Giving you the tools to build your career.
I've been an adjuster for 25 years and worked in almost every area of claims. I have watched new adjusters fail because they were not ready for that first assignment. The purpose of this channel is to help adjusters who want to make this their career. Getting started takes patience, knowledge and practice. I want you to succeed. You can do this.

Adjusters Are The Worst
In this video I talk about working on the "dark side" as a roofing contractor. The way some adjusters treat roofing contractors is a problem. If you want to be a great adjuster, then you need to treat others with respect.

Excellent points.
Let’s see what the PA says 😂
We already know! 😂😂
Awesome content as always my friend!
Appreciate the support!
Man i wish i would have seen this before deployment. I had planned on staying in the claims area for three weeks to do 18 post hurricane claims but then a hurricane came again two weeks later and the area was evacuated 4 days after i got to the hotel and then i got hit w the hurricane at home and lost power for 3 days. Worried our lack of training and the set backs will get us the boot after looking forward to the opportunity to help people and follow storms 🤦♂️ ill keep you posted in two weeks if i have new claims assigned and overcame the learning curve and other setbacks. Very exciting career indeed. I will use your method moving forward if given the opportunity.
That’s a bad break. I hate that for you. It’s tough to plan for those types of set backs. Keep your head up and do what you can with this deployment, learn from it and come back better next storm!
This is so helpful because everyone at this moment is getting deployed and I am about to deploy. However, everyone is so focused on the money and personally I’m focused on the learning opportunity. Udon the storm for the training so I know what I’m doing. The money will come, so long as I know what I’m doing I believe. So it’s just great to hear someone else focused on it as well. Great video 🎉 and I look forward to taking the roofing class in the future.
@JJohns1980, I love the fact your focused on learning instead of money, this first deployment. That right there tells me you will be a great adjuster. I’m deploying to FL hopefully our paths will cross. . Some advice for your first deployment, the stress is real, at some point you will want to quit……..DO NOT QUIT! You can’t do this job alone, rely on your resources. (trainers, managers, adjuster friends etc.)
@@pattersonadjustertraining Thank you for the advice. That means so much to me. Many blessings to you as well. Safe travels and hopefully we connect, FL is on the table for me as well. 🍀

You are not using the pitch gauge correctly.
Hey thanks for the comment! You are technically correct, you should place it on a flat surface (usually a clipboard) that’s laying on the field shingles. Placing the pitch gauge flat against a single shingle surface vs flat on a clip board makes almost no difference in the pitch readings. However if shingles are cupped or curled then you wouldn’t want to place the gauge directly against the shingle. Also wouldn’t want to straddle two shingles as this would give incorrect.
@@pattersonadjustertraining You put the top of it on the upper shingles bottom edge to replicate the angle the stacked shingles have.
Ah yeah you’re right just noticed that good eye!😂
I'm not sure how old Andy is, but I'm sure his knees are 18!!!
That’s hilarious………..I wish they were!!!

Great detail and info. Thanks Andy
You’re welcome Tim!
Use a wheel for exteriors
Wait how did you get the roof measurements before going on roof? You had a diagram. Do you really think an aerial street view gives you the measurements neeeded
I ordered an Eagleview before the inspection. I use street views but only to see what the property/house looks like.
@@pattersonadjustertraining ah okay I’ll have to figure out how to get those ordered then as a new adjuster
Usually the larger carriers will pay for the Eagleview (EV) or Hover Report(s). EVs are ordered from the Claim List view in Xactimate. 95% of the time they take less than 24 hrs to come in. If there are multiple large scale Cats going on, may take 1-3 days.
@@pattersonadjustertraining great thank you so much for the insight
Great content Andy!!! Charles definitely have the right mindset to be very successful!!!
Totally agree!
How can I work with you Andy I going to get my IA licence on July 14,2024
Most IA firms will have their own trainer(s) you will be working with. Send me an email with what you specifically need help with or what you had in mind. Email: andy@pattersonadjustertraining.com
How do you access a step hip roof? If there is no ridge to hook on?
Those are challenge. Your options are limited to the Hipplock or ladder scoping.
Yes, do not give up!!!
Excellent examples. I think the engineers at HAAG say something like, if the wind is strong enough to break a seal strip, it's going to rip the shingle off or at least leave a crease.
ruclips.net/video/KLRqFMwia5A/видео.html "So much of this journey is about getting comfortable being uncomfortable." So true. For example, the first time I pulled up to a house with a "Red Tag" sticker on the front door that said, "UNSAFE DO NOT ENTER," I thought, "Uh, oh. What now?"
That is a good experiment but with my Lasar I would be done in about 64 sec
I was wondering the same thing, how long would it take him with a laser?
@@patmcm6119 that’s how I do it for the last 12 years. I could do that elevation in less than a min

