The athletes back in these days played for the LOVE of their sport. Not for giant, big contracts. Keep in mind, these players agent gets a percentage of the deal they can close. Here's the thing about the LeBron GOAT debate: First - you never can call yourself the GOAT. On the court, talking trash or whatever is one thing, but making a public statement automatically takes you off the list for me. Second - Lebron lacks the drive of the greats - Kobe, MJ, Bird - those guys would practice non-stop and leave their blood on the boards for a win. I don't see that in LeBron - he's going for long term numbers (which people pathetically use to "prove his greatness - most points ever BS" - playing soft so you can play for 20+ doesn't equal greatness). Third - If you are not a leader for your team - you are not a GOAT. And a leader does not *EVER* walk away from his team to pout. You can't act like a child and be the GOAT at the same time. Finally, and probably most importantly, modern players have taken everything the guys like Bird did and built upon it. Bird gave LeBron the foundation, and LeBron added to it. Does that make him better? Because the greats before him taught him how they did the unbelievable things no one had seen or thought of before and medical advancements have allowed him to continue long after others of the past would have had to stop? If LeBron came first, and Bird used LeBron's move set and expanded on it - would that make Bird better than LeBron? That's the big thing everyone misses - every modern player in every sport has the benefit of being able to build on what those before him/her did. So, saying LeBron is a better player - well yeah - he learned from the best - Larry! But you have to take it in context of the time they were playing. Larry's dagger three, founding the 50/40/90 club (LeBron ever get in that exclusive club - even once? I think he needed some practice on that foul line to be called the GOAT), his fade away jumper, his insane and innate (almost psychic) passing ability - no one had done it like Larry and that's why he's called Legend. What had LeBron invented that we had not seen in the game before? Flopping? And BTW - Bird never would have flopped - if you flopped back in the '80s and '90s - you would have gotten laughed out of the arena. No *MAN* is going to flop and act hurt because that would make you look weak to your opponent. Basketball back then was a war and there's no flopping in war! Bunch of prima donnas in the game today. One of the reasons why they discouraged shooting the three is because it was a low percentage shot back then. Playing in the post and shooting close to the hoop was was more likely to put numbers on the scoreboard. Also this is an important thing to note. Only recently if you are fouled on a three-point shot would you be rewarded with three free throws. Back then you only got two.. On that fact alone the three-point shot was a low percentage shot.

I don't watch or know much about any sport really. I'm a bit of a nerd. I'm fascinated by history, geography, philosophy, etc. so my academic knowledge is pretty expansive. Because those are academic subjects I often have people remark on how smart I am, and I always remind them that almost everyone has that level of knowledge about something. I'm always impressed by just how much sports data a lot of people keep in their heads. It's not viewed as an intellectual pursuit by most people, but as far as I can tell the amount of information they have stored on sports and the amount I have on history seem relatively similar. That something is a "smart people subject" is kind of a nonsense statement.
