wet and also use the chisels a lot.
Good stuff Devin.. in New Jersey having trouble finding 1/8” or 3/8”screenings to use for leveling and joints. Most local places have concrete sand. Is this okay to use for leveling and joints?
The problem is that ants love sand. They tend to build their colonies in it and end up undermining the flagstones. Also, if the joints are sand the sand will wash away easier, whereas screenings tend to stay in place better. You must be going to the wrong places--try masonry supply places, not landscape supply places. Quarries will have it too--any quarry that makes gravel, makes screenings, though they may call it grit, stone dust, quarry dust, pathway fines, etc etc.
very cool
I love what I do. Thank you
Wonderful ❤
Thank you :)
Such nice work! It's beautiful! Sid walkways and a patio are similar in the way of putting small flat river rock in between a peachy orange rose colored sandstone. The spiral is something I'd like to do.
Thank you
I DEF gotta build me one of these
❤❤❤❤
👍
Very cool! Every single stone that is loose.. not just a few, but every single one.. was created by the ancient people. There’s a complicated multifaceted style of art that goes unrecognized until we study for several weeks. People from all over the country are discovering ceremonial sites (often during construction) and learning how to see the stone art of our ancestors. Hope you get a minute to check it out.
Okay, but check what out? what do I search for then?
Fantastic from the Uk
Thank you
❤❤❤
How did you get the stairs there in the first place?
I used a modified gantry crane/engine hoist. There's a photo, second from the last photo on this page: www.devineescapes.com/how-to-move-large-stones-without-heavy-equipment/
Why are you destroying the stone ? Selfish
Shaping, not destroying. For fun, and for profit is why.
Hi, Wow. It is mesmerising watching this develope and come together, and shot beautifully. Tfs ⚒💚
Thank you
Another incredible display of "Fing Hard Work!"
Hey, thank you.
How much do those cost ?!
@@jlcr-j2w Each one is different. I have bird baths from 400 to 3000. Get in touch via my website if you're interested in purchasing.
Lovely! I made a walkway tolarge sitting area followed by walkway. The stone was a Sandstone With limestone in pink, orange magenta and yellow tones mixed. It was a stunning stone! I put lakestones of all sizes and colors between rocks, then did a poly sand. Turned out wonderful! #WobbleFree means happy!
Oh thank Q thank Q thank Q for the tip!
Thank you.
@DevineEscapes here is somethings I've recently done. I love rock..... one lady called me, "One who speaks to rocs" 😉

Quick, somebody call Graham Hancock or Giorgio Tsoukalos. They'll lose their minds...lol
I hope someone calls Graham Hancock, or Randall Carlson. Thank you
The fact that they had chambers is slept on
Woah this is incredible! I cant imagine how much time it takes to become this skilled at your craft.
Excellent job ! What is the weight and brand of your bell hammer ?
Thank you. I believe it's 3 pounds--might be 4. Trow and holden, out of Vermont. Same folks who make the handset chisel and point chisel.
Looks it was hard. I can only imagine the difficulty of the real pyramids.
It's a simple matter of acoustic technology. Just say AHohmmMMMM, getting the MMMMM all buzzy up in your nasal cavity, causing third eye vibration, whilst visualizing the stone lifting.
Thanks!!
Incredible artistry. Few will understand the amount of time and dedication you have devoted to your craft
Wow
Thank you
Yeah, man! New subscriber
Awesome, thank you for joining us.
How do you weather proof it against erosion and what not
Impressive collection!
And more to come, soon enough. Thank you
You truly are set apart from the rest.. you can see the love in every stone art piece you have done
That's awesome of you to say that, thank you
All the old timers used stone dust where I’m from. The new method with chip gravel doesn’t make as much sense to me, it seems like it would slide around too much, especially with the irregular bottoms of natural cleft stone. I’m curious what are your reasons for not liking chip stone with normal 1.5” natural cleft stone?
The gravel they used for the foundation was 1.5" clean gravel--I never said anything about 1.5" natural cleft. But I don't like chip stone at all-- I use stone dust for the bedding and joint material.
Same here man. I like the vids, keep em coming
Personally I put 2B tamped and wet lay it I like your method too I just like to wet lay everything
My work from when Devine Escapes started 17 years ago--still looks good. Grade level cement in a northern climate is one of the things I never do. But if you are using clean gravel as your foundation--then mortar makes more sense than using chip gravel.
