A Season with the Loons: S3 Ep 1 Will this year be better? & the attitude shift I learned after 40.
I am back for third year with loons! In this episode I visit my loon pond to see if my same loon pairs have returned and nested in spring after a very difficult year for them last year at this location.
Drone shot notes: I shot the drone footage in April well before any loon nesting in an area it was legal to do so. Further I did not launch the drone until the loons where nowhere close (like 1/4 mile away) and there were no people on the pond at all at that time either. If loons are around, or nesting, I would urge you not to fly a drone and certainly never intentionally near them.

Visiting Largest Northern Gannet Colony in Canada. Best Wildlife Photography Adventure?
Просмотров 8273 месяца назад
In 2023, I visited what is possibly the largest nesting colony of Northern Gannets in the world off the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, Canada. My adventure took me through mountains, moose, and foggy rugged coastlines before hopping on a boat to reach the island that hosts the gannet colony. What is this bird like? Are they lovers… or fighters? Why are there so many, in one place, so clo...
70,000 Snow Geese Blast off, Middle Creek, Pennsylvania 2024, 120 fps ultra slow-motion Canon R7
Просмотров 3414 месяца назад
This late winter I got to witness the spectacle of the snow geese at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. According to rangers, there were about 70,000 geese present while I was there. You won't be able to see all of them in my footage, as I was working with telephoto lenses. The flock was huge. I hope you enjoy this taste of the experience! This was filmed at 120 fps on a Canon R7 with a Can...

This is the sequel to my previous video, which you can find here ruclips.net/video/mH9Bv1s4Khg/видео.html Record Rain. Nest Flooding. Rogue Loons. Would my loon chicks make it this year? This was a very different season, for me and the loons. I had healed very much and thought I would be in for another peaceful year observing the loons and their environment. I did have many peaceful moments of ...
Imagining the Extinct Passenger Pigeon by Observing Tree Swallow Flocks
Просмотров 41611 месяцев назад
This short video shares my thoughts as I observed the tree swallow flocks that number in the thousands during the August migration in New England. I have been fascinated with extinct species and the tree swallow flocks make me think about the passenger pigeon, which went extinct in 1915. Just 50 years before that, its population was in the billions. The exact cause of the extinction isn’t known...

The ”How to Find and Photograph Series” educates about species, environments, ethics, and photography tips to inspire you to more deeply connect with nature and improve your outdoor photography. In this episode, I present my Snowy Owl photography project to help you understand more about the snowy owl and how to use this information to ethically find and photograph this amazing species. I also ...
Great video. Informative and beautiful. Those snowy owls are truly majestic.
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment! I agree they are beautiful!
Great stuff! So calm out there! Great ending with the rainbow. Awesome storytelling ! Keep up the great work. I’m going to check out the others.
Thanks so much for checking it out Joe. I appreciate the support!
From what I know about loons, they do their iconic lengthy wail when they have lost track of another loons position and want to find them again. In contrast to that, the short hoots are basically just quick back-and-forth updates when changing position. It's unwise to ascribe human behaviour and motivation to animals, but it does feel like the loon at the end was engaging you. It gave you localisation hoots - basically "I'm over here, let me know where you are going". While that might sound sad, maybe a better interpretation would be: "Keep in touch" - and perhaps even "I'll miss you". Your video was beautiful and I am very thankful to have watched it. Truly touching.
This is an excellent comment and breakdown of the meaning of the loon calls, of which they have 4. You are right about the hoots, by far the most relaxed of them all. Yes, for all of the time I spent with them, that loon at the end did seem to be engaging with me. So who know what it had in mind (again not that loons have the same kind of "mind" we have. Thanks again for watching and for such a thoughtful comment!
Extreme levels of cuteness.
I agree! I had to go back this year and photograph them again because of that.
As hokey as this sounds, it may have been your mom saying goodbye❤
Yeah it really was something with that chick swimming up to me with the sounds like that. I mean they were comfortable with me but usually they would just be interested in eating or preening and stuff like that. Mysterious to say the least.
Plover should have to pay money 4 the beach like the rest of us 😂 and stop stepping on there children with there little stick legs
lol! Yes and they get free parking too.
I love that loon call. It has to be one of the most incredible animal sounds. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks Brian, I agree about the loon calls. They actually have a few different ones that mean different things. I appreciate you checking out the video!
