Ocean Underwater Exploration History and Future
We don't see the ocean when we look at the water that covers more than 70% of our planet. We only see the entrance to it. A campfire reading from the book The Frontier Below, which takes us on a journey from the past into the future.

Who was the arrogant Canadian representing AquaLung that supposedly said to Ted Eldred "you either sell to us or we'll run you out?" Is Ted's Porpoise regulator the 1st single hose regulator?

Couple other issues: One is all the Diesel (?) oil held onboard the ship for the long journey has been bubbling up for decades as the old tanks corrode. If they completely fail, that is an environmental disaster at the mouth of the Whangarei Harbour. Second is that, the NZ Government of the day used the gun register to collect up all the military-type rifles, (.303's for instance), held privately. Presumably to arm the British Home Guard that only had pitch forks to face an German invasion at that time. Witnesses at the Port of Auckland said these were all greased and packed in wooden crates onboard the Niagara and all went to the bottom of the sea, leaving our Home Guard with nothing but pitch forks to face a Japanese invasion. The Americans sent bulk firearms for the Home Guards of the UK and the NZ some time later. Churchill said it was the second most important shipment of the war after the Canadian divisions. Third is that, it was one heck of a coincidence that the Germans laid mines just days before the Niagara with all that gold left port. There has been a lot of speculation about someone in the NZ Parliament tipping them off. Some strongly socialist types didn't believe NZ should enter a European war. All that changed when Germany invaded Russia and they got off their Wellington soapboxes and even encouraged people to enlist.

When the siren/s went off in Whangarei, shocked locals thought the Japanese had invaded. News reached that the Niagara was in trouble and 3 privately owned boats left the Town Basin immediately and at full speed. Somewhat late was the fourth boat, owned by "Cap' Wilkinson", (he always wore a Captain's hat and often a silk apron for his work as a saddler). He'd sent home to his native Germany for plans for a boat and an appropriate motor. It was so well designed and balanced that one by one it passed the others in the race to pick up survivors, and arrived at the scene first. The irony of who he was, was not missed. My Grandfather Albie Wallace the next day was asked by "Cap" to tighten the engine bolts back down. It had all but vibrated loose and would not have got much further. When the first gold was recovered it was later taken to nearby Onerahi School (probably to here) on a trolley to show the kids including my mother. They were invited by the salvage Captain to help themselves to one of the bars. Of course, it was so heavy they couldn't lift it.

In grade school Jaques Cousteau was my hero. Most of my peers watched football, base ball or basketball. Nope i wanted to learn what was happening on the RV Calypso. And because of my fascination with mister Cousteau on my eighth grade gradation my father asked what i wanted for a present. I said i wanted to learn to scuba drive like Jaques Cousteau. So we all got to learn how. It became a family thing. Thank you mister Cousteau.

Born in 1938, I was fortunate to have a Godfather who took his role seriously. An army Major, served in North Africa, he was a man of action and adventure. His birthday & Xmas gifts were books about discovery and adventure, one of those books was by Jacques Cousteau and underwater adventure, Edmund Hilary & Mt Everest was another. In 1968 I left the UK for a prime job opportunity in Hobart, Tasmania Australia. The new Clinical School was opposite a scuba diving centre!. It was not long before I had a wetsuit, new SeaBee regulator and a dive tank with a J reserve handle. Over the years many a time I have sucked the tank dry, coming home with enough Cary’s and abalone to feed us all week. At 85, I am forever indebted to my uncle & JC, for giving me the interest & equipment to achieve what my uncle had sown in a youngster’s mind. Greetings from Tasmania Australia.👍😁🇦🇺🦘

Back in the 60s my father was a plumber/ boilermaker in Sydney Australia. He was an avid spear fisherman in his spare time as well. Hearing about the newfangled diving apparatus he got hold of some plans for a regulator of the design Cousteau had invented and set about making it out of sheet brass etc. Apparently he sold the rig in the 60s but kept the plans, he passed them on to me before he passed away recently.

I’ve been a recreational diver since 1967 when I took lessons at the YMCA at 11 years old. I’m now 67 years old and still diving, although not as much, and not as deep, but over my lifetime I was able to do most everything one can do in recreational diving including instructing and stage decompression diving. Double hose regs were still in use when I first took classes in ‘67, but I never used one. The class had both but they gave me the single hose reg, and I never used the double hose for the rest of my life, since they went out of use by the time I was diving frequently. The first reg I purchased was the U.S Divers (Aqualung) Calypso which I still have hanging in my garage. I’m basically familiar with regulators having worked in a dive shop helping to rebuild them as part of my Dive Master training, but I never knew that the double hose was due to pressure differential. I always assumed it was just an exhaust, which always made better sense to me than modern single hose regs which exhaust in your face. This was a fascinating video and you have my subscription. Blessings!