I love the part where Daniel says he had a “new level of motivation” 😂
How can you close claims on site and write the check without the claim going through review?? Every storm I’ve been on, I have to submit my report to the carrier for review, only once it passes review is a check issued through the mail
Great question, it only works if you have authority to settle. There are some seasoned adjusters that have higher authority levels, than someone just starting out so they could settle onsite. If you have to send to the carrier to review. I would still explain the settlement process to the customer I detail where the only thing left to do, is call them with the dollar amount (once your estimate has been reviewed/approved) Thanks for the question!
@@pattersonadjustertraining It would be nice being able to leave the policy holders house with the file being completed, but I don’t think I would want that kind of authority to be able to write the check. I’ve been an IA for about a year and some change and I like my system of scoping and the writing once I get back to the hotel/ airbnb. I also have my “catch up” days where I just wrote and don’t scope. Sometimes it can be a lot sitting in that chair writing 6+ files, but I hate using Xactimate mobile. Any advice on how I can make things a little easier on myself?
The second and third adjuster said, "I'm not getting paid enough by the firm or carrier to drive out to the property, reinspect, fix the first adjusters sketch, re-right the GLR, take photos and go through whatever nonsensical gymnastics the carrier requires to return a file, after all the money has already been taken from the claim!" "Oh... and by the way, we don't pay mileage anymore and we'll take 40% of your fee. Beginning in 2024, carriers are asking for more things on an inspection but not increasing the fee bill. I've experienced this first hand. You end up sketching 10 complicated rooms for an investment group owned rental home and only get to right for a ceiling spot in one room... absolutely not worth it anymore. New adjuster's beware.... this industry is not what it use to be. Btw, Andy, your a good guy and I love your content!
Thanks for the comment and the insight! Working clean-up is not as good as it used to be.
Pretty wild stuff. Hard to imagine. This is a really good one, Andy.
Falls under the “Sad But True” category!
Are the main eave and the ridge the same thing? As I was watching, that seemed to be...
The eave is the roof edge. I know some homes don’t have gutters so the an eave would be where the rainwater runs off the roof. The ridge is where slopes meet. You can have several ridges, but usually the ridge are the highest point on a roof. Thanks for the question!
Thank you, Andy.
You’re welcome!

Damage (as it pertains to property claims): Physical harm caused to something in such a way as to impair it's usefulness or value. The question boils down to did a covered peril cause the granule loss and is the granule loss sufficient to impair the shingles usefulness or value
Great comment! Those two questions cause more issues than pretty much anything else (when dealing with hail) Is the absence of granules damage? If so what caused the loss of granules? Is this a cause of loss covered under the policy. Once AI starts doing roof inspections us adjusters and roofers will finally get along😂
@@pattersonadjustertraining It's making it worse! Couple the AI with the carriers replacing experienced adjusters with brand new ones reading from script trees and it's only going to serve to make the lawyers more money, but hey, lawyers got to eat too lol One thing I've had a hard time getting people to understand is that granule loss alone does not mean hail caused the granule loss If there is any other evidence of hail (radar reports, spotter reports, pictures/videos, witness statements, or collateral damage) and circular-ish areas of granule loss that coincide with the date of loss then you can surmise that more likely than not, hail caused the granule loss Is the granule loss "damage" would be the next question and one that seems to get the most pushback
@@bluefalcon1674 yeah that’s the question that has to be answered. There are people on both sides (adjusters and roofing sales people) who have no idea what they’re talking about and won’t put any effort in learning and researching hail damage to shingles. That creates a lot of issues.
Absolutely amazing demonstration!!! Thank you!
You are so welcome!