Wonderful video. Great footage, information, and conservation messaging!
Thanks for watching and the feedback, I appreciate it! Those were the goals!
John glad you’re back! Being out in Nature sure helps balance a life. You’ve been a blessing to us all.
Thank you Tim. Yes, that is a great point. Spending time in nature has always been a constant way to provide balance in all the phases of my life.
❤❤❤❤
its hard to listen to you catering to the haters..... either you shoot wildlife or you explain and justify yourself to the Karens of the world
Thanks for the feedback Jeff. Interesting to hear that's how some of the segments came across. In my head the purpose of those parts is to address a wide audience, many of whom may not be familiar with the practice of wildlife photography and give a sense of the etiquette and in my state, the law (there are fines and imprisonment for 'loon harassment'), regarding approaching loons. I have witnessed some people with cell phones paddle right up to loons with chicks and freak them out, so I guess that is more what I had in mind rather than online haters. I am shooting at 800mm effective focal length, and sometimes cropping, so I just didn't want to give the expectation that you can get so close as to fill the frame on a cell phone. But thank you again for the constructive feedback.
Awesome so lovely video. Nature scenery is amazing & thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Sandip! It is pretty out there
My mother was older when she had me - and I'm no longer so young myself - yet I am still fascinated, and sad, about how she used to speak of flocks of birds flying over their farm which darkened the sky. The speed of these types of declines is scary.
Wow, thanks for sharing that anecdote. Yes, we aren't so far removed from those times. Nor immune from future instances.
Cool, lots of good information! We had fun watching a pair in fog a week or two ago. I should suggest your channel to my husband, he loves loons!
That's great you got to see some loons. The fog is one of my favorite conditions for them. Please suggest away!
Beautiful! Thank you.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and your support!
Loons of course, travel to many water bodies local to them and cheat on each other with other loons all of the time.
😊 Thank you!
I really enjoyed your narrative and reflections on life. Fantastic footage! :)
Thanks for checking it out and leaving such kind feedback! Appreciate it!
Great vlog, John! Awesome start to the season and glad to hear the loon pairs are well. Good points about loon ethics, I once unknowingly was staked out at a sight a loon was building their nest at. My first thought was oh great this is epic! But then realized I was unwanted and paddled the heck out of dodge. Looking forward to the upcoming vlogs!
Thanks Liam! And glad you shared that anecdote, even still sometimes I come across some situation in wildlife photography and get excited but then have to check that and think things through from the animals perspective. I will check out your new wildlife video, glad you had time to make one amid the home remodel. With 3 kids myself, the most home improvement I can muster right now is clearing a path on the floor so no one trips!
@@johnwelchphotographyI could only imagine trying to do it all with kids! That’ll come soon enough but for now the home reno is already cutting down my wildlife time! All good problems to have. I’m headed up to Acadia (Schoodic side) for a few days during the 4th, seeing your vlog has got me thinking of targeting loons at Jones Pond. Good luck, talk soon!
Great video! I love the calm in nature 😊
Thank you for watching and leaving that kind comment!
Seeing someone who genuinely loves what they are doing is so refreshing. Great episode John, Looking forward to the next
Thanks Chris, I do appreciate that complement. After more than 20 years of exploring the wild in different capacities, I still am enthralled and love how way leads upon way out here. Glad that came across in the video.
My twins just started college ❤
Wow, empty nester now? That is hard for me to contemplate.
Great episode! I’m totally taking notes to help me with my episodes😂. I’m not sure people realize the work that goes into something of this quality.
Thanks Bill! Yes, as you know, it takes way more time than people would think. I am still learning as I go. I guess I try to think about story when I make my videos, even though I don't really know the story when I am out in the wild.
Wonderful work!!
Thank you very much, appreciate the compliment!
Really looking forward to your videos this year!
Thank you Diane! I am happy to be out there making them.
John, I enjoyed this, very well done.
Thanks Peanut! I appreciate the compliment!
YAY!! WELCOME BACK! WE ARE SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU AND THE LOONS 😊!
Thank you Sue! I appreciate it and definitely hope things are better for the loons this year!
Oh, BTW, I read somewhere that LOONS DO RECOGNIZE US As long as you are near Multiple Times in the Season! AMAZING BIRDS👍
I am so happy to see an upload from you!! I love the loons! Watching now 😊
Thanks so much, I appreciate the support! Hope you have had some good recent travels!