2nd week? The stress and anxiety does get better 😂
@pattersonadjustertraining Good to know haha!
This is a great tip for new adjusters like myself!
Hi Andy. If you had to choose Xact8 Mobile vs Hover for measuring, what would you choose and why?
Thanks for the question! I’m familiar and used both. XM8 Mobile for interiors and Hover for exterior. XM8 mobile has a learning curve and can be off a few inches depending on the way you use it and whether you’re using Disto or LiDAR. For exterior measurements I like Hover. Although I have not used Hover for interiors (yet) from what I’ve seen and read, I think Hover is the way to go. They can provide accurate measurements and diagrams by using photos taken by the customer using their app. Much simpler to send them the photos to them so they can provide the measurements for you. It always comes down to cost though. At this point XM8 mobile may be the slightly cheaper option in the long run. Thanks for the comment
Nice! Love how you’re very detail in your instruction and have a really good pace so I can follow easily. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!! And for commenting!
how about blown off shingle by heavy wind , all sealen was broken and shingle easily lift up . is that qualify for insurance coverage how looks like a shingle gamage that Insurance would pay for it ?
Really good question! Shingles/Tabs that are creased, partly or completely blown off would be covered. On a fairly frequent basis there are some groups of shingles that have fused together. At first glance there doesn’t appear to be any damage but if you pull them up (they normally lift up as a group) you can see the shingles have been torn from/through the nails. The wind blew, probably with a strong gust, blew them up but due to their weight didn’t have the energy needed to tear them back or off. During most wind storms the wind speeds do not remain constant there are short gusts which do a lot of the damage. If the only issue with a shingle or tab is they are not sealed down, then normally this is not considered accidental direct physical loss and not covered under the most policies. The tabs not sealed issue is quite often a point of contention between adjuster and contractor. This can vary depending on the policy, carrier or State. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for the information am brand new adjuster and trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as possible! I was blessed to get hired for a Carrier and just recently got adjusters license. Do you have any advice for a beginner am trying to learn Xactimate and the carrier has micros already built in am just still trying to figure out the most productive and efficient way if you have any direction that may be of help? Thank you!
Thanks for the comment, I’m glad the information is helpful! The best way to learn XM8 quickly is to take a class from a someone who has been an adjuster for at least several years. If that person is an Xactimate Certified Trainer (XCT) that would be the best. I was a staff adjuster (cat field) 25 yrs. I would hate for you to spend money unnecessarily so if you recently got hired as a staff person they will train you on XM8 and their way of doing things. I plan on doing an XM8 Level 1&2 class in the next month. BTW I’m an XCT 😁
Ok thanks I will continue to watch your videos as well
how do you know what needs to be done? how did you know that repair could be done by hand? i dont understand how a new person would pick up on this kind of stuff. also, di you post the video where you wrote up the estimate? great stuff, thank you for making these.
Great question! This is probably one of the most difficult skills for new adjusters to learn, especially if your weak on home construction. You can find training on scoping, damage and how to use Xactimate and/or Symbility but it's difficult to find training on how the damage needs to be repaired. One of the things I'm doing with Adjuster House is showing people how to identify damage, how to think through the repair process and what would be involved in the repairs. Learning this skill will cut down on unnecessary supplements. Another huge benefit is it will make you faster. Being able to walk into a room with damage and knowing what needs to be done within the first couple of minutes is a big time saver. Plus knowing what needs to be repaired and how it will be repaired will give you confidence when talking to customers and contractors. The best way to learn this is getting a job helping a contractor, the second best way is by coming to Adjuster House. :) . If you're interested I'm having a informational webinar with Q & A next week. This will give you a lot more information. I will be posting the webinar link with the video coming out in two days. . (I don't think I ever posted the video where I completed the estimate from the interior scoping video. I'll work on this)
@@pattersonadjustertraining thanks Andy! Im on the list!
Homeowner here... It appears to me that the term "wear, tear and deterioration" precludes the fact that there can be legitimate hail damage that occurs even though there is "wear, tear, and deterioration". It has become a catch-all for insurance to deny claims after hail storms.
Good point. All roofs wear out. Technically as soon as the shingles are installed they start the “wear, tear and deterioration” (WTD) process. However if there is legitimate hail damage to the roof/shingles the insurance company should be paying for that damage. (Based on most standard Homeowners policies) I have been on roofs that were WAY past their service life but had legitimate hail which is covered and I was able to total the roof. I don’t know all the specifics but If your roof has legitimate hail damage (regardless of the condition) and the insurance company denied based on WTD, then you need a different insurance company or a different adjuster, possibly both! Thanks for the comment!
I guarantee if you invent that hail finding machine you will be an instant billionaire
Absolutely. I wish I was that smart! 😁
You’re the reason why homeowners get denied 🤣
Me?! I love roofs that I can total!!😁
Andy , and myself, are both Independent Adjusters. We are NOT incentivized to deny claims. Nothing makes us happier to get on a roof and see a ton of hail. It's easier and faster to inspect a roof that has legitimate hail damage, than it does to try and find hail damage.
@@kenhansen9443 I know you independent guys actually do y’all’s job. Just educate someone instead of talking down on them. You never know who trained them.
@KamerenB thanks for mentioning that. I think adjusters (as a whole) need to do a better job of giving respect and being courteous to contractors. You all have a tough job, Lord knows I wouldn’t want to do it!😁
@@pattersonadjustertraining I agree totally . When I’m at an adjuster meeting I never aim to argue. All I want to do is help the adjuster help the homeowner.
I had a Roofer show up to a hail inspection of mine, and one of the first things he said was, "I'm new and have no idea what hail looks like", he then preceeded to mark all the areas of hail on the roof. Btw there was no hail on that roof lol.
Ugh!!!!
It never ends, I’ve said what you said in the beginning that they know it’s not hail, and they say yes it is. I wonder if they geniunely don’t know
I never does🤦♂️ The one thing I hear all the time when I don’t provide a cause for every little blemish on the roof is “well if you can’t tell me what it is then it has to be hail”….uh there is such a thing as cause and effect, hail leaves a unique “footprint”.
It's intentional to keep their sales reps in the dark about real hail damage. Some adjusters pay for stuff like that, so there's no incentive for them to train them, or get them HAAG certified. But oh well, keeps us busy...
@EddieLuck1 good point!
Cool video Andy. It's like you read my mind with this idea!
Cool, thanks