Amazing so lovely video. Thanks for sharing and lovely presented.
Thank you so much Sandip!
I watched your first one. So wonderful! To find this, I subscribed! Thank you for your love of the precious Loons.
Thanks for watching, subscribing, and for your kind feedback! I appreciate the support! I am back out with the loons again this season and putting together more!
I lost my mom on May 14th as well.. I was blessed with a very loving and forgiving mother. It was difficult to see her in pain after her diagnoses. The last day we spoke was Mother's Day Thank you for being so wonderful mom.. I love you with all my heart ❤️ I'll see you there ✝️
I am very sorry to hear that you have lost your mother too. I had to watch my mother suffer too, so I can relate. I will pray for you both.
Hello, a very nice documentation and detailed story of these Loons and wonderful to see!!! I will take your advice and the end of the movie.... Greetings Gijs
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a kind, thoughtful comment. I have to remind myself of the hard-earned lessons at the end from time to time still!
I just found your channel and videos. I'm so sorry about the loss of your mom. Keep doing what you're doing in her memory. Your videos are a beautiful showcase of all life.
Thank you sincerely for the condolences. Yes, I have a great reverence for life and wish to share that.
They actually go past Nova Scotia. We have them here, in Newfoundland along our shores. My brother in-law actually works with a group for the birds conservation.
Oh wow, that cool that they make it that far north. Glad you shared that!
Your look on life is inspiring and your photos are amazing thank you for your love of loons and nature
Thanks I try to share that! Nature has given me a great space to reflect on life.
Great video, stunning footage and images. Love the shots of the birds fencing.
Thanks Richard! Appreciate you checking it out and the kind feedback! The fencing shots were what I was initially looking for but I loved observing all facets of their lives at the colony.
Another fascinating video (and great photos!) Always amazing to see the strong maternal instincts of birds and other mammals….and John, nice ending
Thanks Fred! Yes, the parental instinct across species is interesting and thanks for watching until the end. I try to reflect on my experiences in nature and tie them to the rest of life, which aren't as separate as we might think.
Another fascinating video (and great photos!) Always amazing to see the strong maternal instincts of birds and other mammals.
Nice video, great photos. I recently saw a juvenile Common Loon in the surf off Monterey, California. This surprised me because I always assumed that common loons were a bird of the Northeast United States. Now I realize they’re fairly common up and down coastal California
Thanks for checking it out! Yes, both common loons and pacific loons spend winters, and into early spring off the California coast I believe and then I know they breed in Oregon, Washington, and Canada. The ones you see that far south off the coast are probably in the more drab looking winter plumage right? Beautiful country out that way!
Wow! We got to experience this in Tule Lake and it was truly incredible (and loud!) to see so many geese in one place! New subscriber here ✨
Thanks for checking it out and subscribing! Yes, the noise is impressive and you really need to be there in person to appreciate the size and scale of a huge flock taking off, circling, and landing.
Piping plovers are my favorite bird and probably animal overall and I'd love to work in their conservation efforts one day.... Amazing video, thank you!! Plovers are just perfect!!!! :^D
Thanks for watching. That's awesome that you share the same love for the plovers!
How incredibly beautiful!
These birds are absolutely beautiful. Lovely social structures
Thank you so much for checking it out! I agree with you!
My favorite animal😊😊😊
Definitely top of my list too!
Good Morning, John! Thinking of you and yours on MOTHER'S DAY, As we CELEBRATE our MOM'S. WHAT A GIFT! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Sue, that is very kind of you to think of me on this day! Much appreciated. Sorry I missed this until now. Yes we can always celebrate the gift of our mothers.
Adorable!! 🥰😍🫶🏽
Great video! Awesome shots and super educational!
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it!
❤❤❤ Beautiful documentary, thank you much!
Thank Lori for watching and leaving your kind comment.
A lot of good information here! I camped two nights last September on Assateague Island and had a blast photographing the Piping Plovers and other birds. They were very interesting to watch. I am very glad to hear their numbers are on the rise and hopefully will remain that way!
Thanks for checking it out and sharing your experience with them. Assateague has been on my list of places to check out someday. Yes, hopefully the cute little plovers will keep increasing!
Beautiful bird and babies ! Ty , I've never seen one before.
Definitely cool to see in person, tiny though! There are other member of the plover family that have similarly cute chicks across the coastal areas of the US.
